Windies vs England, 1st ODI at Kensington Oval
In reply to Narper
Yes Naps...looking forward to this series.I wanna see progress
In reply to Raggs
Crunch time.
We will get an idea where we are.
England is ranked #1 in ICC ODI ranking....we are #9.
I am confident we can beat England....especially as we are coming off a test series win.
In reply to Narper
You aint beating a dog shite. Even a year ago you were bragging of WHOOPISS revival.
WHOOPISS are going to be humiliated and I predict the score of 500+ by England in this series. WHOOPISS are going to be stomped brutally.
In reply to Narper
As long as its ckmpetitive.. and ghere is skme progress. I.e. Not just Hope and Hetymar.
I expect WI to seriously test the Pommies. And they will need everyone to contribute if they are to win.
Alright which posters are at the game today?
Evin Lewis' injury means there may be less to worry about at the other end at the start of the innings but his absence also highlights that further personnel swaps are to be expected when a World Cup squad has to be submitted.
In reply to Narper
I would tek a 3-2 defeat but a whitewash ain't on my dinner plate.
Possessing a dangerous batting line-up, Morgan and Co. are the favourites to win this 5-match series. In fact, they are also one of the top contenders to lift the coveted trophy in the multi-nation competition, which will take place in their own backyard. They have won 15 of their last 20 series/tournaments, since their debacle in 2015.
In reply to Raggs
A whitewash would be a few steps backwards...even though I know test cricket and ODIs are different....but I believe our boys will have some more self belief going into this series...I expect Galye to play a major role...even if he does not dominate in all matches.
CricInfo:
And how are all the Barbys (or is it Barbies) doing this morning?
West Indies won the toss and will bat.
In reply to jaba
Roach injured. Back spasms or stress fracture?
What are England's chances?
They are currently ranked as the No.1 men's ODI team by the ICC and are being tipped by many as the favourites for the upcoming World Cup.
They have not lost a multiple-match ODI series since the start of 2017 when they were beaten 2-1 away to India. Since then, they have won nine series, which included beating the West Indies 4-0 at home in 2017.
What about the West Indies?
An injury to Evin Lewis means that opening batsman John Campbell, whose free-spirited hitting at the top of the order during the Test series turned heads, is also in line to make his ODI debut.
How can I follow it?
Viewers in India will be able to watch the match on SonyESPN.

Lots of Brits at the stadium today.

Is that an upgrade from sitting on the fence?
Just asking...
Gayle is on strike.
Woakes will open the attack
0.6
Woakes to John Campbell, FOUR, John Campbell gets off the mark in ODI cricket with a good-looking boundary. Woakes hurled it full, wasn't a half-volley, Campbell came half-forward and offered a straight bat to ease it wide of mid-off. Just a mere push and he beat the man at mid-off to his left. The timing was spot on and the ball raced away
Will Gayle get Wood or give wood.

Woakes to John Campbell, FOUR, streaky! Woakes has his hands on the head. It was so close to the stumps. A pacy length ball around the fourth stump line and Campbell brings down his bat at an angle belatedly. Gets a thick inside edge that eludes the leg-stump and runs away to fine leg

That was a super shot.
4.6
Woakes to John Campbell, FOUR, shot! Woakes overpitches and Campbell takes heavy toll of it. With limited feet movement and a slightly crouched stance, the left-hander drills it between the bowler and the non-striker. No need to run for those
4.3
Woakes to John Campbell, FOUR, sees the width outside off and flashes his bat hard at it. The ball bounced a bit more than Campbell expected it to and the ball flew off the edge. Over vacant second slip and it hurried to the third man fence

Woakes to John Campbell, out Caught by Moeen Ali!! Would you believe it? Campbell has picked the man in the deep. Slower ball from a short of length, Campbell spotted that and pulled it away after fetching it from outside off. He didn't go hard at it and ended up spooning it to deep square leg. Moeen Ali ran in to complete a pretty straightforward catch. That's a soft dismissal. England have the breakthrough and Woakes is pumped up.

Mark Wood to Shai Hope, FOUR, to deep mid-wicket another eye-pleasing shot from Hope. In-angler from Wood and Hope uses his wrists to good effect. Relies on timing and whips it over wide mid-on. One bounce and into the fence
9.3
Mark Wood to Shai Hope, FOUR, that's a glorious stroke! Overpitched around off and Hope shows the maker's name and doesn't over-hit. The perfect straight drive that roll away all along the carpet
Wood to Hope, FOUR runs, full and driven, just a checked shot using the bowler's pace, all timing down the ground and that'll be Hope's first boundary!

Gayle does not look comfortable against Ali.
11.3
Plunkett to Gayle, 1 run, dropped! Jason Roy is the culprit. It was in the air for a long while, the fielder ran back and got to it, but failed to hold onto it. It was a slower shortish ball and Gayle went for the pull shot. Ended up slicing it off the top-edge and Roy went back and left. Morgan too ran across from cover, but didn't get close to Roy. That was surely catchable

Moeen Ali to Gayle, SIX, that's more like Gayle! Uses his feet, gets to the pitch of the ball and hoists this floated delivery over long-on.
Run rate about 5 per over is very good at this stage of the innings. Gayle should and will not feel pressured to score quickly.

I have one foot in the air. 111/1
Can put it down now. 112/1
20.3
Moeen Ali to Gayle, no run, oh, he's just about recovered in time, is he? Yes but sharp work from Buttler. Ali pulled his length back and fired it quick just outside off on seeing the batsman advance. Gayle wasn't to the pitch and did well not to overcommitt himself there. Drags his back leg back safely. It was referred to the third umpire and it was confirmed on replays that Gayle was safe there
22.3
Moeen Ali to Gayle, FOUR, phew! Gayle's hit it so hard that Bairstow, who was at deep mid-wicket for a second thought that he had a chance but that just flew past him in a jiffy. Floater on off, Gayle gets low and smacks it across the line. Flat and so powerful that Bairtsow flings to his right and it eluded him to bounce in front of the ropes
WI 119/1 (23.0 Ovs) CRR: 5.17
Moeen done 8ov. 1 wicket down at the halfway stage.
With all these lefties in the top 6 it could be a bad day for Rashid.

25.3
Stokes to Gayle, FOUR, now, it's the turn of Gayle to raise his bat. 50th fifty for the Universe Boss in ODIs and he's made England pay for that drop catch. Gentle wave of the bat to soak in all the applauses. It was full and wide of off, Gayle cleverly used the pace and steered it with an open-bat. The third man fielder was slightly squarer and had no chance
26.2
Plunkett to Gayle, SIX, my word! This is massive from Gayle. Plunkett errs and bowls it right in the arc for Gayle, who clears his front leg and absolutely smokes it with brute force over mid-wicket. In fact, he's launched it out of the ground
In reply to Drapsey
Leave Ali alone is not a test match.

The ball - short and wide, carved away square of the wicket and he just ambles across for a single
Very well played Chris.

34.3
Woakes to Hetmyer, out Caught by Roy! Hetmyer departs, and I hope this isn't a signature 21st century Windies collapse! They're known to do this - accelerate, or attempt to do so, at the wrong time. Banged in on a back of a length, a tad wide, Hetmyer charges down and clubs it flat and cross-batted towards Roy at mid-off who isn't going to drop this one - not after dropping Gayle, who has gone on to add 91 more since then.

Time for a word with Windies centurion, Chris Gayle: "It's one of my best innings, you check my career and I haven't started like that. But it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Hopefully put us in a good position.
Used a bit of experience, knew which bowlers to target, the new-ball bowlers bowled well. Campbell, Shai Hope took the pressure off me, which was fantastic. It's a good wicket, the new ball is going to be key for us. [Celebration?]
Raise the Windies flag high, since it's my last home series, keep the flag high and make sure everyone gets a chance to see that. Getting a few cramps, hopefully get back on the park and get a win. [Winning score?] Confident, any particular day a team will take 360, but we can't relax or take it for granted. We're playing the No1 team so we have to get the ball in the right areas and take our chances in the field."
425 needed to beat england....this total is way short. sorry to say.
The batsmen have done their job.
Now is the turn of the bowlers.
Hey Holder learning a ting.......Bishoo to open
England openers don't seem troubled, they're off to a quality start
lol 8 fours in first 6 overs. not good
With this run rate by England we were 100 runs short.
Holder is the man!
Bairstow out....
Cricinfo gaan crazy, they say CB bowled 2 balls and Bishoo returns.
Corrected now.
I've heard worse...

Gayle's 39-year old body creaking in the field....

Oxenford saw something behind the line?
We need ODI bowlers
In reply to Narper
Nurse dropped Root off Thomas.
These dropped catches are going to hurt us.
I really cant cope with this bowling. Is this really our best?
IS this the worst fielding display by an International team???
In reply to crapaud
maybe if our fielders took some catches....
In reply to runout
England need 98 runs in 84 balls

In reply to jaba
Nurse dropped Root twice.
Pooran dropped one also
plus we were lousy in fielding.
vibhash: "333/3 in 44.4 overs. Interesting." Very!

JE Root 96 (93b)

They dropped catches about 6, I think
What went wrong? I could not watch the England innings
dropped 6 chances
gave away a ton of runs by mis-fielding
Wi bowling is weaker than a dead fish
England batting is STRONG like a lion
#1 team vs #8 (or #9?) team, etc, etc
In reply to RemainsUnknown
Quite frankly, I am not surprised. The bowling always appeared weak on paper and generally we have no bench strength.
In reply to RemainsUnknown
We were lousy and England couldn't put a real beating on us
they need 48 plus overs to beat us..
So on our worst day, we gave them batting practice
All is not lost.....

Holder to Root, 1 wide, sliding past the pads ... scores level

Holder to Root, OUT, waist-high full toss, and slapped to deep midwicket! That could be curtains for Root, but it could be a no-ball on height ... it's a very close call ... hip height, but dipping ... not sufficient evidence to call it, so Root is on his way!
JE Root c Pooran b Holder 102 (97b 9x4 0x6) SR: 105.15
Root shakes his head as he departs, but that was a clinical performance from one of England's outstanding cricketers. He's broken the back of an extraordinarily steep chase
england chased it down with singles
48.4

Holder to Buttler, FOUR runs, dipping into the toes, clipped to the midwicket fence!
Out comes Buttler with a fairly routine requirement
360/8
England
364/4 (48.4/50 ov, target 361)
England won by 6 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)
In reply to sgtdjones
WI 360/8 (50.0 Ovs)
ENG 364/4 (48.4 Ovs)
England won by 6 wkts
Jason Roy set the platform with a blistering 65-ball century, before Root and Eoin Morgan dived into the meat of the chase. It takes quite something to steal the thunder from a Chris Gayle masterpiece, but ultimately, the accumulation of a world-record 23 sixes couldn't atone for their lack of intent between the wickets. England find the boundaries and sprint the singles at will, and that made all the difference
In reply to sgtdjones
Now back
In reply to Narper
We played lousy and lost 121 dot balls???
Dropped catches, poor bowling, lousy fielding Pooran, Holder etc didn't bat well
But it still took the Pommies over 48 overs to win
"We didn't have a great day in the field and we'll like to improve that going forward. I'd like to think we are improving constantly as we go along, which is a good place to be going into the World Cup."
7.22pm Time for some presentations. Here's Jason Holder: "At the halfway stage we felt we were in the game, but didn't bowl as well as we'd have liked and didn't help ourselves in the field."
"Credit to Chris, he's been a stalwart for us. But we need to pull our socks up. Our energy and body language wasn't up to scratch, and the bowlers need to create more opportunities.
