One of Jamaica's top track and field coaches also happens to be a real cricket fan. I remember having a conversation with him after another disappointing day of watching the West Indies at Sabina Park. He made a statement that has stayed with me for years.

He said that cricket was the only sport he knew of where actual competition was harder than training. He said that until we fixed that, West Indies cricket was going to be lagging behind. He didn't watch cricket, or cricket training, outside of the Caribbean, so his utterance must be taken in a West Indian context.

The more I watch and cover cricket in the region, the more I agree with him. In track and field, an athlete preparing for the Olympics in the summer starts his background training in November of the previous year. Footballers regularly play two or more hours on the training field in preparation for a 90-minute game. The top schoolboy teams will start intense training at least two months before competition. In cricket, the average batsman needs to bat two sessions to score a first-class hundred. That is approximately four hours batting.

I have watched cricket training at all levels in the region, and I cannot recall a training session where batsmen are asked to bat four hours. Sometimes a half-hour in the nets is all they do. And then we wonder why regional batsmen struggle to bat for long periods.

Quite right Orville.

T20 mentality been instilled into young cricketers, in the Yardie team, we are hard-press to find a batsman who values his wicket and willing to bat solidly for several overs. Case in point, only the non-Yardie Fuda kept the first innings going and except for a rare innings from Walton, the rest of the batsmen seem to be in a T20 mode.

haven't i not said this time and time again, cricketers must train every day, you compete successfully if you don't, our cricketers go to tour after tour with the same flaws

Is anyone surprised?

Professional contracts are being handed out and the performances are getting worse.

How many days a week are these guys on contracts training?
What training facilities are available to them?
Do they have strength & conditioning programs to follow?

Some English County sides travel to the Caribbean for pre-season, what are the Caribbean sides doing, having trial matches a few months after the draft.

If T20 is their mode of thinking, I think they still at a loss. Cause no selector even for a T20 team would pick you if you still don't have a proper temperament and skill level. Not staying out in the middle long enough is causing them man to short change themselves.
Cause look you see many of them get picked then dropped causebthey are found out quite easily. Some the better T20, players are decent one day players.

The Scorpion batting is simple worrisome, at regional level they are under performing. Campbell is within sight of a WI call up and instead of sending a friendly reminder to selectors with a century or two, he is getting out cheaply against a bowling that not quite up to par. Seems like Yardie batsmen all have no interest in playing test or 4 day cricket, its either T20 or nothing.

This really is not news.

Coach after coach has tried to address the issue.

Allyuh Windians run dem away because players complained. The pettier and sillier ones referred to a West indian coach as Coach Uglyman because he dared to address it.

I agree with most your statement, but the fact the horse done bolt.
It bolt with the older ones. these young guys can still be trained.
Most them know they can never play another sport, be successful with no half-horse training.

For years it has been evident that our young men do not train hard enough in our cricket. When our men are being paid to play for the pride and prestige of our nations and do not leave their whole effort in preparation and on the playing field...something is way wrong beyond administration. Something is wrong with our culture and society.

Our Jamaican athletes have the same level of gifts as our cricketers. but, our Jamaican athlete generally works far harder.

I agree about needing proper temparement and skill level to be selected for any format of the game. But staying out in the middle long enough is NOT a requirement for T20 selection.

Otherwise, The Dot Brothers would be prime candidates for an IPL or BOL contract.

So hold on.

The current “Windies” Test team contains ZERO of the players alllyuh label CANCERS and PRIMA DONNAS.

You know...the ones Allyuh call mercenary, greedy, disloyal, selfish, money hungry, lazy, ill disciplined etc. The ones Allyuh say doh like to train, disrespectful to coaches and management, don’t play regional 4 day competition so that the youngsters could learn from them etc.

Allyuh call dem all kinda ting. So none of them in Allyuh West Indies team now

The “good” West Indies team is now full of committed, loyal, disciplined, well read, hard working players.

How is it even possible that this group of current “Windies” players don’t train hard enough?

They’re supposed to be everything the “cancers” and “prima donnas” are not.

And is not like they learn anything from those cancerous ones. They don’t play regional cricket remember?

There must be a mistake.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
