CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-01-15 07:23:05

ICC Press Release: Two-time world champions the Windies will be the star attraction when 10 sides converge on Zimbabwe next month for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, to battle it out for the two remaining places in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The announcement marks 500 days to the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament, which will be staged in the United Kingdom from 30 May to 15 July.

Queen’s Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club in Bulawayo, Harare Sports Club and Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare and Kwekwe Sports Club, Kwekwe, will share 34 matches between them from 4 to 25 March, with Harare Sports Club staging the final.

The Windies, along with Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe, had missed out on automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 by finishing outside the top eight on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings at the 30 September 2017 cut-off date. These four sides have been joined by Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Scotland and Papua New Guinea, who finished in the top four of the ICC World Cricket League Championship.

Wow, funny ting dat but not surprising tho. An entire 4day tourney completed on the eve of WC qualifiers. Is there any interest btw???

Can WI bring their strongest team

Gayle,Lewis,Bravo,Samuels Hope

Roach, Russell, Cottrell,

Narine,Miller,Benn?

...and any other Super 50 stars?

DIEHARD 2018-01-15 10:38:14

In reply to analyst-kid

I can't see WI getting their house in order to select or attract, Samuels, Roach, Russel, Cotterel, Narine, Benn.

I expect they might get Gayle & Lewis.

I don't think Miller makes the team/squad ahead of Nurse or even Bishoo as an ODI player.

How embarrasing..that we have to play the likes of ..Papau New Guinea and Hong Kong ..smh

Precisely

...and again, is there any interest or do these guys even care?

In reply to DIEHARD.. and a hearing some of these games will not be seen as an ODI.

Indeed. More Victorian-age policies regarding 'status'. The snobbery and elitism continues.

It costs zero to just making it a ODI tournament, but ICC Stats-purists would have none of it.

It's literally the equivalent of the CONCACAF Hex phase if matches vs T&T weren't labelled internationals.

VIX 2018-01-15 11:04:25

it would be best for WI cricket if they don't qualify!

Besides, WI will struggle against Ireland,Zimbabwe and the Afghans.

analyst-kid 2018-01-15 11:15:24

In reply to DIEHARD

Samuels, Roach, Russel, Cotterel, Narine, Benn.

Besides Russell and Narine...what will the others be doing? As far as I know all the rest will be playing in the Super 50 COMING UP.

WICFan 2018-01-15 11:41:26

The Regional 50 Over Tournament will finish on 24 February.

World Cup Qualifiers 4 - 25 March.

Anyone who refuses to play in the WC Qualifying shouldn't be in contention for the World Cup should the West Indies make it.

I agree...players cant always be picking an choosing when they want to play.

analyst-kid 2018-01-15 11:50:53

In reply to WICFan

Now I can agree with that.

Andy99 2018-01-15 11:58:12

Also all players should be required to play the Super50 if they want to make the ODI squad...certain the likes of those who haven't played any 1day cricket in the last 6 months.

How did we find ourselves in this mess

Khaga 2018-01-15 12:17:47

Good then maybe all involved could see the assiness in their ways.
I ain't mind cause if we got to lose to Papau or HK then let me see if more folks wouldn't call for more heads

What will be interested is the team. some folks will think it's below them but will want to raise their hands when the big games come around.

Fully agree, in order to play for WI u must play x amount of games (didn't they say they would make an announcement regarding this early in the New Year?)
and if you don't play the WC qualifiers you can't play WI wC squad.

Damn straight. This is the single most important competition that the Windies will play in this decade.

The ramifications for not finishing in the top two are enormous.

What happens if you can't find a team to play for? Like Bravo?

In reply to bobby

If I were Bravo, I'd take up an offer, if any, from the other regions & play a few games for them.

The CCC team normally selects a couple of experienced guys, he fits the bill.

Andy99 2018-01-15 13:23:28

In reply to natty_forever

You think its fair for them to only come in for WC when the pay out is big?
Nope, they should be available for most series, I'd say an allowance of 1 foreign T20 leagues per year for WI players, 1 because there are is no international cricket during the IPL so basically its the IPL + 1 other league.
So of all the leagues, ECB, BBL, SA, BPL, etc. a player can only miss WI duty to participate in 1 of those leagues, if there's no internationals during any of those other leagues then he can play in them but he cant skip WI duty to play a league more than once a year.

I dunno what the players will be doing, but i just figure between idiotic selection, and finding a way to start fights with players, like they might go with Taylor and Aljo over Cotterel and Roach, they also have been selecting any spinner except Benn.

They might overlook Samuels for JMo and Carter...i can't keep up with the stupidity in team selection, honestly....but I just figure whatever petty grievances they have with overlooked players, is more important to them than a World Cup appearance..after all they have a surplus..

They haven't seen it yet, they not gonna see it again.

This Pak series vs NZ not helping, now they can just shrug and say..see...Pak is much higher rated..and look how easily they've been dispatched

ike they might go with Taylor and Aljo over Cotterel and Roach, they also have been selecting any spinner except Benn.

The thing is against those lesser teams Taylor and Aljo might very well get away and do well but the batting NEEDS these six top order bats: GAYLE LEWIS BRAVO SAMUELS HOPE and a rejuvenated AMBRIS.

Note: Don't forget Powell did very well against ZIM in ZIM..so he could very well be back in the reckoning.

analyst-kid 2018-01-15 14:14:11

WI should be practicing scoring 300 off ALL these teams!

DIEHARD 2018-01-15 14:18:44

In reply to analyst-kid

The batting is where we have a serious..serious..issue in ODIS..Holder..CANNOT bat 6!!! unless its Russell 7 and Rovman 8, then maybe..maybe.

But that 6 looks like the 6 we need, Hope is the only real weak link there as he has a really low SR, he needs to pick it up.

Bravo and Samuels SR also give cause for concern, lets hope they both play Super 50 and work on their game.

Tbh, we have very few batsmen that seem built or the modern ODI game, hopefully the Super 50 unearths a few.

McCarthy could be a good find, Ramdin and Bravo are two real losses to the team, these guys know how to rotate strike and keep the scoreboard ticking

Btw..Did Lendl retire from international duty?

He too could rotate strike pretty good

natty_forever 2018-01-15 14:23:09

rejuvenated AMBRIS.
... suggest he was "juvenated" before?

WICFan 2018-01-15 14:40:48

I see the ICC & ZC are working together to liven the pitches up a bit as well.

Cause i aint' sure if it's JA

Maispwi 2018-01-15 15:39:52

In reply to Andy99

Its interesting that when WI players were in great demand all over the world and could have influenced the contracts they got, which would have allowed them to play some cricket at home, they chose to turn down retainers and opt to play exclusively in the Leagues. Now dat the interest has waned some of them are now eager to return to the fold.

What is needed is for both sides to lock away the egos and craft a sensible working MOU that allows both the players and West Indies cricket to benefit from the talent base

DIEHARD 2018-01-15 16:04:18

I have no information on the Super 50s rosters.

Russel's ban is up at the end of this month, wonder what his plan is

WICFan 2018-01-15 16:54:44

In reply to DIEHARD

I think Russell will probably play some CPL & T/20's in England if he gets a contract.

He's not interested in FC Cricket, probably ineligible for Regional 50's so he needs to get himself occupied.

analyst-kid 2018-01-16 16:56:39

Guys like Gayle,Lewis,Bravo,Samuels and Hope (and Powell) will parade against the minnows once they are playing together.

But we desperately need allrounders and good bowlers.

Cottrell and Roach looked good against NZ and NZ is a top side. Those two start for me.

The search is on for others cause right now I can't vouch for Holder Cummins Gabriel Taylor.

I like Reifer and Miller...I am hoping Benn can return and/or an emerging spinner but Bishoo who did well in Zim must also be considered.
