HEADLINE: Rain takes Windies to next year’s World Cup

CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-03-21 11:27:05

Rain came to the rescue of the Windies, who qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 after defeating defending champions Scotland by five runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method in a Super Six fixture of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

Scotland, chasing 199 for a place in the World Cup, to be staged from 30 May to 14 July, were 125 for five in 35.2 overs when a heavy downpour prevented further play in the match. When play was called off, Scotland needed 74 runs in just over 14 overs.

While the result ended Scotland’s hopes of featuring in their second successive World Cup and fourth overall since 1999, Afghanistan and Ireland are now back in contention if rain affects Thursday’s match between the United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe. If there is no result, then net run-rate will determine the second qualifier behind the Windies.

In the Super Six winner-takes-all match, the Windies, put in to bat, lost Chris Gayle on the very first ball of the match, his seventh career golden duck, and then saw Shai Hope return to the pavilion 12 balls later to slip to two for two.

Agree with the headline and tough luck to the Scots. They still had a match on their hands....

If WI does not make up with oust experienced players we could have plenty problems in 2019 World cup. We will need Narine, Russell, both Bravos and even Pollard. Where is Badree?

In reply to Slipfeeler

The only person we need is Russell.

Let me qualify that, may need... They all turn their backs on WI by following every T20 league in the world. On second thoughts ... Badree might be invited! Let's forget that the others even play cricket....

But how wunnah (all ya) so sure rain rescue windies. I am sure that if rain had stopped that match when Afghanistan had zimbabwe on the ropes everybody would also say the rain save Zimbabwe. And all wunnnah would have been wrong.

So did we!!! All is fair in the game of chance.
We would most certainly have got the better of the Scots even without that unfortunate call for the 5th wicket.

Surprised that no one even mentioned the hiccup suffered by Jason Holder. He may have eaten something during the lunch break that caused him to be totally out of it..... Valuable bowling lost which may have had the Scots on tenterhooks!

Strange and scary situation because I saw Jason 'fading' without any urgency from medicos to assist..... Time stood still.... He was not himself at the press conf.... Sweating profusely and somewhat confused .... I hope he gets appropriate checkup...

As a West Indian I celebrate the victory. However, I express much gratitude to the following three factors for carrying us through to the 2019 World Cup: 1. big thank you too ICC for ensuring there was no DRS so WI could qualify by default.2. A Big thank you to those umpires for giving outs in our favor, knowing there was no DRS or TV coverage to embarrass them. I wonder if ICC told them that the benefit of doubt must go to west Indies because no WI in world cup is a defeat for ICC with crowd turnout 3. A very BIG thank you to mother nature for sending the rains at the right time
