Doctors - weigh in, Nara illness

DirtyDan 2018-04-08 08:59:58

Plenty Guyanese and some Trinis refer to an ailment known as Narr-ah characterized by pain around navel and fixed by a belly rub or back crack.

What is the medical term for this?

Usually caused by over exertion while lifting.

Doesn't that lead to goady?

In reply to DirtyDan

I don't think Guyanese really know what narrah is. Any pain in the abdominal area is considered narrah. lol

That's why dem boys go to med school. They can give it name.

Now some old aunty can fix the problem with a belly rub with coconut oil.

No.

Gody, means to lift. The term is used mainly to reference babies- "Baby need Gody"- means lift the baby wink

But of you lift an heavy object- yes you can get what is called Nara in Eastern UP and in Bihar- the Bjopuri region of India

It seems like it's part of the intestines that go out of place and rubbed back into place - symptoms are bellyache and vomiting

the question is, why only people in Guyana and Trinidad catch this?

DirtyDan 2018-04-08 14:37:15

This term might not be unknown in JA. I recall my paternal great-grand uncle who was Indian (born 190coolsaying "mi narrah a hat mi (hurt me)" to describe belly pain.

These days it is becoming increasingly difficult to find people with the skill to rub nara (the Hindi word for the condition which arises from lifting too heavy an object or performing too strenuous physical activity which results in belly pain and diarrhoea) or to “crack” sprained backs and joints. These two traditional healing skills are only part of the set of traditional healing skills that the indentured labourers brought with them from India. Amazingly, today, some of the younger generation descendants of these indentured labourers are unaware of them.

There was a time when chiropractors did not exist and spinal and joint manipulation for the relief of sprained and dislocated backs and joints were the exclusive domain of the traditional masseurs and those skilled in “cracking” backs. It is interesting to note that many of the techniques used by chiropractors today are identical with those used by the traditional healers. One wonders why we do not train and license a class of these traditional masseurs. Clearly, there are the usual culprits, the vested interest, almost invariably the established big business interest; medical education/training and licensing bodies and institutions and third world apathy.

"Naara" is one thing; "gul naara" is another! smile

The tradition of massaging babies with oil and stretching their joints and rubbing the bones of the lower legs to eradicate bandy legs is now virtually abandoned by young Hindu mothers as being a messy “primitive” practice.

Of course now that the western medical literature is starting to accept and propound the therapeutic and beneficial values of it, the tradition is suddenly seen as valuable and good. The baby massages not only foster the bond between mother and child but help in the physical development of the child.

I remember seeing my younger siblings getting such.

Also, contrary to some self proclaimed Miyaji here, Goadee actually exists in Guyana and Trini.
Sheer False News here!
You could call a jerk (like some here) as "a real anti man or goadee man."
A Goadee is when you have big balls area like after a hernia or elephantiasis.
I saw a text book picture showing a man fetching his goadee in a wheel barrow.

The Hindi word "goad" means lap. Like in Hindi movies you might have heard "maa ki goad" or come to "mother's lap". This has nothing to do with goadee.

Gul naara is a particularly bad case of naara.

DAVE400 2018-04-09 10:52:22

I am all for alternative medicine but rubbing nara was a placebo cure. Stupid diagnosis. Torture and led to fatalities in cases of appendicitis...knew of a case where it caused a rupture and death.

The problem is, most of these nara cases are not professionally diagnosed, it could be something as simple as a stomach virus, especially if it involves multiple symptoms.

Nara cases with diarrhea should raise red flags.
