Did his Jamaican fans poison him and his talent because he was more talented than them or he was just a druggie from birth? In my mind he could have been one of the worlds greatest all rounder!

Question about Danny Germs Austin?
In reply to WestDem
I got the impression that he and Herbert Chang starTed Drugs because of the backlash of the SA rebel tour
In reply to Jumpstart
I interviewed Austin for radio in the mid-1990s, and he was very eloquent when talking about the recent Test series loss to Australia. But when I broached his rebel tour of South Africa, he went to pieces and became incoherent and rambling. It's clear that the backlash to the rebel tour of SA affected him in so many ways.
In reply to mikesiva
Yeah. That's what I heard too.

Yes! but the two of you have to be smart enough to recognize that this is a reply by WestDem filled with nationalistic degradation and racist overtones to a genuine question asked by solidrock. To post well thought out responses give this thread more credence than it deserves. In my next reply I will give WestDem the response he deserves.

WestDem Fack you

There was a story about Austin having some kind of run-in with his captain Clive Lloyd on his first engagement with the West Indies (or the Kerry Packer troop). I think it was a case of him having weed in his luggage.
When 'challenged' by Lloyd, he shook it off as "Just a likkle weed, man", to paraphrase.
That incident was way before the SA Rebel tour.

You are a phucking asshole asking that stupid question.
Life can really be funny. When numerous threads are started to diss my homies, I will return such with interest... not seeing allyuh calling those that called Hoops a goat, eff allyuh too!

You just cant stay quiet on Easter huh?
Gotta start fights.
In reply to WestDem
To be call the GOAT in sports is the highest compliment an athlete can get considering what it means.
In reply to JamMack
You are still an idiot! Go do what you are not good at and maybe, just maybe you can get outta normal zone and into the smarter one! Darn!
In reply to methodic
Sorry. I didn't know. Should have known by the name. Anyways, really unfortunate what happened to those guys. But they should have never gone there. No price on dignity and respect. They could have waited for county contracts. West Indies players were the #1 players in demand in the circuit
In reply to WestDem
I hope he is doing well.

Reminder that the man represented Jamaica at the international level in two sports... football and cricket..
As a cricketer... the man opened the batting. He played a sheet anchor role or attacked on other occasions... depended on the situation. Bowled decent medium pace and off-spin..
In football, he was a creative forward.
Talent for days...Sad that he was unable to maximize its use
For the Americans... Austin pre-dated Vincent "Bo" Jackson and Deion "Primetime" Sanders

Austin lived in Mona Heights. It seems to me that mental illness ran in the family since his brother aka Treasure had serious psychiatric problems.
And yes he was a multi-talented athlete who had lots of support from good people even after he sold out for rand.

When did Germs play football for Jamaica ?
I remember him playing Major League football for Arnett Garden at the same time he played Shell Shield cricket for Jamaica but was not aware he played football at the national representative level.
He was also a fantastic table tennis player and also dabbled in track and field.
In reply to jacksprat
I don't recall him playing football for Jamaica either. He was also a good wicket keeper.
You are correct!
He was a poor man's Garry Sobers - opening bats/wicketkeeper/off spinner/medium pacer in cricket plus his prowess at several other sports.
Question for Jamaicans familiar with schoolboy sports on the Island in the seventies...
Of the following who were truly gifted with exceptional multi-sport abilities, who seemed to be the best all-around?
1. Richard Danny Germs Austin (cricket, table tennis, football)
2. Herbert Dago Gordon (cricket, football)
3. Jeffrey Mordecai (cricket, football, field hockey)
I choose Mordecai because he seemed to be the most consistent winner in all sports he took part in. Of course, after winning everything in high school, he continued to be a winner academically and did not play sports as steadily as he could have nationally. [I am a bit clouded in my judgment being a Wolmerian. WE simply did not know how to lose at most sports in the seventies. It was a mindset even when we had a weaker team]
Maybe, I should ask also of the three mentioned above who was the best wicket-keeper/batsman?
In reply to solidrock
Hebert Dago Gordon - Football, Cricket, Table Tennis
(He was a more accomplished footballer than either and many rated him a better wicket keeper than Mordecai and at least the equal of Austin as a batsman)
Peter (Dove) Marston - National Representative in both football & cricket (U19)
Bancroft Gordon - National Representative Football, Basketball, Hockey - Academic Scholarship to Harvard University
Maurice Foster - National Representative Table Tennis, Cricket, Golf
JK Holt - National Representative Football, Cricket.
Lloyd (Respic) Morgan - National Representative Football, cricket
