ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) A plethora of Test hopefuls will have their chance to impress selectors when they line-up in two two-day matches for Cricket West Indies President's XI against touring England starting next week.
Batsman Sunil Ambris is the only player in the current Test squad included in the 12-man unit being led by Jahmar Hamilton, and will be feeling the pressure of expectation after two underwhelming series.
He managed only 68 runs in two Tests against India last October and 73 runs in another two-Test rubber against Bangladesh a month later.
Ambris averages 15 from six Tests.
He is one of six players in the squad with Test experience with the likes of batsmen Jermaine Blackwood and Vishaul Singh, all-rounder Raymon Reifer and fast bowlers Miguel Cummins and Alzarri Joseph all named.
Blackwood has not played a Test in 15 months, but remains in the selection frame, while Vishaul played the last of his three Tests nearly two years ago and has also remained on the lips of selectors with prolific scoring in the domestic first class competition last season.

Ambris among 6 seeking a place on Test Team
Admin sorry about the long read but its an interesting article and shares some of the views of some fans here on the board.
My take is that this cannot be interpreted as an audition for WI test team selection based on previous President XI teams. Performance does not necessarily guarantee WI test selection but it does give the player a favourable impression in the minds of selectors, assuming they are paying attention.
Team selection will be interesting, lets see if any recent non-performers will be selected. No need to mention names.

We're going to need a spinner on these Caribbean pitches, surely....
If English batsmen have a weakness, it's against spin, which they don't see enough of in the wet, seaming conditions in county cricket.
Let's not forget that even an innocuous spinner such as Warrican ran through the Lions when they came to the Caribbean about a year ago.

Wheres the love for Keemo? His game is getting better and better.
In reply to runout
My love for West Indies cricket is greater than my love for Keemo. AlJo brings the heat!!!!
Keemo will be in the test team as a bowling all-rounder soon.
In reply to Dukes
Same here bro. But I like Keemo
In reply to runout
I like Keemo too. His time will come and he will do well. Right now I think AlJo could shake up the English top order along with the Angel.
In reply to Dukes
Gotta watch the new action. Will it compromise his pace?
5 bowlers?
In reply to Dukes
What about
Lil B?
In reply to Dukes
I would compose my side a little different:
1.Kraigg Brathwaite

6. Shane Dowrich
7. Jason Holder
8. Aljo
9. Kemar Roach
10. O.Thomas
11.Shannon Gabriel
Play another specialist bat. Chase is batting too high at 4
In reply to Dukes
Got to bring back Darren Bravo. He will find form. I wouldn't be too worried about him not scoring in the one first class game or being rusty on the sub continent
In reply to natty_forever
Only difference is Oshane vs AlJo.
I am still skeptical about Oshane's fitness and his second and third spell pace.
In reply to jballer84
Lil B needs to earn his way back into the team. If he just walks back into the team he will underperform. He needs to be hungry
In reply to jballer84
I would include Darren at 3
In reply to Dukes
Darren Bravo must be in the test team. Still the best batsman in the caribbean just a little rusty at the moment.
In reply to Dukes well we tolerated the Angel for awhile, and I feel OT is better. I think it is a risk we can take, especially with 5 bowlers.

Kraigg ? he shouldnt be guaranteed a position
In reply to Seechy
i will go for 4 Quicks including JaHo and one spinner, good keeper (one who can bat is a plus) and 5 specialist bats (such as there may be any in the West Indies at this time). We need to concentrate on bowling out teams. That is the only way that our underwhelming batting can gain any confidence.
WI needs Bravo's experience but we also need an opener who could assist the spin for I suspect that WI will be going with a battery of fast bowlers, Joseph, Oshane, Gabriel, Roach, Cummins, maybe even Leveridge.

You want Bajans boycott again?
Surprised at the lack of love for Bishoo
As mikesiva suggested, if he doesnt get selected in the starting XI, they may well rue that decision
Chase is a decent stop gap spinner. A front line spinner he is not.
That said, Jason Holder IS Captain so playing Bishoo in that case would just be for night watchman duties

I liked Hemraj's batting in the four days version. He should be Kraigg's partner at the top instead of Powell.
My reason for not including Powell is because he doesn't have a good track record in test matches against England. In the six test matches,12 innings, he played against them, Anderson took his wicket five times, Broad three and Stokes once.
I would like to see Keemo Paul in this first test. He could give you an extended batting lineup in case Anderson and Broad takes out the top and middle order cheaply, Dowrich, Holder, and Paul could stop them from running through us.
That #3 pitch is always a batsman wicket from day 1 to 4. If Jason won the toss, he should bat first.
You don't want to bat last on that wicket. (reliable source)

Let Chubbo stay in the muddland, I go with the baseball player one more time, and include Darren at 3, take out Ambris.
Justice for Bramble!!!
In reply to natty_forever
If Cornwall is in the training squad? Cause seems like there might be a training squad and still the prez 11 along with the ongoing 4 day tourney. I guess we'll see if Cornwall or others are absent for their next round of matches.
I too feel Cornwall should be in the test side.
You'll get useful overs from him, no pot of runs from the ball as he adjusts his lines quickly and is a thinking bowler, and still knows how to bat.
But we still have to see what the selectors do.
In reply to Larr Pullo
he needs to stay away from those plantains

Why is no one playing our frontline spinner Bishoo?? He has a good record at the Mecca.
We are the first group to blame the selectors, complaining every time a team is selected.
Why is there an A and B team?
We continue to ignore players after a year's performance, even if they performed on these tours.
Vishual Singh is now put out to pasture by this MB selectors, ignoring his performance on previous A team tours/
Cornwall continues to perform at the regional and A team level, yet very few mention his name.
Brooks is among the top three in runs and stats, not one year, but the last 4 years, and was the top batsman on the England Lions.
Here is The President's selectees, the selectors continue to work with players.
A number of performers from the A teams, will be included in the training squad, to play against England.
In reply to natty_forever
No genuine spinner ....
Pace like fire won't take England down.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
What about
Lil B?
He needs to play some more four-day regional cricket - not pick and choose when he could play and expect to walk back into this team, no sirree.
Entitlement will not be tolerated
