The build-up starts....

Double Olympic 100m champion Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce looked in immaculate condition as she easily won the women's 100m in a meet record of 11.20 (0.6 mps) following her usual bullet start at the third staging of the Grenada Invitational last night in St George's.

Fraser-Pryce was quickest out of the blocks and cruised home ahead of her compatriot Jonelle Smith, who closed well for second in 11.35 with American Aliyah Brown third with 11.46, the same time as Jamaica's Gayon Evans in fourth.

The big match-up of the meet never materialised as Jamaica's rising star Akeem Bloomfield pulled up at the top of the straight in the 200m as did Amrican Olympic champion Justin Gatlin. The race was won by Great Britain's Miguel Francis of Racers Track club in a world-leading 20.16. Canadian star Andre degrasse was second in 20.20 with Kyle Greaux of Trinidad and Tobago third in 20.51.

Earlier, Jamaica's Asafa Powell was absent from the Men's 100m A race which was won by Adam Gemili of Great Britain in 10.10 (0.4 mps) just outside his personal best of 9.97. Aaron Brown of Canada was second in 10.13, with Christopher Belcher of the USA third in 10.14. The Jamaicans were down the track with Nesta Carter fifth in 10.26, Nigel Ellis (10.31) in sixth, Tyquendo Tracey in seventh with 10.32 and Julian Forte eighth in 10.35.

THIS year's edition of the Jamaica International Invitational meet, (JII), which was set for this Saturday, May 4, has been cancelled due to the lack of funding, said the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) in a press release yesterday.

The JII meet, which is an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Challenge calendar event, started in 2004 with a yearly budget of approximately US$1.35m (J$180m).

On a different level, Jamaicans Matherson, Ewers, Waseem Williams and Chambers all running in NCAA east champs.

Janeek Brown is just dominant in women's 100 H, and she is just a Sophomore. Ran a 12.55 recently.

Natalliah Whyte holding her own too it seems.

I guess we will have to wai until WC in Sep Oct to see who can challenge Michael Norman.

I was hoping that Ja could challenge USA in the 4x4000m relay but that will not happen any time soon. We will be challenging T&T.

You're right sah,

Norman is an excellent talent, and the US is just too strong again with Kerley and company assisting.

Bloomfield,Allen and...…? Mc ran a decent leg at World relays, but he's just not consistent. Gaye has to step up. Who else is there?

Like you said,we'll tackle the Trinidadians.

Women 100m is most interesting to me on Thursday. Hobbs is the current American young sensation but finally will get to see how she run against some of the world best in an individual 100m. Also I want to see how Ta Lou begin her season and also Dina Asher Smith is the fastest for the season thus far, plus the Olympic Champion Thompson in the race. So it should be a really good fast one

With all due respect, the track is blazing fast. That 10.75 on paper is great. The real world is waiting as Hobbs is finding out.

I would bet Shelly's 10.88 and Elaine's 10.89 against that 10.75 any day...until otherwise shown different.

Don't be bias in favour of your own athletes. That same 'fast' track many athletes including Hobbs in the past could NOT run 10.75 so that says a lot about Richardson who pulled it off. She broke a 30 year record with that 10.75. Furthermore you have to respect that her 10.75 is significantly faster than SAFP 10.88 regardless of what track it took place

Duke

With all due respect, the track is blazing fast. That 10.75 on paper is great. The real world is waiting as Hobbs is finding out.

I guess M. Norman and R. Benjamin are also waiting for the world to find out. Both were recent NCAA young sprinters.

Hobbs was the best at that time but was never in Richardson time zone. Young lady have been walking down senior athletes all season. If she stays on course she will be one to watch for the changing of the guard.

I am watching the highlights of the Paavo Nurmi games in Finland this morning.

Men's javelin

Thomas Rohler of Germany 86.33
Kishorn Walcott of TT 86.09

In the meantime, Janeek Brown (Jca) won the 100m hurdles at the NCAA in 12.40! Wow....

Sharika Barnett faded badly to third in the women's 400m final.

For UK viewers the Oslo Diamond league meet will be live on eurosport starting at about 7pm UK time.

Frederick Dacres of Jamaica threw a world-leading, Diamond League record, meet record, personal best and national record of 70.78 to win the men's discus at the Rabat Diamond League. He finished ahead of Sweden's Daniel Stahl (69.94) and Austrian Lukas Weisshaidinger (68.14).

Jamaican Omar McLeod was leading the 110m hurdles, when he hit the final hurdle and tumbled to finish fifth in 13.48 behind winner Sergei Shubenkov (13.12).

Tyrone Smith of Bermuda finished ninth in the men's long jump with 7.49.

I believe McLeod has automatically qualified for WC in Doha in September. He may not need to be in Ja this weekend. I would love to see him at trials with Levy, Parchment and Thomas.

Men's 400m hurdles

1) Rai Benjamin (US/Antigua) 47.16
2) Kyron McMaster (BVI) 48.94

Caster Semenya (RSA) won the women's 800m in 1:55.70, with Natoya Goule (Jca) fifth in 1:59.82.

Women's shot putt

1) Gong (China) 19.79
2) Danielle Thomas-Dodd (Jca) 19.26

110m hurdles

1) Orlando Ortega (Spain/Cuba) 13.24
2) Belocian (France) 13.29
3) Omar McLeod (Jca) 13.29
4) Ronald Levy (Jca) 13.30

Women's 100m

1) MJ Ta Lou (CIV) 11.02
2) Aleia Hobbs (US) 11.04
3) Teahna Daniels (US) 11.13
4) Sha'Carri Richardson (US) 11.15
5) Michelle-Lee Ahye (TT) 11.23
6) English Gardner (US) 11.24
7) Torri Bowie (US) 11.30
cool Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jca) 11.39

More questions than answers with this race...Ta Lou announced that she intends to medal at the World Champs. Richardson discovers it's a bit harder with the big women than with the students. Bowie is still a long way off her best. Steve Cram suggested that SAFP was tired from doubling at the Trials a week ago, but if that's the case, does she still have the stamina to do the rounds at the World Champs?

More later....

Thanks, bro. I watched the replays of the sprints. Looked like either SAFP was taking it light or she experienced some small niggle. Okagbare looked great in the 200m. I am sure Elaine will get better. Richardson seemed tight and nervous before the race but she is only 19. She gotta know this is big woman race and gotta come prepared.

mikesiva 2019-07-03 08:01:26

Just catching up with more replays...I've been so busy this week!

Women's 200m

1) Blessing Okagbare (Nigeria) 22.05
2) Elaine Thompson (Jca) 22.21
3) Dina Asher-Smith (GB) 22.42

I'm more encouraged by ET's performance here. Coming off a gruelling Trials, she came second, beating DAS, Schippers and Naser. Augurs well for the future.

Men's 400m

1) Michael Norman (US) 44.62
2) Kahmari Montgomery (US) 45.12
3) Fred Kerley (US) 45.33
4) Jonathan Jones (Bdos) 45.46
5) Wilbert London (US) 45.57
6) Machel Cedenio (TT) 46.71
7) Bralon Taplin (Grenada) 46.94

What happened to Cedenio? Is he just a relay runner?

Men's 100m

1) Christian Coleman (US) 9.81
2) Justin Gatlin (US) 9.87
3) Zharnel Hughes (GB) 9.97

Always good to see Gatlin getting beaten. However, the only real challengers to Coleman this season are Lyles and de Grasse, and neither were there, so not much in this race. Where is Ronnie Baker?

Third is a good finish for Ricketts, because Ibarguen and Rojas are so far ahead of the field in the women's triple jump. Povea is looking like a serious contender too, so I commend Ricketts on her third place finish. You should be a little more concerned about the limited number of Trinidadians in the Diamond League this year. Like why isn't Keshorn Walcott taking part in the men's javelin?
cool
There was total chaos in the men's 400m. A blatant false-start by Montgomery, followed by Jonathan Jones (Bdos) and Zambrono of Ecuador running 200m flat out, because they didn't hear the recall gun. The race was restarted, without an exhausted Jones and Zambrono, but with Montgomery.

1) Steven Gardiner (Bah) 44.51

Women's high jump

Natoya ran one of her best races to date.

Danielle needs to get that form right. Too much moving in latter part of race. Kendra took over then.

Janeek may have been nervous, but this is the big leagues.

Elaine pull a Shelly. Not taking anything from Shaunae. She's one tough cookie. Superior athlete.

Janieve and Rushell. Time to improve for September. Sydney is on top of her game. One to beat.

Field athletes held their own. Also time to peak.

That's a lot of Jamaicans.

rudebway 2019-07-13 14:24:05

In reply to RoyalDad

Shaunae is a boss. I think she will do the 400 at the WC. this is speed work. no Felix, but she will have her hands full with Naser and the other lady who came out of the wood works a few weeks ago.

i am pretty sure Russell didnt make the 400 H team. i think she was fourth or 5th at the trials so this is just Diamond league money.

Elaine had two olympic gold medals... end of story. Protect the Achilles until the WC.

mikesiva 2019-07-13 14:36:28

In reply to rudebway

Yes, it's no shame losing to Shaunae Miller-Uibo...she's outstanding over the 200m and the 400m. The saving grace is that SMU has to choose one - the Doha schedule doesn't allow her to do both. Here's hoping she chooses the 400m!

Women's 200m

1) Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bah) 22.09
2) Elaine Thompson (Jca) 22.44
3) Dafne Schippers (Neth) 22.45

Did you know that SMU belongs to the On Track Management team, run by Jamaican Claude Bryan?

Sifan Hassan (Neth) broke the world record in the women's mile in a time of 4:12.33!

The men's 100m is a bit underwhelming now. Lyles is so inconsistent, and if Gatlin is still winning when he's way short of his best, well....

Men's 100m

1) Justin Gatlin (US) 9.91
2) Noah Lyles (US) 9.92

i did not. And my bet is she is doing the 400.

on other matters, have you or Royal dad or anyone heard anything regarding Christiana Williams or Odean Skeen? they seem to have fallen off the face of the earth

RoyalDad 2019-07-13 23:31:41

Have not heard anything on both. Ja's hands now rest in one Oblique Seville...whenever he arrives. Blake is still not where he needs to be, and don't know if he ever will get there. That injury was bad. Skeen was about to break out...it seems.

Christania too will have her hands full. The competition now is outrageous among the women. Not even the US can boast of such depth. Anyone knows the status of Ashanti Moore??

Rushell was the winner of the 400H at Ja trials. Somewhat of a surprise. Janieve not following through with such potential.

Headwind was -1.7 for both men and women 100. Regardless, the women look very weak. Even Gardner surprised the pack. Hobbs was terrible. As for young Richardson, was her leaving

college early a catastrophic mistake? She finished last. Same can be said about young Kaylin Whitney. She too came out right after high school and has been struggling ever since. She has now moved to the 400.

Felix has some work to do. Similar to Shelly. Give her some time.

while others on here were getting carried away, i believe some folks here were cautioning that the pros with the big women is a completely different matter. But oh well.

Felix is in lane 3 for the finals today.. she is a boss, and she will be able to see her competition. i hope she makes it in the top 3

in regards to the 4 *4, do remember that Chrisann pulled up at trials. Hopefully she is back for next year. Roneisha Mcgregor finished ahead of Christine Day at the trials, so i assume they will give her a leg. Hopefully she continues to improve

The women are poised to do very well in the 4 x 400. Enough to beat US?? Our top three are better or on par. We have to find the 4th. James ran a bang up leg at the World relays. Can she repeat or do better?. Too bad on Chris.

Yes, the "problem" has now resurfaced and is quiet about Richardson now, focusing instead on Lyles.

100m hurdles final

Kendra Harrison 12.44
Nia Ali 12.55
Brianna McNeal 12.61

Will we see Harrison vs Williams?

Men's 400m final

Fred Kerley 43.64
Michael Norman 43.79
Nathan Strother 44.29

Men's 400m hurdles final

Rai Benjamin 47.23
TJ Holmes 48.58

Richardson failed to advance in the women's 200m. Bowie gave the 200m a miss too, focusing on the long jump. Bowie is defending champion in the 100m so goes straight into World Championships for that event.

Today's finals

Women's 400m hurdles
110m hurdles
Both 200m

As for Janeek Brown. This I will say. Don't think she is a flash in the pan because she was improving her times over the course of the college season, unlike Richardson. But I need to see her more and should if she tackles the Diamond league. As of right now, Kendra is the only one who can beat Williams come Doha. Her form is impeccable and she's fast.

Muhammad is the Olympic champion, and yet all the hype on the Diamond league circuit is about Mclaughlin. This was a good way for Muhammad to remind everyone including Mclaughlin that she's not going to hand over her crown without a fight.

Checked but did not see anything. She left college right after NCAA then went to Ja trials. Haven't seen her on track since. Maybe next Diamond League in England she will show.

We will know for sure if she is for real when that happens.

Janeek....welcome to the big leagues. I think Tapper should try the 100.

Shelly..what can you say. Think this was a training session. Shaunae tough as heck still. Superior talent.

Bloomfield.Good things. What happen to Allen???

Jonielle have to move forward. Get it going man.

rudebway 2019-08-18 18:57:30

i really liked Shelly's run. She was in the lead at about 180. Shaunae Miller is a special talent. Shelly is working on her endurance to hold off Elaine and Bowie.

In regards to the men, dont know if there is some loophole then can use to put Bloomfield in the 400 relay at a minimum. He ran the 200 at trials and bombed.

Glad that Yohan held on for the win though he tightened up towards the end.

mikesiva 2019-08-19 09:33:14

In reply to nitro

Coleman pulled out last minute. Suspected injury. Casts a shadow over his performance in the World Champs. With the men's 100m going through a lull, medals are up for grabs if Coleman isn't fit.

Lyles didn't run the 100m at the US trials, and will focus on the 200m. Reece Prescod's injury ruled him out for the rest of the season. So who are the contenders for gold in the 100m?

An ageing Justin Gatlin? A returning Yohan Blake? Who else?

I would like Miguel Francis to do well but I can't see anyone beating Lyles. Except injury. Michael Norman could've done it, but he only ran the 400m at the US Champs, so he won't be in the 200m at the World Champs.

Shaunae miller Uibo confirmed she's only running the 400m at the World championships. So, the women's 200m is up for grabs.

Apart from Bloomfield, yes we're slacking badly. Allen has been up and down, so too Gaye. They need an outside intervention.....meaning they should look elsewhere
for training if they have not.

Did you see young Taylor's race in Belgium?? Not bad for a 1st race since champs. These are our four. Bloomfield, Allen, Gaye and Taylor. Donkey man not cutting it, and rest of field need cutting. Where is Bann and Glassesman??

There was this youngster named Glove in the 100.Nineteen years old. Did not qualify. Know who he is??

Jamstar 2019-08-20 04:48:52

Bloomfield too hard ears, Allen had early injuries and has been struggling to stay fit since May need to call it a season. Chris management insist he won't run at world's no matter what. Glave is a youngster based in England with Jamaican roots, he was at out junior trials last year but didn't make it though he looked very good in the rounds.
