Ganga: Too much self-serving cricket officials
Ex-national captain ready for TTCB elections

FORMER national cricketer and TT Cricket Board (TTCB) member Daren Ganga has declared he wants to bring change to the board, ahead of the January 16 elections. Ganga said he is advocating for transparency and accountability in the TTCB. While remaining vague on which role he’ll be going up for, he said the elections aren’t about positions but philosophies and policies.

Ganga said, “I want to make it categorically clear, my focus and the focus of other people who support the philosophy we’ve put forward of a one club one vote (is for) democracy, transparency, good governance... that is what we focus on. We focus on making sure that developing cricket and cricketers (are) our highest priority.

With the Red Force’s poor performances continuing in the four-day format and a recent audit by ex-sponsor NGC pointing to irregularities, Ganga said these were red flags to factor in the elections. Despite the courts ruling in favour of the TTCB’s current governing set-up and overall legislation, Ganga said it wasn’t a loss because awareness and scrutiny fell on the board’s “archaic” mindset of operations.

He revealed Windies legend Brian Lara was also ready to aid the revival of TT cricket. “There are guys who are willing to help. Brian Lara has spoken to me and indicated he’s willing to assist [...]; why is the ultimate legend of the game not involved in our game, either at a regional level or a national level in some sort of sustainable manner? You can’t continue to serve the game without engaging persons who’ve been there, who’ve done that, and persons who are most recent in the game -- understanding where the game is at at this point in that and making sure they can translate that to the young players.” Ganga said.

Audit into SporTT points at collusion

An extended investigation by accounting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has revealed alleged collusion between former Sportt Company Director Imran Jan and current T&T Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath.

The forensic investigation examined dozens of unauthorised recordings between Jan, Bassarath, the then TTCB Chief Executive Officer, Suruj Ragoonath, and president of the Monroe Road Sports Club, Manohar Ramsaran.

More than 3,000 recordings were found on Jan’s company issued phone after he was terminated from the SporTT Company in November 2017. Project Barcelona is part of a broader investigation into procurement and expenditure irregularities at the SporTT Company which saw the termination of several more employees in July 2018.

The first key finding regarding the suspicious voice recordings was that Jan “appeared to have been attempting to influence the provision of SporTT funding to TTCB.” However, the report indicated that former chairman of the SporTT Company, Dinanath Ramnarine “was preventing the distribution of funding to TTCB.”

PWC’s report noted that Jan attempted to approve payments to the TTCB by signing approval documents “on three (3) separate occasions” for over quarter million dollars—a sum he did not have authority to approve. However, the payments never manufactured because it didn’t get the required approval from the then chairman.

In October 2017, Jan was appointed assistant coach of the T&T Red Force team. Text messages between Jan and Bassarath appear to suggest it was a reward for his efforts to influence funding to the TTCB. PWC’s report noted reference was made by Bassarath to moving Jan “to the front of the line.”

The news comes one week before the TTCB’s elections, which are due to take place on January 16.

After election...what?

“A penchant for negative reporting and sensationalism has assumed the profile of an insidious campaign with the fourth estate being not unjustly accused of being embedded in the camp of the self-styled agitators pursuing the overthrow of the legally constituted cricket board.”

Like Azim Bassarath, who at the time of writing this yesterday afternoon has no challenger for the position of president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, so many of us seem to believe an election, any election, is a watershed moment necessitating the rhetoric he invoked in a media release on Friday to confirm his candidacy for re-election.

I’m in full agreement with Ganga’s comments. It’s time to break a failing status quo and revive the sport with good new faces and policies that would help develop the sport and players in T&T and the region. There are strong minded personnel’s/ex-players like Lara, Ganga, Bishop, Badree who have the knowledge, ability and experience to enhance the sport. I look forward to such a change.
