" We don't wait to figure out what the condition of the pitch is going to be, we got to read it really early and alter our games accordingly which I think we failed to do in the last tours (SA and Eng). When we have done it we have won games but we will have to do it for longer periods to be able to win series which is our goal. We don't want to be a side that plays exciting cricket one Test match. We want to be a consistent side and for that we need to adapt quicker than we have in the past." - Virat Kohli, India captain.

Virat Kohli -
"We will bat first, looks like a nice hard wicket with a nice covering of grass. Runs on the board will be handy. Evey tour is an opportunity, it's a difficult challenge in Australia. We are looking forward to a challenging series, I love playing here in Adelaide, the wicket is good and the stadium is great. Rohit Sharma will bat at six, he can bat well with tail, has the shots on these kind of wickets"

Tim Paine -
"We would have batted as well, some damp spots and we will look to make the best of that. Nice to start in Adelaide, we will look to do our best. We think 3 pacers and Nathan will do the job, they are pretty fresh and we have a all-round attack. We expect the batsmen to stand-up, we have good players who have done well domestically over the past five-six years

Pat Cummins to Kohli, out Caught by Khawaja!! Stunning catch from Khawaja and India fall further into the mire. Another batsman falls to the drive and India are three down now. But this is a stupendous catch at gully, full and wide of off, looking to make Kohli drive. He obliged, went with hard hands and the edge flew to the left of Khawaja. It was past him and it was travelling at a rate of knots, the Australian number three flew to his left and came up with a stunner. A catch that could win the match for Australia. Lyon to Rahane, 1 run, just past FSL! A drop indeed. Marcus Harris, the debutant. Rahane shimmed down a touch and had to adjust on the clip off his pads, the ball zipped off the pitch and rushed onto him to smash the splice, it went flying to the left of FSL and all Harris could manage was a fingertip on that. Another day

Lyon to Rahane, SIX, enough of block dance! Rahane uses his feet, gets closer to the pitch of the delivery and clubs Nathan Lyon over mid-wicket. That's a statement and a half from Jinks who's had a bit of history with Lyon (Refer the stat below at the start of this over)

Hazlewood to Rahane, out Caught by Handscomb!! That's the worst shot of the morning. Even Rahane would agree to that statement. It was full and wide, testing Rahane if he can drive and the Indian vice captain accepted the invitation gleefully; only to send a booming edge to Handscomb (just above his head) at second slip. A classic case of throwing your wicket away. The delivery was miles outside off stump.

Lyon to Rohit, SIX, risky from Rohit but he survives! Tries to unsettle Lyon with a slog sweep and didn't quite connect it that well. Harris at deep square was interested for a while and did grab it but the momentum took him past the ropes. He tried hard to parry it back into play but the foot just touched before he could throw it back in
37.3
Lyon to Rohit, out Caught by Marcus Harris!! Brain fade as usual from Rohit! How many times have we seen him do this in Test cricket? Gets a start, gets set and then throws away his wicket with an outrageous shot. Wanted to unsettle Lyon, that's alright but surely, there was a better option available. Uses his feet and then tries to slog sweep this over deep square leg. Always a gamble with the ball turning a bit and he gets a top edge that goes way up. Harris has no trouble this time in pouching this skier. What an absolute waste of a wicket! Credit to Lyon though, he's induced this with some terrific bowling.

Hazlewood to Pujara, out Pujara Run Out!! Sensational from Pat Cummins. He has one stump to aim at from short midwicket, which Pujara factors in as he decides to risk the single. This is a length ball that Pujara works into the on-side and is desperate to retain strike. What follows is pure brilliance. Cummins moves to his right, picks it up one-handed and hits the bulls-eye while falling to the ground. Pujara is a yard short. To produce such an effort so late in the day, wow!

Ishant to Finch, out Bowled!! Sensational from Ishant, but that is a terrible shot from Finch, can't be playing those ambitious drives so early into the innings. India drove to their doom yesterday, Finch follows suit today. Pitched up and nipping back into the right-hander, Finch got a good stride forward on the drive, doesn't cover for the line, gets an inside edge and the off and leg-stumps are sent cart-wheeling. Ishant loved the sight, so did the Indians. Kohli is pumped as he is always.

Ashwin to Shaun Marsh, out Bowled!! Terrible shot and Marsh is outta here! There were many outrageous shots by the Indians yesterday and this one would match them for sure. Ashwin has a wry smile, he knows this is a gift. Was a floated half-volley outside off, width on offer and that tempted Marsh who went for a real expansive drive. Not a wise shot to play early on, with this track playing slow and all he managed was an inside edge that trickled back onto the stumps. India have begun with a bang.

Ashwin to Khawaja, out Caught by Pant!! Ripper from Ashwin! With the kind of form and patience Khawaja was showing, it needed something special to get him out and that's exactly what India's off spinner has produced. Slowed this down considerably and got the off break to kick up off the pitch, Khawaja wasn't entirely forward to it and ended up getting a faint bit of glove on it. Pant instantly knew it and so did the Indians but it took a DRS to convince Dharmasena

Ponting on batting talent in Australia

India faced almost the same number of deliveries on day one and they scored 59 more than the home side; lost a couple of more wickets of course. This day will go down in the history books for one of Australia's slowest batting displays in the 21st century, and make no mistake, Indian bowlers were terrific from scratch

only a couple of them average over 40.
The Aussies are fighters, nevertheless. Head batted really well, against really good bowling from India. Ashwin got the best results on Day 2, but Bumrah must have been the main threat. An unusual vertical stiff-arm action, he bowls at 140+, and gets the ball to seam viciously from outside off, into right-handers. His leg-cutter moves far less horizontally, but his very quick arm action requires super quick reaction from the batsman.
Very intriguing match, with both teams exceeding my expectations.

Starc to Ashwin, out Caught by Marcus Harris!! Oh dear! Another soft dismissal and India aren't making the advantage count. Banged in short and at the stumps, Ashwin swivelled across on the pull, doesn't get on top of the bounce, as a result - the top-edge is found and it's straight down the throat of Harris at deep square leg. Rahane is being left stranded, India's lead is 318.

Lyon to Rahane, out Caught by Starc!! Five wickets for Lyon and India are falling like nine pins! Rahane went for the reverse sweep, stroked it pretty well, but couldn't keep it down and found Starc at backward point. Reward for perseverence, he's toiled hard, kept a lid on the scoring and is now reaping the rewards. Perhaps saw the attempted shot from the batsman and drifted it full, no way Rahane could have kept it down.

Lyon to Shami, out Caught by Marcus Harris!! Oh dear! This is baffling cricket from India, have they thought they have enough on the board? Senseless cricket once again, first-ball and Shami has his dancing shoes on, comes down the track, doesn't get anywhere close to the ball, still went through with the swipe and found deep mid-wicket to perfection. Lyon is on a hat-trick now.

Quick end to India's innings after the lunch break.

Ashwin to Finch, out Caught by Pant!! Pops up to short leg and it's given by the umpire. Finch's reaction is a little puzzling. He walks up to his partner, consults with him briefly and then walks off. Surely he knows whether he's hit it? Lovely flight and dip on this off-break from Ashwin as he lands it close to the footmarks outside off. He drew Finch forward, got him committed and then extracted a good deal of turn and bounce. From the replays, it's hard to say with any certainty if it brushed the glove. But Finch was happy to walk off. India have their breakthrough, and it'll also be tea.

Big day for Ravichandran Ashwin who is expected to be the big threat today. Yes, there aren't too many marks outside the left hander's off stump for him to work with but he doesn't need those to trouble southpaws, does he? For all the overseas criticism that he has got over the years, this is a shot at redemption.

Ishant to Head, out Caught by Rahane!! That's a beauty by Ishant! Gets Australia's first innings top scorer with a snorter. Bangs it short and surprises the batsman. Head had no clue about the ball as he looked to fend it away and was in no position whatsoever. The ball hits the splice of his willow and lobs towards gully where Rahane takes it with ease. Just the wicket India were looking for and it's their most experienced pacer who has given them the breakthrough. Can hear a few drums playing in the background as the fans in the Indian contingent are delighted.

Bumrah to Shaun Marsh, out Caught by Pant!! That's a massive strike by Bumrah! Body blow for Australia as the well-set Marsh has to go. Lovely delivery this, just short of that fuller length with the inward angle, pacy and just straightened a tad as well. Marsh was lured into playing at it and took the faintest of edges through to Pant. The Indians knew it straightaway and up went the umpire's finger.

Ashwin to Pat Cummins, no run, lovely delivery but that's a review wasted! Lovely off break that turns sharply, Cummins went for the drive and got beaten on the inside edge. Rahane was excited but generally there wasn't much of an appeal. Yet, VK tries the DRS and is proven horribly wrong. Nothing on Snicko and HotSpot
India review. Ashwin wasn't that confident but first slip was. That prompts Kohli for the DRS. Nothing on HotSpot and Snicko. Review wasted.

Ashwin to Pat Cummins, no run, good review!
Australia review. Cummins has been given out bat-pad. Is there anything on HotSpot? Nope. Doesn't seem to be anything on Snicko either though there is slight murmur. Remember, the third umpire needs conclusive evidence to overturn the call. Okay, the third umpire feels there's absolutely nothing and the on-field call is reversed.

Bumrah to Paine, out Caught by Pant!! Oh dear! That's a very soft dismissal for Paine, he fought hard and has thrown his wicket away. 10th catch of the match for Pant, he equals the Indian record for most dismissals in a game - along with Saha. Coming to the ball, it was short and just outside off, Paine was rocking back on the pull, gets hurried for pace and all he managed was a top-edge. Pant called for the catch, ran across to his left and held on to the skier. Is it the game for India?
