HEADLINE: Drop Pollard for final ODI, urges legend Waqar

CaribbeanCricket.com Oct 4, 2016, 4:08:16 AM

SHARJAH—Legendary Pakistan fast bowler, Waqar Younis, believes Kieron Pollard is hurting West Indies team morale with his lackadaisical approach and should be axed for tomorrow’s final One-Day International against Pakistan.

Speaking in his role as a television analyst following the second ODI on Sunday, Waqar said big-hitting all-rounder “did not even try” as the Caribbean side slid to a 59-run defeat in pursuit of an imposing 338 for victory at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Pollard entered in the 38th over with West Indies on 194 for four and facing a required run rate of nearly 12 an over but displayed little aggressive intent.

“His approach and the way he played in this game and in any of the T20 games, you’re destroying the morale of the team,” said Waqar, the second highest wicket-taker in Pakistan Test history with 373 scalps from 87 games.

“The way he batted—he went in with 11 and over or about 12 an over required and he is known for this sort of situation. And he just went in and he hit one boundary and batted the entire time and not going anywhere.

“He wasn’t there, he was not in the middle so I feel he needs a break. Whoever you want to bring in, Pollard needs a break. That’s how I feel.”

I was watching the game on Sunday, I see it the same way. Whatever the issues are, as a professional you have to compete. Pollard should refuse selection if he is not interested in playing for the WI.

I agree with Waqar.

I have been a staunch supporter of Polly from the Stanford days....but I can't condone what he seems to be doing on this tour.

Polly seems to be on a protest 'go slow' ... His batting display in the last innings was pathetic.....he was obviously sending a message to management

He did indicate he was disappointed when Simmo was fired...he is a professional....and he is on tour to play cricket...he can pull out if he doesn't want to play

Andy99 Oct 4, 2016, 6:30:30 AM

Yep, if thats his attitude then no way he should be in the team.
Protest, talk out, strike and whatever but once on the field you play and put in an effort.

BeatDball Oct 4, 2016, 6:47:53 AM

Waqar has gone too far....cease n sekkle. Polly is doing fine.

sunfish Oct 4, 2016, 7:13:33 AM

I saw it the same way. Pollard did not appear to be trying and that's as low as any sports person can get..

Kay Oct 4, 2016, 7:50:28 AM

Didn't he realised that people will see through it?

Isn't it a crime to collect money under false pretence? Although his intention is to stiff and embarrass the WICB I am sure he wouldn't refuse the cheque....

TheTrail Oct 4, 2016, 7:53:13 AM

I am sure two bit Bravo will take an offence to Waqar’s statement.

In addition, Two-bit comm Bishop must be fuming at Wagar’s for exposing his compatriot.

Maispwi Oct 4, 2016, 8:09:48 AM

Why Waqar getting all up in WI business

Waqar just fast and out ah place to suggest WI team selection, and the dropping of a player who could potentially knock the stuffings out of their attack.

Notice all the imps who backing Waqar's suggestions. No wonder that team WI done try.

All around him were falling like flies

And you were HAPPY with his drop

In reply to sunfish

You can say he gave up early but does he negatively impact the team? How do you come to that conclusion. I saw him talking to Holder frequenly and that catch in the 1st ODI!!! Will a person who does not have heart in the game do those? I dont think so.

But on the weight of his returns if he has to be sacked that is understandable. He had a good run but could not use it.

If he plays in the 3rd ODI, I would play him at 3 asking him to set the game up for WI with a chance in power play. Coming in with 10+ RR in every match for 15+ overs does not help

Waqar is outa place to impute any underlying motives. Back in his day would he have called out the illegal methods of reverse swing that were invented and practiced?

This go slow business is lame; just refuse selection ( again)

Narper Oct 4, 2016, 10:23:08 AM

Waqar is just helping out Bishop and Sir Viv

In my opinion, he sounded genuine in his assessment

Based on their commentary, Bish and Viv feel the same way but maybe fraid to publicly call out Polly

I will be shocked if Viv and Bish are in agreement with Polly patting the ball for single after single...and regular dot balls...IN A RUN CHASE.....THAT IS NOT HIS ROLE...AND NEVER WAS....and he never batted like this in the past..and more importantly he is not showing any intent to get after the bowling

Check out these batting stats

1st T20 I....Pollard 9 from 17 balls
2nd T20I...Pollard 18 from 13 ball
3rd T20I...Pollard 16* from 17 balls

1st ODI...Pollard 9 from 7 balls
2nd ODI ...Pollard 22 from 29 balls

74 runs in total of 83 balls....in 5 games....I think de selectors will listed to Waqar and drop[ him fuh nat trying! lol lol

Toney Oct 4, 2016, 11:58:57 AM

Pollard is at his best when bowlers allow him to bat the only way he knows and that is to swing for cow corner. However the Pakistani bowlers did not allow him to do so. Therefore, instead bismirching the character of Powell, why would Waqar not credit his countrymen's bowlers for doing a number on Pollard?

WestDem Oct 4, 2016, 12:22:58 PM

In reply to Toney

instead besmirching the character of Powell

Did Waqar do this to Powell? BTW Waqar is an objective commentator who is only giving his opinion on Polly's performances in this series...he spot on....if someone can all of a sudden look this disinterested, then he should be dropped!

2Didn Pollard score 205 runs from 228 balls in de recent Tri Series against Australia and South Africa. He scored 67 0ff 67 to win de first match while chasing. Ah din hear dat he was batting too slow and dats not his role.

Commie Oct 4, 2016, 1:01:26 PM

Did you miss that part?

Does this team look anywhere close to the team which played the Tri-series?

Does Pollard look like the same Pollard who played the Tri-series?

grugru Oct 4, 2016, 3:16:27 PM

Could it be possible that Pollard was not feeling well but still came out to bat?
We are very quick to condemn our own players.

Mohammad Nawaz to Pollard, out Caught by Shoaib Malik!! Dear me! Did I jinx it? Hope not, nevertheless Pollard's brief and uncertain stint at the crease comes to an end. Has been all scratchy throughout. Lovely indrifter from Pollard, luring the batsman into a loft by mixing it up with loads of air. Pollard falls for the bait and lifts the drive, splatters the
