It was a long wait but it's finally here.

Purewater / R Danny Williams JC Invitational 2019

How will the new transfer rules affect high school athletics? Max 2 class 3, 2 class 2 and 2 class 1 transferees allowed.

mikesiva 2019-01-05 11:36:11

In reply to Headley

With the new running synthetic surface all the track records will be reset, having been established on the old grass track, but the field events won't be affected.

Action will be in the 100m, 800m, 3,000m, 5,000m, 70m, 80m, 100m and 110m hurdles events, with the 400m hurdles being a new event. The field events this year are long jump, discus, high jump, shot put and pole vault.

Yes sah. Here we go. Looking at some early results dominated by JC,Jago and Cbar.

Headley 2019-01-06 08:43:44

In reply to Mikesiva and RoyalDad

Seems like CBar, Jago and JC had a great time. We will have to wait to see what KC has to offer.

Meanwhile Petersfield dominating in the west. County of Cornwall FC Meet Shaquena Foote continues her amazing career. First in the 400mh and the 1500m

STETHS keeping their cards close to their chest.

I will get really excited when the 400m and to a lesser extent the 100m start.

Correction:
These rules came into effect Jan 1, 2019. They will not apply to athletes procured prior to that date. The effect of the new rules may not really be felt until the 2021 season when the number of eligible transferees would have dwindled to conform with the new rules.

Jamaica College's Safin Willis leapt an impressive 7.40m (0.4 mps) and won the Class One long jump in arguably the performance of the PureWater/JC/R Danny Williams Athletics meet yesterday.

The meet, held on the grounds of Jamaica College (JC), is one of the first athletic events this year and supporters turned out in their numbers to witness history being created on the newly laid eight lane red synthetic track.

With a seating capacity of approximately 2,000 over three stands to the right of the 100m lane, fans were treated to some outstanding performances which raised a few eyebrows and which signalled a good start to the year.

The attendance was better than at the last West Indies home Test match

And to think JC was my 1st choice at common entrance. However, did not regret one bit when they sent me to KC and discovered the absolute greatness of that institution.

KC did not send many athletes to this event as in previous years. Will have to wait and see down the road.

Could be a close one this year as the Hope Rd school is coming with all guns blazing.

Anyone reach out to Jamstar?

RoyalDad 2019-01-07 05:49:01

In reply to Headley

Yes,all three schools came out blazing.

Any info on our 400 runners all classes?

Headley 2019-01-07 08:39:29

In reply to RoyalDad

No info as yet. KC had some youngsters - class 3 and 4 - at the Excelsior Ted Dwyer Meet in December 2018. The class 3 and 4 had some promising 400m runners but that was a grass track so we need to see them on a real track.

Congratulations. JC has raised the bar for High School athletics infrastructure. Very impressive and I hear there are plans to make it even better.

I am keen to see how much progress JC makes this year with coach Harrison.

They have a lot of land up there. Two complete football fields so their infrastructure was well within means to improve.

JC look like they're coming to run this year, especially on the hurdles side.

Jago should make a statement....not to overlook them.

Class 3 Boys 400m Final Champs 2018

This was a very fascinating race. The top 3 boys were under 50 secs. From memory I can only remember Chris Taylor 48.72 and Bann 49.13 under 50 secs as class 3.

I am waiting with bated (6 pages were spent on the proper spelling of bated in the early years of CC.com) breath to see how these youth do in class 2.

Likewise looking forward to some improvement from both.
Which meet on this weekend?

Douglas Foresst and Kirvine meet.

Headley 2019-01-10 09:15:19

In reply to RoyalDad

Williams just needs to stop rocking from side to side and run upright with a little more kneelift and he will make a significant improvement.

I have been depending on the usually reliable JAAA website to see upcoming events but the site is not being updated as frequently as it should be. I will email Warren.

Second headmaster and member of the teaching staff from inception in '26 till retirement in '71.

KC has usually been well represented at Kirkvine which is a grass track. Nowadays coaches don't like to risk sprinters on grass. Sprinters may be at the DF Meet and distance runners at Kirkvine.

Headley 2019-01-11 09:21:33

Matherson now at Florida State

Good to know he is fit and running.

Headley 2019-01-11 09:31:16

Michael Johnson recovers from stroke.

Nowhere in the article does it mention that MJ was checking his blood pressure before the stroke. He talks about eating right and keeping fit. If one is black checking one's blood pressure is also a requirement, especially after 40.

Headley 2019-01-11 19:09:28

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes also saw where Chambers has transferred to UM. That's Bloomfield, Allen and Chambers gone from AU after 2 years. Wilson I understand was not able to satisfy the Florida State academic requirements.

Headley 2019-01-12 12:19:55

Bann at University of Kentucky, Natalia Whyte at Florida Central, Ewers at FSU, Matherson at FSU, Wilson at Barton State CC.

Nice Feature on the Noles. Will be watching Ewers and Matheson closely.

RoyalDad 2019-01-12 18:52:36

In reply to Headley

Imagine Bann finally winning a race after these years. They will get him in shape as he looks a little heavy.

Natalliah is the real deal. She should dominate the collegiate ranks this year.

Ewers should do the same on the men's. with Chambers on his heels.

Matherson with the big boys now and it may take a year or two to inch closer, but he has the necessary tools around him and pray he stays healthy.

Hope the same for Wilson, as he is very talented. Will stay at the CC ranks for a year or so and then transfer.
Makes you wonder why Taylor didn't leave the kids and move on.

well he has nothing to prove at champs. My only thought (pure speculation and guessing) is that he is trying to get some CXCs, or do the SATs. I have no clue about his academics so that is purely a guess on my part.

Only thing Taylor could really do at champs is take Bloomfield's 400M record.

Event 23 Boys 14-15 400 Meter Dash class 2
MEET: 50.80 R Kevon Stone 2016 Age Team
Name Finals Finals

#1990 Joseph, Michael 1 51.16

#1483 Williams, Tyrese 2 51.33

#7975 Heywood, Devonté 3 51.93

#1407 Hinds, Tafar-Hi 4 52.03

#1873 Hamm, Tahj 5 52.11

#2449 Ashman, Sherwayne 6 52.37

#7973 Gardner, Tajay 7 52.51

I mentioned above that Tyrese Williams was one of three class 3 boys in the 400m to go sub 50 at Champs 2018 and I am very keen to see how they progress. Williams is now in class 2 and running well. Heywood, Hamm and Gardner whose times were slower than his are second year class 2 and well known as good 400m runners.

McKenley meet this weekend.??

What kind of representation will KC have??

Last year it was a tit for tat with Gibson.

Is Kerr still a class 3 athlete??

Headley 2019-01-14 10:26:32

In reply to RoyalDad

McKinley/Wint this on Sat. See schedule of meets below:

Upcoming Meets

We will have to wait and see if KC will attend.

Kerr is now in class 2 with Bouwahgjie and Stennett. The class 3 youth to watch out for is Chris Seaton. He was on the 4x100m class 3 relay team last year. He was also a 1.82m high jumper and a 6.03 long jumper last year. Came 3rd in the high jump at Champs. I believe he ran some class 4 races last year. That may also be why he only did one individual event at Champs.

RoyalDad 2019-01-14 17:33:13

In reply to Headley

Our class 2 looks unbeatable. Such talent. I thought Kerr was still class 3.
However,I will look out for the athlete you mentioned.
Are we strong in class 3??

Headley 2019-01-14 19:13:28

In reply to RoyalDad

I believe we are. Just like Stennett, Kerr and Seaton who did well in their first year in class 3 before coming back for a final year, there is a youth named Dushaun Grant who is really class 4 but looks like he may be our best 400m rep in class 3 this year. He had the fastest class 3 time 53.51, at Kirkvine on Saturday.

Taylor.Humble youth. Wish him the best this year.

KC did well this weekend. Seeing some talented athletes along the road to Champs.

No mistaking our hurdlers this year. Should close the gap.

Field athletes as well.

Am I to understand we did not send a contingent to Red Hills?

Headley 2019-01-20 21:33:14

In reply to RoyalDad

C'Bar class 1 is very strong and deep. Taylor, Stevens and Russell with Rusean Young to replace Wilson as sprinters. Class 2 and 3 not so strong.

Farquharson and Vensen are the backbone of their class 1 long distance squad and could win 3 - 4 races between them.

Their class 1 field squad is pretty solid all around too. Apart from Russell they have pretty good hurdlers but no certainty like Russell.

KC sent a very strong class 3 squad to McKinley Wint. The boys represented well in the 1500m and 400m.

The KC squad at GC Foster showed there is good promise in the hurdling and that class 2 and 3 have depth even without showcasing the sprinters. No Shantamoi as yet. Hope he is ok.

Headley 2019-01-21 09:27:23

This could be a turning point.

Inspired by his teammate's run, Plummer came out in a no-nonsense mood in the Class One event, turning back last year's Boys' Champs winner Rovane Williams of Rhodes Hall. He won in an impressive 52.56 seconds to smash the 2016 meet record of 53.53. Williams clocked 54.20 while Excelsior High's Devontie Archer ended third overall in 54.56.

Big up Track and Field Nerdz. They are trying to provide coverage in an area where it's lacking and badly needed. The updates are useful and salutary but the videos need guidance (vertically held cell phone camera for broadcast?) and the writing though enthusiastic is often grammatically and otherwise challenged which I find jarring. Hope they can put it together.

Should also note that T&F Nerdz were first with results of both Central Hurdles and Relays and McKinley Wint. They posted the results 12 hours before JAAA.

RoyalDad 2019-01-22 14:37:20

In reply to Headley

I check their site almost every day. Some very useful info posted.

Jamstar 2019-01-22 15:24:40

Hey guys sorry it took me so long to reply but I will try to touch everything mentioned.

First of on the issue of the videos, as you can see Stride Vision has been streaming the meets live and we have been warned about doing videos and infringing on their rights to broadcast, we however will do videos were no rights can be infringed.

We are mostly a social media entity as such we strive to get the information out there first this of course sometimes affects quality but we will address this as we have pulled from G.C. Foster some bright new faces that will take the world by storm.

As for the writing we are still struggling in this area and I am not happy about this and I am seeking to bring in an editor for this very reason as presently we are falling way behind.

Honestly it is a miracle that we are still functional as at the start of the season all our recording and camera equipment was either stolen or refused to work. I have had to make use with a small cheap camcorder to interview the athletes and this has very limited capabilities an example of this was seen on the weekend as after her race Shaquena Foote agreed to an interview with us and we had to cut the interview as the camcorder went down and subsequent interviews by quality athletes also had to be passed up.

We have written to several corporate enties begging for help ( a sponsorship of 50 thousand Jamaican dollars would fix all our equipment and buy what we need) but so far we have received not a cent.

The site is not generating any capital at this moment and all monies have to come from the pockets of a couple trying youths and some school boys that love track. Honestly if things remain same we may be forced to scale back operations or close things down completely and this would be so unfortunate as when I go to a track meet every single person is on our Facebook page waiting on a result from another meet, even the journalist from established media houses are there because we always have things on lock from multiple meets.

On that note we will be sending one of our young new stars to STETHS this weekend he is a former athlete and aspiring journalist while the full team will be at the Grace Jackson meet, please give us your support.

Jamstar 2019-01-24 18:45:11

Good news guys we got a couple cameras up and working.

We will be doing 3 meets this weekend.

Main team will be in Kingston at Queens Grace Jackson meet while small teams will be sent to St. Elizabeth and St. Ann.

We anticipate getting all the equipment up and worky by Youngster Gold Smith.

Joe if you are out there, why did Anthony Cox leave Jago for York Castle?

That class 3 youth Derrick Grant from Ferncourt is a monster in the 400m and they seem to have a couple more class 3 youngsters. What is Ferncourt doing right?

Shantamoi is in class 1. Rogers is ok. He started training late. He will be ok but he will have the fight of his life.

Rayon Campbell and Jaden Brown in class 2 400mh are looking good and running very good times.

Headley 2019-02-02 21:24:53

In reply to Jamstar

CBar has 2 good long jumpers capable of 1st and 2nd and a very good triple jumper who should win. David Thomas and Lamb are good 110m hurdlers but they certainly cannot beat Vascianna and maybe not Granville (the Jago boys) or the JC boy Sutherland. They will win the shot putt and maybe get a second and win the discus and maybe get another finalist. What other winners or second place finishers do they have in class 2?

RoyalDad 2019-02-03 05:30:56

In reply to Headley

Mullings threw the discus of his life yesterday for KC.

Young Coke blazed the 800 and 1500.

Need to see more of our class 3.

Need Rogers for 2000 and 5000.

Next weekend is Milo I believe. KC usually represent here.

Did not see Stennett or Boo. Do we have anyone notable sprinting in class 1??

Who is this kid from St.Lucia?

Jamstar 2019-02-03 07:02:20

The 2 jumpers from Calabar are Jordan Turner and Luke Brown.

They are actually favorites to win the quenela in the long and triple jump. Turner finished second in the class 2 long jump at Champs on count back while Luke Brown was second in the triple jump. Bo will have a warm time with them.

They also have a high jumper Ottey who finished 4th last year in class 2.

In the throws they have 2 guys who will finished second and third behind Mullins in the shot and discuss.

Calabar has no sprinters in class 2 but they are not weak in class 2.

He will hold off the CBar throwers.

This kid may win both at Champs.

Need to see more of our class 3.
In 2017 I predicted that KC would win or come second in every class 3 race. I was wrong. Bjorn Clarke came 4th in the 400m. This year I am going big. I am predicting that KC will come first or second in every class 3 EVENT.

Need Rogers for 2000 and 5000.
He should be.

Next weekend is Milo I believe. KC usually represent here.
Yes.

Did not see Stennett or Boo. Do we have anyone notable sprinting in class 1??
Stennett did 10.68, the second fastest time in class 2, playing the fool as usual. He has gotten taller and looks in good shape.

Rushaun Rowe came 5th in Class 1 Boys 100m in 2018. He may be in the top 4 this year. He is my dark horse.

Who is this kid from St.Lucia?
Ruben Nichols. Could be 3rd behind Taylor and Watson.

I will bet on my class 3 prediction. Read my initial post. CBar's class 1 is too strong this year but next year they will be 80 percent gone and the days of buying athletes en masse will be over since Jan 2019.

We do not need the hurdlers who ran class 4. We have Grey and Wray whose times are way faster than any other class 3 hurdlers so far. BTW Grey will be back in class 3 next year. I swear he is a six footer.

Class 2 not shabby either.

In reply to RoyalDad

The challenge for KC is that CBar has a super class 1. Their class 1 throw events are very strong and we will hardly get any points here. KC will need to perform well in a number of areas which are presently in the 50 - 70 % range such as the class 1 400mh, triple jump and pole vault, where we have 2 possible finalists in each. These three areas could make all the difference. It will be close.

Taylor will take the 200m and the 400m but I do not expect CBar to be second or third in either race. The 100m is wide open with Ryiem Robinson, Nairne and Sachim Dennis although Stephens and Russell may differ. CBar will have 2 finalists in the 100m but that's as much as I can say.

will be interesting to see how Dennis does. if i remember correctly, his class 2 time last year was a tad faster than Tyreke who won in class 1. Dejour cant handle him, but Stephens can

Purple optimism.

You had to have lived it and experienced it to know what it is all about.

Winning champs for 13 straight years may never get broken, and that history is engraved in the hearts and minds of all students who walk through the gates of North Street and Elletson Road.

If Stevens can handle a fit Sachin Dennis then Ja have replacements for Bolt and I will be happy. Remember Dennis did 10.20 last year in class 2. I suspect once he is fit he will run a little faster this year.

The class one record is 10.12 (Zarnell Hughes) so I am looking forward to the sub 10.20 action. This would place our under 20 boys among the best in the world. Since 2014 (from memory) when we won all the youth and under 20 Boys 100m races we have not been doing so well.

i was there. i remember very well. plus he is a country boy from STETHS so that makes it better. He was faster than the class 1 winner wilson who did 10.21. now keep in mind that the class 1 race was held up for a while, because Stevens wanted to run and is stubborn, and he and Matherson both pulled up.

the winner this year will definitely do sub 10.20.

Amonte Wray and Rajon Grey.

Both will represent KC in class 3 100m hurdles. They will likely be in other sprint events but I am not sure.

Chris Seaton is the 100m and 200m man in class 3. Not sure who will accompany him, maybe Akeem Weir in the 200m.

Weir will be one of the two 400m reps. Dushawn Grant who I mentioned above should be the other.

The new coach from Jago has made a big difference. All of a sudden we have good prospects. KC Graham might have done us a favour. Last year the only points we got from class 1 hurdles was Pinnock's fifth place in the 110mh.

Do not take any bets on this year. Bet the house next year.

Headley 2019-02-23 08:52:36

Harrison as JC Coach

He will produce some good 400m runners. He knows how to challenge 400m runners to go out hard and build confidence. Dashawn Morris was a great project. Bloomfield was obviously more talented but he accepted the challenge and the rest is history in the making.

JC already has a good distance programme and a very good relays coach. I do not know who he is but I have been admiring his work for about 5 years. A JC relay team is a well polished unit with crisp baton changes. Cannot say the same about KC.

Tyrice Taylor 1:51.64 in the Class 1 800m.

1:49 at Champs.

Their class 2 Sprint team though is severely under powered.

Headley 2019-03-03 09:50:03

In reply to Jamstar

That is why I keep saying when the Class 1 stars are gone next year it will be the first real opportunity to beat Cbar since the stars first year in class 1 in 2017.

Tyrice Taylor did 1:51.64 at Central Champs and barely had any competition. He is not a 'tactics' runner. He goes out hard and leads, so Farquharson cannot sit back and wait to outsprint him. Rhoden, Blackman etc are all good but will not go out ridiculously hard like Tyrice.

Are we looking at a sub 1:49 at Champs?

Jamstar 2019-03-03 10:47:36

Farquharson spilt 1:47 at Gibson so if we don't get sub 1:49 I would be disappointed.

In reply to Jamstar

Shaquon Coke jumped 7.75m. at Gibson while Shaqueille Lowe jumped 7.1m AND a fellow named Pinnock jumped 8.14m.

At John Wolmers Lowe ran 10.64 secs in the 100m. So it seems to me that if KC can get Lowe to run a little faster he should concentrate on sprinting and forget jumping AND solve KCs 4x100m relay problem.

Jamstar 2019-03-04 14:28:04

In reply to Headley

Goes without saying

Jamstar 2019-03-04 14:30:59

Rowe ran a Youngster and has not been seen since but he dropped a 10.6 and has 10.45 from the Champs final.

With Rose dropping 10.6 and possibly getting to 10. 5 if KC can get Rowe healthy and add Peart and Pinnock to those 2 then it would be a competent 4x100 team.

Headley 2019-03-04 15:05:08

In reply to Jamstar

Competent is right, moreso because Lowe ran 90 and coasted 10.

At Gibson I was very impressed that Peart was not disconnected on the backstretch by Chris Taylor. Usually by the end of that second leg Taylor has CBar way out front.

archangel 2019-03-04 18:28:06

With three weeks to go to Champs the early call is that Calabar will win Class One, KC will win Class 3 and Class two will be very competitive.
A lot of people believe that KC will dominate Class two but I don’t share that view. St. Jago, JC and others will make this Class wide open.

Class One and Open events carry the most points so Calabar to win Champs with a reduced margin based on last year projection wise.

Injuries and setbacks will make this Champs come down to the last few events to decide it.

Headley 2019-03-06 18:00:13

We are in agreement EXCEPT as RoyalDad noted on your Class 2 assessment.

KC's only weakness in Class 2 is the 110m hurdles. Mr Ransome Edwards who came to KC from Jago this year has worked miracles so far. It is rumoured that Rayon Clarke could take the Class 2 400mh with Brown close behind. Maybe by Champs Mr. Edwards could have Taje Francis (who ran a sub 11 sec 100m at John Wolmers) in the Class 2 110m hurdles finals.

No sir. KC has a strong class 2 but CBar's Class 1 is even stronger and there are lots of open events which class 1 boys can do. It will be closer than last year but I give CBar the edge this year.

Next year when CBars' Class 1 is not so strong and reinforcements cannot be induced easily, I will expect KC to win.

Back to our bread & butter - KC ready to take back hurdles points

"Before I came here, I assessed the overall hurdles programme and I realized that the school scored a single point in the 400m hurdles last year and was not able to win a medal in the sprint hurdles," he said. "I realised that we need to change that so I informed the coaching staff that we needed to use some of our better sprinters and quarter-milers in the events in order for us to do better."

Headley 2019-03-09 10:45:03

Not really.

Most big name athletes from the top boys' schools are only doing one event here. It is really a guide to how the athletes compare in the particular event they are doing here.

For example Revaldo Marshall winning the Boys 1500 Class 1 in 3:56:13 ahead on Venson and Rhoden was surprising. I was expecting Venson first.

I was expecting Rhoden to focus on his stronger race the 800m. As Joe mentioned above he has the potential to do big things. It seems KC wanted to see what Savoury and Ellis would do in the 800m. We will see how they fare against Farquharson later today.

In reply to RoyalDad

Not really. big grin
He did the same thing last year and ran 13.10 at Champs.

Pinnocks' PB is the same as the 13.46 he did today. Maybe he can improve.

Finals
1 Pinnock, Wayne 17 Kingston College 8.10m 2.7 9
8.10m(2.7) PASS PASS PASS

2 Lowe, Shacquille 17 Kingston College 7.75mR 0.7 7
7.75m(0.7) PASS PASS PASS

I believe Pinnock and Lowe only did one jump each today and passed on the other 3. Pinnock had the hurdles and Lowe had the 100m.

The 400m, 800m, hurdles and the jumps results show that the depth of the team is good. Even where we are not in the top 3 we are getting 4th and 5th or 4th and 6th.

If Calabar put a foot wrong they will be dethroned.

Kobe Simpson ran the first leg. I do not know who ran the second. It was not Nichols or Murray. Could have been Richard Martin (edited). It was a poor leg. BTW the JC 3rd leg runner ran the whole leg in lane 2. As a class 1 boy he should be expelled from school. big grin

Rhoden brought KC back in the third leg and Shantamoi ran the last leg.

Jevaughn Powell seems to have injured himself when he fell down after coming second in the 200m. I hope it's not serious. We need him to run the 400m and a leg on the relay.

Still can't get over how well the hurdles group is performing. 70 points from hurdles. We even managed to get 4th and 6th in the Class 2 110mh which is our weakest class for hurdles. Do not be surprised if those class 2 hurdlers improve. They are getting excellent coaching. Wish we had a real relays coach.

Joe I hope your prospect Farr did not hurt himself in the 400mh final. He seemed to land badly after the 3rd hurdle, held his back and stopped running.

Headley 2019-03-17 11:21:22

In reply to RoyalDad

Tyrice Taylor took apart a super 800m field yesterday. It was not pretty. The runner from St. Mary High was the first casualty at 480m. Rivaldo Marshall and Conroy Ellis were taken out of their depth and Marshall who looked so good over the past 3 weeks never recovered, was disengaged by the 500m mark, and stopped running after 550m. Farquharson tried to recover on the backstretch and lost more ground when Reid passed him like a bus at 600m. He stopped at 650m. The JC pair ran a good race to register 3rd and 4th and yet Taylor made them look ordinary. Only Tyrese Reid could hang on at the final bend and stayed with Taylor until the last 50m. Only 5 of the original 8 finished the race. The CBar Distance Squad will not post this video.

800m Race Here

Headley 2019-03-19 10:39:37

The success of Tyrice Taylor and Dashinelle Dyer in Class 1 seems to be suggesting that 3 events that I had bracketed for CBar may now need to be considered as probable. It may not seem like much but those 6-10 points could make a huge difference. I can hardly wait.

Not sure. In the Gleaner today it is being said he may not be fit.

Rodgers Still Doubtful.

In the meantime check out the Gleaner predictions on each event for Champs. The Gleaner is 85 -90 % right. They also have some errors and omissions. For example Raheim Scott in class 3 Boys 400m. Scott is in class 2. They also did not mention Christopher Seaton in the Class 3 Boys 100m although the have him in the long jump. They have no Class 3 Hurdles.

I think Joe will do a better job. He is normally above 90% right and will score the events. I will prepare a spreadsheet with the scores later.

At the start of the season I was saying the strong Cbar class 1 would overcome KC. Now I am saying in light of the expected strong KC performance in the hurdles I am predicting it as KC to top Calabar.

RoyalDad 2019-03-23 15:31:26

KC expected to get massive points in hurdles as opposed to last year. Your note about getting new coach has paid big dividends. I agree with you that this could be the difference maker to KC bringing back the MG Trophy.

Per Ari, you can take their " doubtful" status with a grain of salt, sea salt at that.
