I say we can hardly do so?
We have to develop a capacity to think cricket.

Can West Indians play cricket when we have to think?
See spooning ball and hit spooning ball. Why are we wasting our brain cells?
In reply to Courtesy
So, are you saying that the Lloyd/Richards team of 1975-95 couldn't think?
In reply to mikesiva
Why do you think we lost the ODI final against India in 1983?
Just a lil' thought was needed then.
In reply to Courtesy
So, all those wins up to 1983 were accomplished with a lack of brains?
And two decades of dominance in Test cricket...no brains?
Did Mark Nicholas get hold of your login password?
In reply to mikesiva
We have gradually developed a reputation for swinging. Ask the Indian commies. It's the Africa thing.
They see it as not lack of brains...lack of thought and as a result lack of skillful execution.
See how Russel does not have to think and now hitting sixes.
"...muscle, power and brutality..." according to Harsha Bhogle. No brain needed.
In reply to Courtesy
Nah man, we have had some very astute folks with cricketing brains and common sense.
Even Russell knows his strength and timing which makes him think that if he connects or even mishits, it will be six or four.
Why jook jook or poke around?
\
People just highlight his power which who God bless, no man cuss. But he hits well, unlike a redheaded newcomer "superstar" who can only pop it up.
Takes a lot of savvy on the part of Russell, Lloyd evn Gayle. But people here mad, mad when Gayle played himself in first before blasting off during last odi series.
Power is like the big penis myth. A few might have it and flaunt it but don't have a clue how to use it. That's brute force and ignorance. But some will pat it, stroke it, play themselves in and score centuries all the time by using the top head.
Power (in hitting) is a great asset not to ignore.
In reply to goofballs
I learnt this very early in life that a big bat is not the end all. You must know when to stroke it, take it to tongue for shopping (use your head) and at the right time, jook the platform that has been laid before you to ensure you score runs in both innings.
In reply to Courtesy
Nice follow up/elaboration of the issue.
In reply to goofballs
Credit to you. You laid a wonderful platform.
In reply to Courtesy
I don't share.
In reply to goofballs
You're too good for me to outfox.
In reply to Courtesy
No, that's why some former administrators insisted that recruits must be college graduates.
I can recall some non-college educated, even though successful as players, got discarded in their prime.
Looking at the current status of WI cricket though, it can be safely deducted that that practice was unsuccessful.
In reply to Courtesy
P.S. See how Hardick stroking!
In reply to goofballs
Yep he stroking. He had better score big. This game has no second innings.
In reply to courtesy
we have developed a reputation for swinging. It's the Africa thing.
What "is the Africa thing?"
Is there a subliminal messaging in there somewhere?
BTW, two words: neurons - synapses.
In reply to TheTrail
Acetylcholinesterase will take care of this.
Btw, think swing for AFRICA.
In reply to Courtesy
Take out one Y
You corrected it eh?
In reply to TheTrail
Saw it and took action before you posted.
In reply to Courtesy
Cool. I knew you know which 'Y' to take out.
In reply to TheTrail
At one point I actually lectured in pharmacology. It was not challenging enough for me.
Pollard got drowned in Narine's honey.
If Westdem had started this topic, he would be banned for racism

That's my definition of a spinner. To tease. lure, tantalizE, have them yearning and screaming for it. Then once entrapped, DEAD MEAT
In reply to ray
I don't see that, but I just woke up.
Plus the commentators said the same thing about Hardy.....power, force, etc.
In reply to goofballs
It's the definition for a whore too.
Whores and spinners have somethings in common.
In reply to Courtesy
The best spinner has to be like the best wh*** around after good experience/seasoning to master the tricks of the trade.
Did I mention deception?
In reply to goofballs
Yep...master the tricks. Arm ball, googly, sliders, hen, top and cock spin. It's called variety and all good spinners have it.
Match done. No second innings.
In reply to Courtesy
Talking about deception....
You forgot Doosra, which translated as the second or other one.
Practically used in language to mean the other man (or woman). No society is exempt from this "SIN"
In reply to goofballs
Ahhhh yes!!!!
In our vernacular, homme coupe for the woman and jabal for the man.
But the real Doosra has been missing in action.

dear dear dear you are a lucian and as such the higher level of cricket is relatively new to you. Please dont site Sammy he was elevated above his level of competence
The rest of us west Indians have been thinking cricketers for generations and we have a history to prove it
When you and your lot catch up we will be delighted to acknowledge your progress and elevation into the world of the thinking cricketers
In reply to Courtesy
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery...
In reply to ray
Yep. We are our own worst enemy. Years of institutional racism has decimated our self esteem.
In reply to ponderiver
The direction which today's IPL commentary took today, confirms the merit of this thread and outsiders' viewpoint of us as "six hitters" (thread started before the commentary). All non West Indian commentators characterized us as "...muscle, power and brutality..." they literally saying all bran.
We play better when we don't have to think cricket albeit, this is anecdotal stuff and not coming from Wst Indians. But our cricket history is replete with "headless cricketers."
We lost an important test against South Africa needing three runs with four batsmen to bat.
Nuff said.
In reply to Courtesy
So people take you at face value?
The irony. Your underlying satire/sarcasm was lost here?
I hope I didn't cause a deflection by my usual sexual correlates.
In reply to goofballs
I take great pleasure in riling up the natives. You sir, have got to be singled out as a beacon...
In reply to Courtesy
So because IPL commentators say its so, its so?
I don't know if there is a cricketer alive or dead who could think more cricket than Malcolm Marshall. And despite hi lack of formal schooling and the trini abuse of him, if you had the opportunity to sit with Sir Garry, even for a short while, you would understand the nexus between cricket brain and cricket prowess.
Don't let others who mean you ill, diminish you mirror image, my friend. And certainly don't let that perspective be passed on to your progeny.
Anyhow, irregardless of various perspectives, Dinesh just said Russell play a very mature game.
In reply to goofballs
Kudos to Andre.
In reply to goofballs
Who the fcuk is Dinesh
In reply to Logic
Who is Logic?
Look, if I have to take you seriously, if you want to cuss go find your level of brute force and ignorance who cuss.
I don't, and don't care to associate with that level of regression.
Bye.
In reply to Courtesy
Then you are fool if rather than seeking to educate you make mock sport of dangerous messaging.
In reply to goofballs
Logic feels insulted by my thread. And with very good reason he is all riled up. But I agree with you, avoid "that level of regression."
Anyhow, people very sensitive here, so
To All and Sundry,
I use the term "Brute Force and Ignorance" frequently really as a famous quote used by an illustrious educator and Latin master during our formative years and not necessarily meant specifically as a personal insult.
His meaning was you get nowhere with just brute force and ignorance, if you can't think....challenging young ones to use the upper head.
But seriously folks, this thread was started because Gautam Gambhir's comment that "he does not not agree that Andre Russell should bat at three today...he has too many overs to face...ideally he should come in with 5 overs to go."
And Gambhir did put forward his reason which was tantamount to saying: " Can West Indians play..."
In reply to Courtesy
I am more saddened than insulted. I do feel the insult from the IPL commentators today, as did Ian Bishop. My response to goofballs was really for your benefit. The comment about Russell innings being mature is just as silly as the brute force comment. Russell is not a child. He will be 31 years old tomorrow. He has been playing franchise and international cricket for years. This is just another stereotype to go along with the brute force and bling stuff that has been thrown about by the IPL commentators.
Think. Would an Indian or European 31 year old be described as playing a mature innings?
If you want to make mock sport at racism do it within your family circle but be sure that you don't reinforce stereotypes that have been developed since slavery. The message board has all types of people and many who take comfort in its reinforcement of their prejudices.
In reply to Logic
YES SIR, (in my most juvenile voice) at your beck and call.
The irony of ironies unfolded in the final over of the KKR's innings:
While Gambhir had earlier made a case for Dinesh K to bat before Russell, in that final over, Dinesh K turned down singles because he wanted Russell to face the entire over.
If I didnt see the thread originator on the lead post and just read the content, I would have sworn khaga (or whatever msb incarnation they have these days) would have started this thread

To you your thread title:
Indeed
All brawn and no brain is we culture.
Cricket is a microsom of West Indian society.
Many still think black men stronger than the rest
In reply to InHindsight

To appreciate this thread one has to be discernible.
