ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — Several West Indies stars are likely to be overlooked for the Tri-Nation tournament in June with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) reiterating Thursday that only players who participated in the Regional Super50 earlier this month would be eligible for selection.
Left-handed opener Chris Gayle, all-rounders Andre Russell and Darren Sammy, along with batsman Lendl Simmons all missed the Regional Super50, which wrapped up last week, due to their commitments in the Australian Big Bash.
All four players were part of the West Indies campaign at last year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
WICB chief executive Michael Muirhead said only the “best available eligible players will be selected” for upcoming series.

Several West Indies stars are likely to be overlooked for the Tri-Nation tournament in June with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) reiterating Thursday that only players who participated in the Regional Super50 earlier this month would be eligible for selection.
The tournament represented commercial potential for the WICB.
There is a direct opportunity for corporate partners to align themselves with the WICB, he said.

Well it will be an opportunity for some players to make a name for themselves and hopefully get an international contract, for example Carlos B, Erin Lewis, Richards.

It is a "win win" for the board and players.
The players don't have to fight over the new one day fees and the board don't have to pick them.
Result West Indies one day ranking will remain unchanged.
Did Marlon Samuels play in any game in the Nagico.

This is a whole load of nonsense. So if one of our young guns get a county contract, which is more competitive, he should turn it down to play in a weaker competition?
These guys need to stop making up rules out of spite, hate, jealousy, envy etc etc.

I fully agree.
Makes sense to me.
The WICB needs to have those players play locally to make the league marketable.
So yep I guess.

I hope they read this and know that it's time to move on. No one, including them, should be holding Windies cricket hostage for their own personal gains.

What part of the statement in bold above is unclear to you?
Besides......even if it were they they were available for selection but were not selected, how could they possibly be selected for the West Indies team when they're deemed not good enough to be selected for their regional team?
In addition, when last have they played 50 over cricket? Wasn't that the official reason why Bravo and Pollard weren't selected for the West Indies ODI squad?

Marlon is a special case. None of the
professional teams offered him a contract.
Another point. Even if the Yardies wanted to use him out of sympathy, they were already out of the playoffs by the time the returnees from OZ were available. Not so for Bravo and Holder, etc, whose teams were part of the playoffs and finals.

As a West Indian, you must realized so.call rules
Sudden and Fanny will see this rule differently, depending on who they are representing, The WICB will see it, base on the player.

you shouldn't give the stars that don't play in the regional tournament contracts but you have to pick the best team based on ability, experience and performances in all leagues recognized as a high standard league across the world. The stand against picking your best players is only a stand a novice will take. Any of your young players that become world class or is pursued around the world will sooner or later go play where there is greater recognition, excitement and the purse is significantly larger. It is the board that is forcing the players to choose not to represent West Indies. Any of these players that recognize they can make $500.000 in US dollars without West Indies cricket will go get that money. I don't care who they are, what they say or even if they mean what they say right now.

how can you sell a line without its most visible and proven products. It is a dumb sports management decision and an even dumber
business decision. I bet you in their hearts the younger players with real ability are not truly supporting this decision.

The main point to note are:
If pour experienced players choose to play lucrative t20 leagues instead of playing in regional competition, who do you think will be the level of teh competition?
If the stars stay away, how will teh youngsters gain from their experience?
Aren't we watering down the quality and hence the quality of emerging players?
Most every other country has those rules for selection to their national side. I dunno why some peeps here are attacking the decision.
How did these stars get their exposure to become stars? Isn't it important to give back to the regional teams as well?

these star players improved dramatically from playing in these tournaments. (maybe except Narine who is an exception) I remember Pollard was not even on West Indies team when he was a regular in Mumbai's team. Dwayne Smith greatest improvement came when he played with Chennai Super Kings. The younger players will improve by the board picking the best team so they could interact with the best players that can represent the region. These experience players hold the other players to a higher level because they were held to a higher level in a club that demands a lot from them. Also they would have to push harder to make the West Indies team. When these young players get their opportunity to play in these tournaments they should be allowed to play. The commentators, everyone one of them was talking about how Emrit and Lewis improved from playing in the Bangladesh league. The WICB cannot win with this stance. It works in bigger countries with larger populations and greater finance but it wouldn't work here.

Play the stars... lose
Play the youngsters... lose
So anybody could play really.
Seriously, you have to be playing in your domestic tournament to be eligible for international selection. It's like that for almost all sports.

so we really saying that if a top tennis player qualify to play in the Australia open but his local country national tournament running the same time then he should miss the Australian open or he cannot represent his country in the Olympics.

What is the purpose of a NOC, it gives the player permission to play and the WICB is compensated by the league.
How can WICB give permission and then penalize the player. WICB has been poor when it come to HR issues, no skills in reaching compromise with players.

Just to contrast the ECB has, through Andrew Strauss, encouraged Chris Jordan and others to put their name down for IPL although contracted to counties.
Their reasoning is the experience in the overseas leagues is better than the county cricket and they are interested in that experience to improve England.
If they followed WICB they would ban players who went to IPL over their county and thus weaken England ....do you see the logic there?
To prevent our stars playing in the two nations IS ABSOLUTELY STUPID AND REFLECTS ON THE IDIOTS RUNNING CRICKET.
When the stars are away it gives a chance to people like Evin Lewis to play for red force....and they get money....it's a win win win but they too arrogant to see it.

That could be true, but is this the approach to change?
Even today none of the guys play in the FC or 50 Over cricket. So What are we getting by this approach? Apart from watering down the domestic cricket we are also watering down the WI International Team.

Huh?
If you're a top footballer you're expected to play in the qualifiers of major tournaments.
You more than likely wouldn't be picked for a major competition if you don't.
I agree that players shouldn't have to play in regional competitions to be selected.
However, the WICB sort to strengthen the standard of regional cricket by asking these players to make themselves available and by making their participation mandatory.
If they know this before hand what's the point in arguing for these players.
Clearly, they would rather support their own interest instead of WI.
It's their choice. They made the decision, someone else would play, simple.

Thanks for answering method, cause he does know that's how it goes. You never see a man play WC without playing qualifiers unless he was injured just before the start and they will relax the clause cause he's some superstar and bringing him/her will be the difference between winning and losing. And even that's not a surety. These teams would stick to the clause.
The players were aware of this cause I'm sure it was mentioned prior, and they choose to go play, nuff respect to them
But they can't walk in and out of WI cricket as they like.
They got their initial exposure via some WI cricket sanctioned event, and now they dont' wanna give back?

yes these football stars come back and play for their countries in qualifiers but they don't come back and play for clubs. The West Indies acts as these cricketers' countries. So they should be allowed to play for their country. The regional teams acts as their local club.
