Cyrille Regis RIP

NineMiles 2018-01-15 04:20:10

Terribly sad news this morning to hear Cyrille Regis has passed away, aged only 59.

Cyrille, Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson were the pioneers for black footballers in the UK back in the late 1970s and were subjected to racist abuse.

Rest in Peace Pioneer! sad

Sad News Regis was indeed one of the pioneers. To this day I can still see one of his goals where he collected the ball around the half mark moved towards goal and let fly a scud missile...a ridiculous strike from about a mile out shock shock

May he RIP

Registe was one of my soccer role models as a teenager. He was compact, good off the ball movement and one hell of a striker- made it seem so easy.

He could never break in to England team in those days where talent was not the only prerequisite.....Cunningham, Anderson, the Savage Brothers.....

Yep... even up to the days of Johnny Barnes in the mid 80s

I remember Garth Crooks, he was good, but I always thought he would ball watch a little to much, not much space creation and pulling defenders...and a bit lazy. Same criticism I have of TT's Kenwyne Jones. In fact I'm harder on KJ because he had height, presence and size.

Those days back in TT...Star Soccer as it was called was a must see on a Sunday afternoon.

Yet 48 goals in 125 appearances for Spurs is not a bad return!

Actually, it is a travesty to mention Kenwyne Jones in the same breath as Garth Crooks. Jones is not in the same league as Crooks!

I'm not saying Crooks was not good, or crappy, don't get me wrong.

At that level all the players have something extra just to be there in the first place.

It's just my opinion, as a player/student of the game back then. He was good, but not

one that I would do a deep study and copy to my style of play. Dwight Yorke reminds me of Crooks a bit.
At times Yorke may seem to be ball watching, in his own zone...a la Hooper, but then he bursts into space
with change of pace...game match done. Etither he assists - Cole- or scored himself.

Cyril Registe was definitely there for me...never miss his games.

In Germany the Bundeslegia was also must see...FC Cologne was the leader of the pack. Kevin Keegan, Hamburg was one I followed...small in stature but punched above his weight.

I know...I hear you..I have a soft spot for kenwyne...but the man refused to manhandle defenders with that size.

He impressed me initially by how successfully he moved from defense at the youth level to striker at the senior level.

It showed me that he has an understanding of positional play. Understanding defensive play should also have assisted him tremendously in his attacking role...but I dont know what happened with his play...to laid back.

yeahh man...as a teen I would study those games...off the ball movement, the spaces, anticipating the moves.

It was a valuable learning experience.

Thanks for the history lesson gents.

I guess the toll of all those years of phlegm spat on him and the indignity of those banana chucked from the stands and terraces must have corroded his heart with time.

More tributes pour in for the Great Cyrille Regis.

A role model and a trailblazer

I remember those days in the late 1970's that trio playing for West Bromich Albion.
There was also Vivian Anderson playing for Nottingham Forest.
Brings back sweet memories of my student days in the UK.
