HEADLINE: Floyd Reifer takes over from Richard Pybus as West Indies interim coach

CaribbeanCricket.com 2019-04-11 20:35:20

Floyd Reifer has been unveiled as West Indies' new interim head coach, replacing Richard Pybus with immediate effect, with Robert Haynes taking over from Courtney Browne as the new chairman of selectors.

The changes were announced at a press conference by Ricky Skerritt, the new president of CWI, who recently defeated the previous incumbent, Dave Cameron, in the board elections.

The appointments came as part of Skerritt's commitment to what he described as a "Cricket First" mantra, his bid to draw a line under a controversial period for West Indies cricket and pave the way for the return of a number of former West Indies star players who, he said, had been "secretly, but actively, victimised" by the previous regime, and "banished … from selection consideration".

"We have found it necessary to immediately adjust our selection policy to become more open, inclusive and player-centric," Skerritt said. "The changes we have triggered this week are more than a change in personnel or a shake-up in the ranks. This is a calculated strategic move designed to reignite the passion for a culture, where our cricket is being put back where it belongs - at the very centre."

Reifer, who comes from Barbados, played six Tests, eight ODIs and one T20I for West Indies between 1997 and 2009, when he returned to the side after more than a decade's absence to lead a depleted team against Bangladesh, following a strike by several of the region's senior players.

Two very good moves that will sure give our cricket a boost. Both gentlemen have been very good servants of West Indies cricket and I have no doubt they will continue to serve WI cricket well. Congrats to all

Great moves Mr Prez and more importantly your rationale for these changes,"pave the way for the return of a number of former West Indies star players who, he said, had been "secretly, but actively, victimised" by the previous regime, and "banished … from selection consideration"
Finally we got rid of ugly Browne and his ugly, insular selections, good riddance.

Slippy is just painting with a broad brush (if I may use the expression) knowing that Bajans are reputed to be ugliest of West Indians.

Big hardback men of Caribbean origin making fun of someone's physical appearance like little children is a common thing. Sometimes I wonder if Donald Trump is a West Indian smile But at least the press in the US call out Trump's juvenile behavior on a consistent basis.

The irony of it all is that some of those who make physical jokes about people of African descent are quick to say things like massa day dun and call others mental slaves when their concept of beauty is exactly the same as "massa". But seriously, you should ignore those types of posts in the future because infants will be infants.

An inferior complex has serious consequences and play on the mind on shallow people.

The word "ugly"was used metaphorically, as evidenced by my inclusion in the sentence, "ugly selection". It had nothing to do with the man's physical appearance but his mis-guided selection policies.

I would like to know the basis for choosing Reifer as head coach. The above credential is pathetic at most.... Can he command the respect of the senior players???!!!!

I see it is not okay to use demeaning generalizations about Jamaicans but ones about Bajans are comedic.

I never understood why grown men would go that low and trash talk about one's physical appearance by calling that person ugly. And it seems to be strange that the two in question - Gibson and now Browne - are Bajan.

What is also weird is the logic that we got rid of insular Bajan Browne and selected another Bajan. Go figure.

The word "ugly"was used metaphorically

Then this sentence is poor constructed. Truthfully I think it was worded as intended.

Reifer is the coach for the World Cup. That’s a fact. Just wish him the best and hope he doesn’t repeat the results the last time he lead a West Indies team at an ICC World Cup

Why are you Bajans so sensitive?

Looks like you guys are exhibiting symptoms of that other stigma labeled on Bajan men.
