Growing up in the Caribbean you couldn't get enough of the outdoors! So many games to play with your friends but so little time and nothing was more sad than the setting sun.
Time to go inside.
But not without being forced to. So much so that parents had to create deterrents in order to ensure children would not linger out in the dark.
In Barbados:
The Heart man was a murderous pedophile who took out the hearts of children at night.
I have no idea what the Steel Donkey did but when you heard the chains on the ground it was time to run inside.
The three wheeled hearse needs no explanation.
Fast forward to today and children do not know what it is like to see the sun set. Maybe parents need to come up with stories of naughty children who did not go outside to play.
Tell them if they do not go outside once a day they will grow up to be the coach of the West Indies Cricket team.

And be forced to coach them to run singles, bowl googlies, and post in the Rum Shop.

I lack creativity. Could you come up with something terrifying to children to make them go outside? No so easy with Google.

How about telling them to get their asses outside?

yes inside is the new thing, online video games, instant messaging and video chat have turned the world outside in. Kids are more anti-social than ever, cant carry a proper conversation and have the attention span of a mosquito.
Blame FB and others, but its the new norm the world over.

If that was effective black then why did parents create the stories in the first place?

Maybe games like Pokemon Go can begin to reverse the trend - if kids are exploring outside (even with a gadget) it's better than lounging on the couch?

Stop treating the kids like they are your friends. Set time for them to play video games and time for them to go outside and play.

Absolutely. Companies need to make a concerted effort to get kids up and moving again and parents need to be more forceful. Kids are not our friends.
