HEADLINE: West Indies select Gayle & Pooran for first two ODIs against England in Barbados

CaribbeanCricket.com 2019-02-07 07:03:28

GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia – Chris Gayle will make a return to WINDIES colours, while Nicholas Pooran has earned his maiden call-up in the 50-over format as CWI Selection Panel named the 14-member squad for the first and second One-Day Internationals against England.

The 39-year-old Gayle is the second most capped WINDIES player with 284 matches in his illustrious career. He is also the second leading runscorer with 9,727 runs in behind Brian Lara with 10,405 runs in 299 appearances. Gayle also has 165 wickets (average 35.3) with his clever off-spin bowling. The experienced left-hander has the most centuries by a West Indian in this format – 23 – as well as the highest score – 215 against Zimbabwe in the ICC Cricket World Cup four years ago.

Pooran is a 23-year-old left-hander who can also keep wicket. He has so far played eight T20 Internationals with a strike rate of 152.57 and a highest score of 53 not outChairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne said the upcoming five-match series is a vital part of the preparations for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup – to be played in England and Wales from May 31 to July 15. He explained that experienced batsman Marlon Samuels is unavailable due to treatment on a knee injury.
“As we continue our Cricket World Cup preparations, the upcoming series against the top ranked ODI side is a great opportunity for us to gauge where we are as a team. This allows us to identify any areas that need addressing relating to selection and also helps the coaching staff to fine tune their game strategy,” Browne said.

“We welcome the return of Chris Gayle who missed the last two series and Ashley Nurse from injury. We are pleased to introduce Nicholas Pooran to the ODI cricket for the first time. He is clearly a young player with undoubted talent and we believe he can add value to our middle order. Shannon Gabriel remains very much in our World Cup plans but with a heavy workload expected in the Test series he will be considered for selection later in the ODI series.”

The matches will be played at Kensington Oval on Wednesday, February 20 and Friday, February 22.

I like your XI with KP or FA subbing for each other based on the wicket.

Seechy 2019-02-07 08:07:58

Pacy's XI is a bowler short seeing as Rovman doesn't really bowl. Shame Joseph misses out. Allen has not taken a wicket in 4 ODIs and has a List a ave of 55 - why the hell is he in the squad?? Nurse and Keemo would sub for each other, depending on the wicket. Here is the best XI for the build up to the World Cup:

1. Chris Gayle
2. Evin Lewis
3. Shai Hope (wk)
4. Shimron Hetmyer
5. Darren Bravo
6. Nicholas Pooran
7. Jason Holder (c)
8. Keemo Paul
9. Devendra Bishoo
10.Kemar Roach
11.Oshane Thomas

We gats bare left handers in dat top 6 cool

I agree... Rovman and Chris Gayle had to bowl the 10 which is a tough ask but adding Bishoo / Nurse weakens the team.

I wish we had Chase in the Squad. I would have selected him ahead of one of the openers

Yamfoot 2019-02-07 08:37:20

Rovman bowls for Jamaica

natty_forever 2019-02-07 09:29:48

Chris going need to bowl.

Sylobeauty 2019-02-07 09:51:28

Nothing personal against anyone because I feel is a good team. However, I know they preparing Daren Bravo for the WC but I would leave him out for now just to ease him from the pressure he is under now. Definitely I want him in the WC. Bishoo? OMG I don't what they see in him. I would not even pick him on a Guyana team

anthonyp 2019-02-07 09:58:37

Seiously they pick Bishoo? lol

Most likely this gonna be the XI

1. Lewis
2. Gayle
3. Shai
4. Hety
5. Bravo
6. Powell
7. Holder
8. Nurse
9. Keemo
10. Roach
11. Thomas

If it was up to me Pooran will play ahead of Powell and Allen ahead of Nurse

natty_forever 2019-02-07 09:59:25

In reply to anthonyp… Powell can give you a few overs.

anthonyp 2019-02-07 10:41:50

In reply to natty_forever

Gayle could give you the overs.. Pooran too talented to sit on the bench

VoopsandOut 2019-02-07 11:10:48

i am sorry that Blackwood did not get a second look. Didn't he open for West Indies A last year in the One Days and performed OK? Would still be nice to have him around the team. I think that our batting is about all we could want in the squad but the bowling is a concern. I really don't see Bishoo in that mix at all. I would have gone for Raheeeeeeeeeemmmm

analyst-kid 2019-02-07 12:41:35

The recent problem with the WI is whereas we have an aging superstar in Gayle and developing one day specialist bats in Lewis Hope and Hetmyer, we dont have no ODI specialist bowlers and the top teams can chase down whatever score we put up.

Roach and Holder are just adequate while Paul and Oshane are learning. Adherrance to line and length would make for an emerging bowling power.

Nurse is your best ODI bowler and Cornwall would have made the attack more potent if you leave out one of the quartet.

natty_forever 2019-02-07 12:43:10

In reply to VoopsandOut… then tell him (Blackwood) to dominate at the FC level.

Saw Springer give away his wicket recently, even though Ashley Nurse spoke to him about the upcoming Lunch interval about 3 balls before. It was most irresponsible. No doubt he has talent but he should be a little more seasoned and patient before he is promoted.

Unfortunately, I think you're right.

I forking hate to see Nurse batting 8 though, he's not a good enough batsman, I think Roach or Thomas need to sit for Pooran, and unfortunately at this stage, it's Oshane for me.

Gayle and Powell combined are the 5th bowler.

And with Bravo and Hope in the middle, Pooran on the bench and Nurse 8, we'll struggle to score 300 consistently, dunno how long it's gonna take them to see this, this lineup (minus Bravo, but replacing Samuels with him may be like for like) has been failing with bat and ball against all comers for the past 18 months, but yet they persist!!!

goliath 2019-02-08 03:26:06

This should be the team for the 1st ODI

Chris Gayle,
Evin Lewis,
Shimron Hetmyer,
Shai Hope,
Nicholas Pooran,
Rovman Powell,
Jason Holder (C),
Keemo Paul,
Ashley Nurse,
Oshane Thomas,
Fabian Allen, Devendra Bishoo, or Kemar Roach, ...Aljo or the Angel should also be in this team ahead of all of these 3

Darren Bravo sits or plays ahead of Rovman Powell...both of these sit when the icon returns

What are you smoking bro about Allen. Have you realized that Allen has quietly become the go to bowler to break partnerships? Check the records, plus somehow batsmen have difficulties scoring big against him.

Dukes 2019-02-08 10:25:14

In reply to Slipfeeler

Please justify ALLEN in our ODI team?

He has done nothing in List A games having a single half-century against the USA team and averages almost 5 runs per over having never taken 3 wickets in an innings so why has he been promoted.

PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!

DIEHARD 2019-02-10 00:26:38

In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com

All the batsmen in the squad should play in the final XI, but I know WI more likely to keep Pooran on the bench to play the extra bowler

Gayle
Lewis
Hope
Hetmyer
Pooran
Bravo
Powell
Holder
Paul
Nurse
Roach
