He scored 104 off 112 balls with only 5 fours and 2 sixes. That means he scored 72 runs off 105 balls without boundaries. That is a scoring rate of 68 without boundaries.
That is astonishing.
I am unaware of any other great batsman who is capable of doing that. What that means is, he has to take less risks hitting fours and sixes if he can score at greater than 4 an over without boundaries.

Larr and I were at Sabina Park and we witnessed Devon score a great 100 against England. Larr can not get that innings out of his head.
I did not get over that innings until about 4-5 years ago, so be patient with him.

Even though many of the modern greats had the unique ability to pierce the field with placement (I rate Lara better than all the others), Virat's ability to run,converts 1s to 2s and 2s to 3s is astounding. As AssoLarr noted (he does make sense on occasions), conditions haven't changed too much since the 90s and early 2000s and comparisons between the modern greats across eras is NOT an outlandish exercise. Virat combines many text book shots,exceptional ability to place,using his supreme fitness to run the 1s and 2s and extraordinary awareness of match situations in producing these remarkable knocks.

Kohli has forced his way to the top of the current crop, no doubt, and the right to have his name called with the past greats. He is the ultimate run machine and soon references to Bradman may have to be to the second best batsman ever.

Careful, some "experts" may interpret that as meaning he is unable to reliably hit boundaries without taking needless risk.

I am glad I stayed up all night to watch this batting and run chase clinic.
Shows how to score runs without necessarily hitting boundaries. Played easily, except for hustling like crazy to convert ones into twos and some threes. Thought he would have killed that Rayadu guy at times for his slowness.
Dhoni scored his 50 with just one boundary (a six). In the last over he did hit another one. So he ran for almost all of his runs, plus Kohli's runs. Then Ramdin forced the pace (of running) further. Dhoni was game but I was afraid he could have dropped dead.
That's how some previously healthy folks without heart problems collapse in that brutal heat, with dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, arrhythmia, etc.

I saw Viv in England in 1976 and in 1980.In 1980 at Lords he was so devastating that Trevor Bailey said that watching him bat reminded him of when he was a 12 year old boy bowling to one of his masters in school.I remember Viv at Old Trafford in 1980,when he decided to take on Bob Willis.He refused to run any singles and stayed at the end that Willis was bowling and kept hitting him for boundaries.He hit Willis for 13 boundaries and Willis ended up with 14 overs for 99 runs.Remember Bob Willis was quick and took 325 test wickets when that was a very high number.

Viv was something else and the air of expectation around the ground was quite evident when he walked to the crease...Saw him make a hundred against India in 1983. First ball forward defensive push for four off Venkat.. Viv was a supreme timer.
