HEADLINE: Blame yourselves not the players

CaribbeanCricket.com 2018-12-16 07:10:31

ONCE again the leadership of Cricket West Indies (CWI) is blaming the players for their lack of commitment and discipline and for the sad state of West Indies cricket. Just a few days ago, Dave Cameron, the president of CWI questioned the commitment of the players and warned that “serious decisions” will be taken at board level to curb the problem. He stressed that the board was spending “millions of dollars” to develop players but was not managing to maximise its investment.

The players and coaches must accept responsibility for the team’s poor performance but so too must CWI. Instead, the leadership of CWI has adopted the “Trumpian” philosophy of blaming other people and other factors for its own incompetence, mistakes and failures. This blame culture is endemic in CWI; it encourages members to dismiss crucial and accurate feedback about themselves and their performance and to ignore deficiencies in the board’s management and leadership. Effective leaders do not blame other people or circumstances for results. They look for the circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, they create them.

Blame is about the past, not the future. Instead of creating hope, aspiration and growth it produces fear, anger, resentment and defensiveness. It reminds players about what they have been and what they have done, not what they can become and what they can achieve. CWI must now see its players in terms of future potential not past performance or behaviour.

The depth of an organisation’s motivation and self-discipline often determines the level of its performance. Building awareness, responsibility, commitment and self-discipline should therefore be CWI’s first important priorities. That the president is complaining about the players’ lack of commitment confirms the fact that CWI has failed to create the environment in which those values and priorities can grow and flourish.

When I speak to former players about West Indies cricket, without exception, they point their fingers at CWI for the weak state of the game. They go to great lengths to stress that none of its members has had any experience in elite sport nor any understanding of what is required to achieve success at the highest levels of cricket. Some of these players even claim that performance on the cricket field is less important to CWI than some of its business imperatives.

Performance-based salary contracts have to be introduced, to create player motivation and hopefully induced consistency in performances. Also guaranteed selection is not conducive towards consistency in performance.

How about performance based assessment for Crooked Dave and his band of brigands? The buck stops at the top.

The entire administrative bodies of cricket in the Caribbean and the influence of T20 cricket, are the main contributors to the poor state of cricket in the regions. It was irresponsible for the voting members in the region to re-elect Dave Cameron as President of the Board, it was irresponsible to disband the Sagicor training program, almost 75% of the current team is made up of players who attended that program, so it had some positive effect.

You can't blame the influence of T-20 cricket. Other countries also have that to deal with, and are not seeing the results WI seeing, the only thing unique to us along with geographic/political are the administrators

POINT 2018-12-16 18:33:21

The stark fact is that those in the Worst International Cricket Board in the Commonwealth aka the WICBC ; are akin to a very well known Axiom .

" YOU SIMPLY CANNOT TEACH OLD

DOGS NEW TRICKS " .

I have been and am a consistent and
continuous Critic of ALL those in
the Governance of West Indies Cricket since 2003 .

The stark truth is that those in the
governance of ALL Cricket in the Region relish Mimicking those who
founded the WICBC 90 YEARS AGO .

This is precisely why I call them the MIMIC MEN , due to their autocratic behaviour , especially to
Our Players .

THEY HAVE CONTINUED THE AUTOCRATIC

BEHAVIOUR OF THOSE WHO FOUNDED THE

WICBC . IN ESSENCE THEY ARE AKIN TO

LORDS & THE PLAYERS THEIR SERFS ;

THIS IS WHEN WE ARE LIVING IN THE

21st. CENTURY .

The result of this aloofness , on their part , in my opinion is at the
Heart of the Problem .

THE RESULT OF THIS ASININE BEHAVIOUR

HAS PRODUCED A GULF BETWEEN THOSE IN

THE GOVERNANCE OF WEST INDIES

CRICKET AND OUR PLAYERS . OBVIOUSLY

SUCH BEHAVIOUR SPAWNS ANIMOSITY

THAT IS FUELLED MAINLY BY THE MIMIC

MEN .

POINT 2018-12-16 18:46:40

The fact is that when the Mimic Men
decided to host the World Cup in the Region , they went to the Regional
Governments with Hat in Hand Begging
for concessions to host the World Cup.

THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS DID ALL THAT

WAS REQUIRED TO ASSIST THESE MODERN

DAY PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN .

I vividly recall in this very Forum
that in return for doing what needs
to be done I stated :

THAT THE GOVERNMENTS IN THE REGION

NEEDED TO GET THE WICBC TO SIGN A

LEGALLY BINDING DOCUMENT STATING

THAT THE WICBC WOULD UNDERGO SERIOUS

RESTRUCTURING .

Sadly that did not happen , and so
the WICBC was left to carry on doing
Business as usual .

WHEN THE GOVERNMENTS IN THE REGION

HAD A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE

WORST INTERNATIONAL CRICKET BOARD IN

THE COMMONWEALTH , AKA THE WICBC TO

CHANGE ITS 90 YEARS OLD STRUCTURE

THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS DID NOT DO

ONE BLASTED THING .

Essentially they let the WICBC off
the Hook ; when they were in a position to make the WICBC reform .

POINT 2018-12-16 18:58:38

People in this Forum need understand
that Most if not ALL of the Persons in
the Region who profess to be Sports
Journalists are actually Lackeys of
the WICBC .

Their Job is to perpetually be critical of the Players while saying
Nothing about those in the Governance
of West Indies Cricket .

IT IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE THAT ONE CAN

READ AN ARTICLE CRITICAL OF THE

WICBC . THE AUTHOR OF THAT ARTICLE

THAT HAS BEEN CRITICAL OF THOSE IN

THE WICBC IS RUDI WEBSTER ; WHO

OBVIOUSLY IS NOT ONE OF THE WICBC

LACKEYS .

Why y'all have to put up that chap's picture?

What great, much less good deed has he done for the game?

Are we revering him for pulling the plug on WI cricket?

Slipfeeler 2018-12-17 10:31:21

That's an entirely different narrative, I posted before that CWI needs to be accountable to the fans or sponsors since apparently the Regional Boards seemingly are in bed with CWI. However, we cannot throw money at players and hope that they might perform consistently.

bobby 2018-12-17 10:45:31

So why are we throwing the money earned by the players at Crooked Dave and his brigands with no accountability? Is it different strokes for different folks?

Slipfeeler 2018-12-17 10:55:49

If you understood my post, you will see that it asking some of your same questions regarding accountability of CWI to fans and sponsors.
