BRANDON KING REVISITED

BRANDON KING REVISITED!

TONEY BECCA'S TAKE BELOW

"Two seasons ago, on a Sunday at Sabina Park, he took on a Jamaica Defence Force team with their three fast bowlers, including Sheldon Cottrell and Reynard Leveridge, and he gave them a proper caning.

He was hit on the head by Cottrell early in the innings before he stood tall and played a real masterpiece of an innings.

Kingston needed quick runs to try and win the Senior Cup after trailing on first innings, and he went at the bowling.

He went to bat at 15 for one, he scored 92 with six sixes and five fours, he was dismissed at 167 for two, and the fans, on either side, were thrilled by his composure at the wickets, and by his stroke play.

It was a classy innings. He demonstrated the stuff of which great batsmen are made. He destroyed the bowlers, including the spin bowler, with lovely, fluent drives, some of them ending in the stands behind the boundary at long-off and long-on.

King, on that day, and many days after, in the Senior Cup season and in this year's Trial matches, during which he made the most runs, including a brilliant century, showed his class.

His technique is good, and pleasing to the eye. His style is good, he has the stamp of a future West Indies batsman, and he should be treated as such.

He has not really demanded a place on the national team because he has not dominated the scene, but he has performed and he is not the first not to have dominated the scene and then move on to dominate the level above, and he will not be the last.

For those who do not know, or who may have forgotten, King scored 438 runs with one century and an average of 43.06 in the 2014 Senior Cup season, he scored 247 runs and one century and an average of 24.76 in the 2015 Senior Cup season, and he scored 647 runs, three centuries with a top score of 179 and an average of 71.89 in the past season.

In the past three Senior Cup seasons, he has scored 1,335 runs, he has scored five centuries with a top score of 179, and he has averaged 51.14.

On top of that, his runs, his number of centuries, his top score, and his average for the recent season were far above every other player.

In the three Trial matches a few weeks ago, King scored 223 runs, he had a top score of 155, and finished with an average of 74.33, all above his contemporaries.

He has class and that should be obvious to the selectors. He deserves a run, no question about that. The fans know it, and so should the selectors."

Pity Tony did not live to see him ascend to the highest level.

I was first introduced to King via this article.

granite 2019-03-17 16:51:16

King looks the business,he was at ease against Gabriel and Phillips who I must admit is quite another good fast bowler coming out of Trinidad,Angel did bowl very fast too.King must find a place in the Windies team,he looks so much more mature than his age.

camos 2019-03-17 17:20:58

jacksprat 2019-03-17 18:10:42

Always had time for King.

Disappointed in his not kicking on with a couple of his half centuries this season.

Easy on the eye

He is a poor man's Kane Williamson. Has all the shots and time to play, HOWEVER, he must curb his indiscipline that leads to him chasing balls best left alone. This has been evident not just in this match where they were going after the T'dad score.

Throughout this season he was the victim of a few ridiculous LBW decisions.

I am drawing no comparison but as I recall Yagga Rowe had scored multiple FC and test centuries before he had scored his first Senior Cup century.

Even with Yagga failing to convert his many Senior Cup half centuries no one we questioned his undeniable class.

King's centuries will inevitably come as long as he keeps performing consistently. Class cannot be taught nor denied for long.

Not sure why you are speaking about centuries in response to me. I never questioned his ability to score triple figures, I only talked about his habit of chasing loose deliveries.

He is the best Jamaican batting talent I have seen in a while.

Brandon King is the real deal, and worth any investment by CWI.

Thanks for the correction.

Brandon King has the goods to go on to greater things.

And I trust, that if and when he is selected, he will be euqally indulged and given as long a runsas the other "Special One" - Shai Hope!

Brandon just need to work on his concentration . He must learn to set his sight on big scores every time he bats .His tendency to give his wicket away after good starts is his main weakness.

jacksprat 2019-03-20 16:56:28

In reply to cricketmad

Agreed!

The same problem seem to afflict John Campbell as well.

I didn't see too many bouncers bowled at King. It would be interesting to see how he handles the short ball.

I have known him since he was born - his dad and mom are my friends - he and a few others adored Lara and went to cricket from they were very young. They'd borrow some of my cricket books too. He always wanted to play cricket.
He is a lovely young man - warm and 'mannersable'. I have a lot of time for him and am delighted with his progress..

He is the best batsman I have seen of the entire lot over the last 10 years,if Hetmyer could play Test cricket then surely King isn't far off.I really did like how he played Phillips and Gabriel with ease,he was never ruffled by spin or pace.

XDFIX 2019-03-20 22:08:45

In reply to Chrissy

Yeah, Toney Becca held him in high esteem, as do many local cricket pundits!

He is the best batter right now in Jamaica's cricket setup.

Hopefully, he moves on to great things!

natty_forever 2019-03-21 15:30:25

A little Campion Boy. A think there is a least one more that should be playing. But no Man Sighn for him.
