Chris Gayle, last 300+ WI Test batsman

Slipfeeler 2018-05-09 16:56:27

Based on the current WI batsmen playing test, the T20 attitude of our young batsmen and the lack of patience at the wicket shown by most of our developing test batsmen, it seems likely that Chris Gayle might remain as WI last batsman to make over 300 runs in one test innings.
More importantly, Brian Lara's record is safe among West Indian batsmen.

How dare you mention Chris Gayle and Brian Lara in the same post.

Sacrilegious!

They are both great WI players, one dominated the longer version and the other continues to dominate the shorter version.

Even 7 days would be too short.
Strike rate is essential for a triple...and Brathwaite`s is much too low!

Hope is capable of such a feat.

He has the required mix of aggression and value of wicket.

I agree.
A double ton away ....especially in English conditions....suggests he is well capable.

I agree both Braithwaite and Hope are capable of 300+ but the problem will be they need capable batsmen to stay at the wicket with them to achieve such a feat.

Gayle is still the one good opener West Indies produced since Des Haynes. I doubt if any of our current crop can average 40 unless they play Zimbabwe and Ireland.

I often wondered if he had continue to play test matches, it's quite possible that he might have bettered his 333.

Gordon Grenidge and Desmond Hayles are my favorite opening pair of batsmen. Maybe Gayle and Braithwaite might be formidable opening pair.

Slipfeeler 2018-05-17 09:53:42

Even at his age Gayle is still considered the top opener in the region.

Interestingly enough, it was Lara who identified Gayle as the one most likely to surpass his single innings test score.

Sacrilege did you say?

wink wink

I'm about to post a trivia question to put your statement in an even greater contest.....

the category is "opening partners"

wink wink

Lara knows talent, I am not sure why he is not among WI cricket administrators or at least helping to develop our current crop of "batsmen", especially helping them to understand the value of their respective wickets and how to patiently bat out each segment of the game. Even after making a century, the team usually need as much runs as you can score, no point running back into the pavilion. Only to find the new batsman running after you back into the pavilion.
