HEADLINE: Sherman Lewis replaces Alzarri for India Test Squad to India

CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-09-18 15:33:28

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Right-arm fast bowler, Shermon Lewis will replace Alzarri Joseph in the 15-man squad for the Test Tour of India which starts Thursday, October 4 in Rajkot.

Lewis made his debut at the first-class level for the Windward Islands in March 2017 and took 30 wickets at an average of 21.66 in the 2017/18 West Indies 4Day Championship. He recently toured England as part of the WINDIES A squad where they played against India A and England Lions.

Joseph, in the last week, underwent two fitness assessment procedures and a CWI medical panel has recommended that he be “allowed to continue his rehabilitation to full fitness for international competitions.”

Joseph suffered a stress fracture last November and has since been in intense programmes to get him back to full strength. Since then, he has also played in an international home series against Bangladesh and the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Joseph will continue his rehabilitation programme under the monitoring of medical officials at the High-Performance Centre at Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

In the meantime, some members of the Test squad are already in Dubai and have begun training sessions at the ICC Academy as they continue their preparation for the Test series in India.

Wah happen to the other Joseph from Guyana? He was doing well in A team tours...

Atl_View 2018-09-18 17:24:38

Reifer would have been a better pick..

For what? WI already got Holder for slow medium.. They don't need another..

Lewis won't be playing.. Holder, Gabriel, Roach and Keemo in the squad too I think..

Most likely the attack gonna be

Holder
Gabriel
Roach
Bishoo
Warrican

doosra 2018-09-18 18:05:17

Better batsman too

Check 2017-8 Regional 4 day bowling stats

Come in VOR...one dottie pushed ahead of another dottie to replace a dottie wink

We only need one spinner.. our guys are not wicket takers..so Reifer at least can bat and take a few with his swing.

Str8_Drive 2018-09-19 05:55:22

I hope that this is just a matter of current effectiveness and this move does not indicate that Al JO got injured again or has to remodel his action, still hoping that AL JO will be one for the future.

Saw him in January when the WWI came to town and he was best bowler including those from BIM. Tall with an easy approach and bowls nice lines with a natural outswing.

He has decent pace if not express and I would guess easily mid 80s but there are lots of things to like about him. Certainly quicker than Jason and Kemar for those of you obsessed with pace.

Got injured when the Lions toured the Caribbean as he was in that squad and was decent enough in England.

This is a good forward thinking pick even if he may not be required in India. Thomas, McCoy and others have done well in T20 but at this moment there is nothing to judge their true 4-day class.

I’ve managed to grab snippets of him here and there on various live feeds... I agree entirely with your description of him and generally like what I see.... the bowlers on the recent A tour of England didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory but from what I could see Lewis looked the most threatening... like all of them he seemed to bowl too short too often but hopefully he’s learnt from that.

Tough assignment a debut tour to India but I suppose in reality he’s unlikely to get a game.... you never know though .... I wish him luck anyway.

Dude, Raymon Reifer bowls too slow and his batting is not up to International standard.
Jason Holder already is in the team, you don't need another medium to slow bowler, whose batting is not up to the standard require for the International level.
Have a look at his stats, and tell us why he should be selected?
Raymon Reifer

Jason is a batting allrounder, it will be crazy not to see the difference in his game to Reifer's.
They both plays for a club, that produced one of Barbados best Medium fast bowler, who can also bat.
I've watchedd Dennis Atkinson bowled, neither Jason nor Raymon meet the standard set by him, as a bowler.

analyst-kid 2018-09-20 15:07:33

Judging by his big runs against a powerful Aus team in the late fifties/early sixties....those guys don't seem to be as good a batsman as Atkinson either!

tc1 2018-09-20 15:08:54

In reply to openning

Dennis was a defensive bowler who played 22 matches for the WI , he took 41 wickets at a avg of 35, Jason has taken 81 wks for an avg of 29
Jason has 2 tons with a batting avg of 30, Dennis has 1 ton for an avg of 31.

Tell me what standard did Dennis set that Jason has not surpassed.

Stop following Opening and do your own analysis. This is Atkinson that skippered Bim before the 3 Ws especially Sir Everton in the late 60s.

Have you ever seen Denis bowled or you just comparing Dennis stats over his short International career?
BTW, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh were not part of the International system when he played,
England and Australia five test format, was the format of the time.
For anyone that watched the two and want to match Jason with him, has to be looking at colour and not performance.

The local fans, used to say Denis bowled the ball, like it is tight to a string.

I am guessing you seen him bowled and he was a good regional bowler, stop trying to rewrite the game of cricket to suit your adulteration.

I saw him bowled, both at the local and regional level.
I saw him in a match at Bank Hall, bowling to Everton with two slips, a gully, silly maiden and two guys in Everton's back pocket.

A sound batsman and a bowler of medium-pace offcutters, Denis Atkinson made his debut in India in 1948-49, and was a Test regular in the mid-1950s. He was captain for three Tests against Australia in 1954-55, in the absence of Jeff Stollmeyer, and later led West Indies to a series victory in New Zealand. His finest hour, though, came in the fourth Test of that Australian series. Facing a total of 668, West Indies collapsed and were 146 for 6 when Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiaza came together. In more than a day the pair added 347 for the seventh wicket, a first-class record for 40 years and still the best in Tests. Atkinson contributed 219, his career-highest, and also took seven wickets in the match. On his sole tour of England in 1957 he began memorably, taking 10 for 62 in the first match at Worcester, but later he was overworked and a strained shoulder affected his performance

If he was playing between 157-63, I would had seen him also.
I had the opportunity of going to Private lessons on Saturday, after lessons I would walk to any place that Empire was playing, within the city limits.
So I've walked to Bank Hall, Kensington, Carlton, The Park, Darrell Road.
I had my first bicycle about 61, so after school, I'll go to Bank Hall, sometimes to queen Park to see the practice sessions.

Can you tell me what year that Empire won the cup, with Keith Boyce being a bluet?

tc1 2018-09-20 23:15:08

In reply to openning

it has to be 63, since he came to Maple in 64 and went to UK in 65 with John Shepherd.
Everton was voted out as captain for the 64 season at Empire, Keith played football for Empire in 63 and made the bim team as goal keeper.

you being a bluet should remember the date, I recall listening to the tea time score between our Empire vs Wanderers and playing cricket at school.I think Sir E and Keith made 1/2 centuries each.

I am fully aware of Keith playing for Maple, but have no memory of him at Empire, he may had play for a short period.
I'e watched Maple playing against Yorkshire, prior to the promotion to 1st Division.

you being a bluet should remember the date,

Thats when I was growing up in Bim, my friends here knows nothing about cricket.

What I know about ATKINSON is that he and DEPEIZA made a world record seventh wicket partnership against the most powerful team in the world at that time,Austraila.... in the presence of Weekes Worrell Walcott, Sobers and Collie Smith.

Keith played cricket and football at Empire and make Bim team in both sports while a blue, he also played football at Maple.

Keith as a footballer was more crazier than being a cricketer, just imagine Keith as a footballer, the man played forward , midfield, full back and goalie. he made the team as a goal keeper.

This could be a summer job for a number youngsters.

No that’s fine... I only saw a limited amount of the cricket via a live feed and Lewis was the the most impressive of that small and limited sample.. to be honest the only other bowler that looked ‘anything like’ was Holder.... I presume you saw a lot more than I did.
