Bassarath defends Jan’s hiring

PRESIDENT of the TT Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath has told CNC3 there was no improprierty in the appointment of Imran Jan as assistant coach of the TT Red Force.

Bassarath said Jan’s appointment, in October 2017, was a collective decision by the entire executive of the board, and owing to his extensive experience.

According to a CNC3 report last night, a PriceWaterHouseCoopers audit revealed former Sport Company director Jan attempted to approve funding for the TTCB beyond his limit.

Jan was appointed assistant coach for the Red Force in October 2017. The audit report said Jan leaked confidential SporTT documents to Bassarath which revealed the amount of money the TTCB would receive from SporTT. Jan was fired from SporTT in November 2017 shortly after the completion of a forensic audit.

TTCB in search of answers
After consecutive defeats to start the season…

THE TT Cricket Board (TTCB) said it will be looking for answers as to why the Red Force continue to perform poorly in the West Indies Four-Day Championships, saying in-depth analysis needs to take place and it must be done quickly.

After finishing last in the 2017/2018 four-day tournament, the Red Force have lost back-to-back matches to start the 2018/2019 campaign on the wrong foot.

Red Force lost by 76 runs to the Windward Islands Volcanoes in its opening match, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, before falling to a crushing 245-run defeat to Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the same venue.

TTCB Chief Operations Officer (COO) Dudnath Ramkessoon said questions need to be asked after the performance of the team in the last match.

"To be dismissed yesterday (Monday) for under 100, one has to question why the players not really settling down and batting – because it is really the batting that is letting us down a bit," Ramkessoon said.

Wallace calls for new management

Former West Indies opening batsman Philo Wallace said that the entire management and backroom staff team should be reviewed following the Red Force team's embarrassing loss against the Leewards Islands Hurricane in the West Indies Four-day Championship match at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, San Fernando on Monday.

The Hurricanes defeated T&T Red Force by 246 runs, the hosts sixth successive defeat since last season. An irate Wallace who was commentating on the match for Cricket360 said: “This display is diabolical and embarrassing for the people of T&T. I have been here for the last four days looking at the game and I have been here commentating since last season and seeing their very poor performances. When I played against T&T back in the day the team was a fighting team. A team that was respected in the Caribbean and now it pains me to see what it has become.”
