Nope Grapeseed

I didn't want them giving Butch 5 plus Billion
to destroy No Man's Land, a pristine, environmentally sensitive areas of Tobago. The decision by Sandals to withdraw is a positive one for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The billions of dollars that would have been spent can now be invested in Tobago for job creation, health care, education, crime fighting and social services.

Maybe we should start at the genesis of this project. The track record of the tourism industry in T&T, particularly Tobago, is abysmal even though we have a ministry of tourism and now two state companies involved

Plus other tax incentives for 200 poorly paid servants jobs.

razz razz razz

Gov't gets Sandals beating from Opposition

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is rejecting the reasons given by Sandals for its decision to no longer pursue its project in Tobago.

She called the “bad publicity” reason absurd.

In a statement hours after the Sandals decision was announced on Tuesday, Persad-Bissessar said the withdrawal came as no surprise.

“ Repeatedly, the Rowley Government has fallen flat on its face on its flagship projects/game changers. The Government is failing in every sector and on every project, and, the decision by Sandals to “withdraw” from Tobago highlights, again,

the Government’s incompetence to deliver any significant project to date, the fifth month of their fourth year in office.

Throughout the Sandals saga, the Government withheld information from the public, refused to answer the simplest questions and failed to garner public support for the project. They embarked on a PR campaign to vilify various stakeholders, including environmentalists, which left many wondering whether the Government was working for Sandals or the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

The position presented during today’s press conference that Sandals withdrew based on negative publicity is bordering on absurd, and it is yet another attempt by the Government to deflect attention from their incompetence. Perhaps, following the recent lecture by the Prime Minister, Sandals chose to do as he instructed and “Mind their business.”

This project was mired in controversy even before this Rowley-led Government took office, as Dr Rowley improperly held talks with the owners of Sandals while he was Opposition Leader and struck a deal. Sandals was always one of Rowley’s whims and never a well thought out development project.

Duke: Thank you Butch Stewart
Praises Sandals for walking away

“Thank you Butch Stewart, thank you!”

This was how Watson Duke, Minority Leader of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), responded to Sandals announcement today that it has pulled out of a deal with Government for a resort in Tobago.

“Thank you Mr. CEO (Sandals CEO Gebhard Rainer), thank you Butch Stewart (Sandals founder), is my reaction to that. Tobago says thanks for pulling out and for saving our wetlands, from turning our people on the island into bell boys and bell girls and water fetchers. It’s a good sign and we say thanks to them for doing that,” Duke said in a recorded statement.

He insisted that he did not want Sandals to “walk away” from Tobago, but wanted the resort chain to wait for a “real Government” and “real THA to take up office before it proceeded with negotiations.

Sandals Resorts says it will vigorously defend its good name

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – Sandals Resorts International (SRI) says it reserves the right to initiate all legal options, including suing for slander and libel to protect its good name as the war of words continues with the Antigua and Barbuda government

The row between the Gaston Brown government and SRI began last year when the two were engaged in a public exchange over Sandals’ retention of sales tax income under what St John’s called “an unlawful agreement”.

Sandals collects an Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) from its customers and, according to Prime Minister Browne, keeps 65 per cent of the yields.

On July 14, Sandals informed the Antigua government that it would close the 380-room Sandals Grand hotel for three months from September 20 to December 17 for essential maintenance work.

But Browne claimed that SRI’s decision to close the hotel was sabotage and an “act of hostility” designed to win tax concessions from the government.
