HE Guyana Amazon Warriors began their Hero Caribbean Premier League Twent/20 tournament in impressive fashion, whipping the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by six wickets last evening at the National Stadium, Providence.
An astonishing run-chase by the Warriors made a mockery of Patriots total of 146 in match two of the 2018 season. Shimron Hetmyer’s dashing unbeaten 45-ball 79 propelled the Amazon Warriors to their target with 24 balls to spare.
The left-handed Hetmyer was in no mood to hang around in pursuit of a total which, although below-par, seemed it might trouble the hosts on a tacky pitch. A superb display of ball-striking from Hetmyer ensured that was certainly not the case.
He clinically punished fractional errors in length from the Patriots, striking boundaries on both sides of the ground, to end with four sixes and nine fours.
When play began, Chris Gayle was lucky to survive a plumb leg before wicket call early and went on to anchor the innings with a 65-ball 86, but he hardly got any support from the other end; no other batsman went past 20. Keemo Paul (2 for 16 off his four overs) was brilliant and he was well supported by the other Warriors bowlers.

A couple of other points should have been included.
Hetmyer played mostly regular cricket strokes, and only "cow-lashed" on a couple of occasions. A flat six over long-on rose only about 10 feet above the ground. Like just about every substantial Hetmyer innings, it was very entertaining throughout.
Young Nepalese leg-spinner Lamichanne bowled incredibly well. He puts a lot of spin on the ball and bowls both the leg spinner and googly with ease and at will. He still needs to develop more variations, such as bowling the googly on an off-stump line to get the edge or stumping dismissal, but that will no doubt come in due course.
Cotterel bowled really well, despite being a bit expensive. He got the ball to swing into the right-handed batsmen beautifully, but was a bit too full initially. The ball that bowled Ronchi might have bowled just about any right-hander out there.
CWI should work on developing Cotterel, and should certainly keep him close to various WI teams.
These two teams (Warriors and Patriots) both seemed competitive and cohesive, unlike the St Lucia Stars yesterday. Patriots could make a credible argument that they were defeated more by the heavy dew at the Providence Stadium than by the Warriors.
My understanding is that there was a missed stumping of Hety off Lamichhane that could have really changed the tone of this match?

This is actually a good thing. It is possible to accumulate runs with proper cricket strokes. By that I mean if a ball is there for the off drive, why take a chance and pull the ball from off to leg? A lot of our guys take that mentality into test cricket and fail in the process.
It appears most of the guys especially Rovman Powell do that quite a lot.
More often than not, they get bowled when they miss or get caught if the ball is not full or over-pitched.

Like I said above in a previous post, Rovman does that a lot. Out bowled pulling from off to leg.
