Already 0-1 down in the three match series , Sri Lanka were dealt a blow further when the team's most experienced batsman Angelo Mathews made a request to Sri Lanka Cricket to return home ahead of the second Test against West Indies in St. Lucia that will get underway on Thursday (June 14).

Along with Mathews, seamer Lahiru Gamage also will return home having fractured his finger while batting during the first Test which the tourists lost by a massive 226 runs.

Mathews had been sidelined for five months due to a series of hamstring and calf injuries and was bitterly disappointed when he missed out on Nidahas Trophy. He was determined to make a strong comeback in West Indies but an urgent family requirement has forced him to abandon the tour, an SLC official told Cricbuzz on Wednesday (June 13).

Mathews made scores of 11 and 31 in the first Test in Trinidad.

Dasun Shanaka and Danushka Gunathilaka were flown in as replacements and were expected to reach the Caribbean late Wednesday night. Both players will not be considered for selection for the second Test, a source from SLC said.
