Yuh mean the JCA couldn't hire a real bus to transport players back then?

Imagine all dem grown men packed together like sardines in that minibus, all the way to Montego Bay.

WIPA would've had them for dinner.

camos 2019-03-18 13:09:25

In reply to Drapsey

that was before the quarter million bus came in. Do you remember R Austin making a 50+ against JSA, may have been Elvyn Cup?

Drapsey 2019-03-18 13:14:32

In reply to camos

No, but I saw him play Rankine Cup (Shippers) while still a schoolboy at STATHS. That was the real deal, but ...

was this the year Michael Holding first played for Ja or it was '76?

jacksprat 2019-03-18 14:55:31

Michael Holding first played for Jamaica around 1973 while he was still student at Kingston College High School.

By '76 he was already in his second & third series for West Indies.

In reply to Drapsey What are you talking about mini-bus? Wasn't there a story about Mattis playing for Jamaica, and on one of the mornings of the game,he is seen on East Kings House Rd at a JOS bus stop trying to get to Sabina Park?.Mattis I think lived in Barbican.(I cant vouch for the veracity of the story).Alleged that a motorist going to the game saw him and recognized him and gave him a lift to Sabina.

I also had a friend who was invited for trials. He gets a telegram.' Report to Sabina Park, Saturday.....10.00 am'.After coming all the way from St.Mary by public transport (he did not drive),he gets to Sabina Park, the transport has already left, and there are no travel arrangements for him.The trial game is being held at UWI Mona,so my friend now has to find his way to UWI.And this was not an isolated instance.

alfa1975 2019-03-19 01:40:54

In reply to Yamfoot I went to that game at Jarrett Park.Went down on Friday night watched Saturday and Sunday and back to Kingston. And continued to go there until the game against Barbados in 1977 during which Holding messed up his shoulder.
Sabina Park, moreso George Headley Stand was under construction.

The Mattis story is that he was at the bus stop trying to get home from Sabina Park after being the overnight not out batsman. Maurice Foster gave him a ride home.

I have the good fortune to play golf with Fos every Saturday morning....that story is true.

By the way....he has a million stories about his days in Jamaica and West Indies cricket....and tells them with great humour big grin big grin

One of my favourites:

The Jamaica team had just arrived in Barbados for a Shell Shield match. The players were collecting their luggage when Arthur Barrett (R.I.P.) approached Skipper Foster and Renford Pinnock to tell them that he could not find his suitcase.

Pinnock:, who had seen Barrett with his suitcase when they checked in,: "Arthur, is it a red suitcase?"
Barrett: "Yes Pinny...a red one!"
Pinnock: "With a with a piece of blue cloth on the handle?"
Barrett: "Yes Pinny....same one!"
Pinnock: "Bwoy, sorry man, I haven't seen it either"

Foster says it was the only time in his life that he ever heard Barrett, normally a mild-mannered guy, curse.

Those guys are (were) all 'characters'.

Pinnock used to come to JSA for football matches. (Remember, camos?). Man was a laugh a minute. I recall him saying that we made better drinks than football players.

Also met Foster when he represented ZEP Chemicals in some capacity. He shared a lot of stories.

I lived in Spanish Town for a time after graduation (Ensom City) we would go to Prison Oval in the evenings ,Pinnock was there at times coaching some women.

alfa1975 2019-03-19 12:46:52

In reply to newdread I flew with Fos from Kingston to Curacao on ALM and he regaled us with similar stories.
There one about a former Melbourne player selected in the Jamaica team as a batsman. When his turn to bat comes around, he is so nervous ,he starts walking out to bat- He forgot to put on his pads!!!!

Yes Foster did leave ZEP and formed his own chemical company. I remember seeing him bat at a memorial match at Melbourne Club. Seniors against youngsters. Yaga Rowe was also playing. Foster as a senior was so comfortable at the wicket, they could not get him out. big grin big grin big grin
