HEADLINE: Bravo and Braithwaite return to ODI Squad

CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-12-04 12:44:12

DHAKA, Bangladesh- The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies has named a 15-member squad to play Bangladesh in three (3) One Day Internationals on December 9,11,14 in Bangladesh.

The selection sees the return of Darren Bravo to the ODI squad, along with T20 skipper Carlos Brathwaite and Roston Chase. Recent debutants, Fabian Allen, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Oshane Thomas retain their places following the ODI series against India last month.

Due to the absence of regular Captain Jason Holder, CWI’s Board of Directors has approved Rovman Powell as interim Captain, as the WINDIES seek to reverse the recent 2-1 home series defeat in July 2018.

Chairman of Selectors Courtney Browne said, “With two more ODI Series before the 2019 World Cup, the Bangladesh series allows us to narrow our search for our final 15-member World Cup squad. In the absence of captain Jason Holder, the panel believes the team can still be competitive, especially with the return of Darren Bravo. Darren’s experience will add value to the batting, which in turn will place selection pressure for spots in the squad. The selection panel therefore takes this opportunity to wish the team much success in Bangladesh.”

The full team is as follows:
Rovman Powell (Captain), Marlon Samuels, Devendra Bishoo, Roston Chase
Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo
Shai Hope, Carlos Brathwaite, . Keemo Paul
Kieran Powell, Fabian Allen, Kemar Roach,
Sunil Ambris, Oshane Thomas

Marlon Samuels plays no cricket in between these sporadic appearances for CWI. This makes no sense. Look at the uproar in India led by Gavaskar because MS Dhoni has taken time off. And Samuels is no Dhoni.

Let Hetmyer and Samuels open, only pick one of the "specialist" openers
Neither are among our 5 best batsmen, our 5 best batsmen should play

Hetmyer
Samuels
Bravo
Hope
Chase
Ambris
Powell
Carlos
Allen
Roach
Thomas

anthonyp 2018-12-04 14:21:21

These selectors really clueless.. How d hell ah youngster like Pooran cant make this shyte squad?

I hope Pooran, Rutherford, Hety and the others get T20 contracts and forget about WI cricket..

timeless99 2018-12-04 14:23:27

Chase just avg 6 how did he get into this team

WICFan 2018-12-04 14:29:11

Unless one opens or comes in at 6, I don't see how Bravo, Hetmyer, Hope & Samuels play in the same XI.

Now you know why I gavce up this WI sh....te long ago.I have no promlem with who is captain.Just concern as was the case with
Holder when Lloyd slotted him. BUT the person who should be leading this squad is HETMEYER.

But what seems clear and strange is that the performances in regional 50 tournament did not count towards selection at all.
What the fact else Cornwall must do to gain selection. ?

I can understand the bias against Blackwood ,McCarthy and Campbell but surely Cornwall should be in the squad and Pooran too for both 50/50 and 20/20.
Carter can well feel all done too.He was one opf the most assured batsmen in the tournament.

Is one suppose to assume that the regional 50/50 of October will have weight in selection for the ODIs against England and the
World Cup when they will be much staler in worth ?

I am at a loss. At least this time, the selectors/committee seemed to have met. Better they hadn't.
big grin big grin big grin

Seems like the selectors don't want to give the captaincy to Carlos for obvious reasons smile

TheTrail 2018-12-04 16:28:42

The selectors had Carlos on probation for the T20i series that just concluded.

Roven Powell will also be the T20i captain in this series tour.

Carlos should consider himself lucky to be playing for the WI after the T20i world cup. His stats do not show he has progressed one iota.

This is like comedy central that Samuels is still playing windies cricket. Since he got hit, he hangs on the back foot and is very reluctant against pace. And this is coming from one of his biggest fans. He is well past his sell date.

I fully endorse your sentiments. These selectors are a pack of jokers!!

As much as I love(d) to see Marlon Samuels bat, at this point, the only place he should be seen in West Indies colors is on Youtube.

Make Runs Or Make Way- No Runs, No Excuses!!

Some Guys Have All the Luck.

Right now, sad to say, Samuels, seems to be one of them. At present he is existing more more luck than on performance.

NEXT!!!!

Well it is now known why the Selectors took their time in releasing their selection, they felt it would be vigorously questioned. It might have been a better idea to give the captaincy to someone who have done it before at the international level.

analyst-kid 2018-12-04 17:56:17

This selection was done right after the Indian ODI series...at that time Chase had performed well in the Test series and he was suggested for ODIS.

Carlos selection was a result of the Super 50s but where is Akeem Jordan or Ottley? Obviously Chase's spin options trumps them although I disagree.

Reifer also did very well in the Super 50s as well as McCarthy,Campbell and Blackwood...any of them could have replaced Samuels but obviously they are still looking at Marlon's experience.

analyst-kid 2018-12-04 18:04:15

Poor Cornwall....him and Akeem Jordan/Ottley would have been my picks.

That actually makes me think..perhaps they wanted to make sure everybody they selected would not bail out at the last minute...maybe they had to wait until someone was willing to accept the captaincy, maybe they offered it to others first..who knows, but something rotten in the state of Denmark

Samuels, most of the times, rises to the occasion when the chips are down. He is the type of batsman I would place my bet on in crunch times, which is now, especially against this Bangladesh spin attack.

BTW, allyuh are complaining about not enough experienced players; Samuels has stuck around to do his part, and allyuh still cussing him.

NYCGURU 2018-12-04 18:46:19

In reply to TheTrail

First of all, i very rarely post. The only thing i have complained about was the exclusion of Hetty from the setup. My feeling was, and i stated it on numerous occasions was that we did not have enough batting talent in the region to keep him glued to the bench. He is not without flaws, but he is not going to learn from watching Paint block half volleys. Am curious, when was the last time Samuels played a meaningful innings for the windies. I would have remembered, because he has been my favorite windies batsman to watch when on song...

Dukes 2018-12-04 19:26:59

My team has 4 changes from the one selected.
1.Nicholas Pooran for Marlon Samuels
2.John Campbell for Chanderpaul Hemraj
3.Sherfane Rutherford for Kieran Powell
4. Khary Pierre for Devendra Bishoo

sunfish 2018-12-04 19:55:36

Bishoo and K Powell stinking up the place.

1-Hope
2-Hemraj
3-Bravo
4-Samuels
5-Hetmyer
6-Chase
7-Powell
8-Allen
9-Paul
10-Roach
11-Thomas

Powell, Samuels and Chase to collectively bowl 10 overs.

Did anyone here remember the 3rd 1-day with India less than a month ago? who was the best bowler in that match for Windies with 3 for 12.....just to enlighten those that really do not remember...Samuels

Raggs 2018-12-04 22:01:29

Rov Powell must have a fantastic cricket brain. Cos his bat gone dumb.

dayne 2018-12-05 05:30:15

The Selectors it seem selected the players who made themselves available, but for the W/C the team would be different, However I would have given the captaincy to Carlos B or K Powell, as both are more experience at it.

Rovman is a product of CCC, that automatically qualifies him for captaincy/leadership.

And while at it, remember CCC's Bajan connection.

I think the selectors are signalling that Powell & Brathwaite are keeping the places of Gayle & Holder warm.

Powell is more likely to make the World Cup team.

HEADLINE: Bravo and Braithwaite return to ODI Squad

One would've expected more positive reaction to such a headlined thread.

The hearty welcome back to our hero, Bravo, for instance.

Instead all we can hear is continued bickering over Rovman's appointment as interim captain.

Interim, get it?
