Heart breaking photo of veteran cricketers

solidrock 2019-04-30 13:21:52

Because of my love for cricket WI the following photo of Uton Dowe, Danny Germs, and Jeff Dujon brings great pain looking at Dowe and Danny Germs who are not much older than Jeff back when the photo was taken. Life looked very hard for Dowe and Danny Germs in that old photo.

I know we are ultimately responsible for the choices we make in life.
But, I recommend to our present leaders in Caribbean cricket (WI and local Boards) that there must be more programs to help our veterans of West Indies cricket who fall through the cracks into difficulties in life. I pray that people appropriate will listen and act for others who have similar pitfalls.

Is there or wasn't there a Provident Fund set up to assist retired players? I can recall hearing about something to that effect some years ago

I know Danny is dead from 2016. But, my comments are for every other cricketer who falls into diverse types of difficulties which outsiders can help through supportive systems. How many see these veteran cricketers at their lowest levels and walk on the other side of the street?

Look... the hard truth is... some guys have only played a handful of international matches for west indies... where do you draw the line as to who are eligible for help?

Private orgs... sure.... but certainly wondies can't fund a retirement plan for ALL past cricketers.

I do not pretend to have all the answers and maybe there are things being done across the Caribbean that I know nothing about. All I want are leaders have people looking out for players who gave much joy to spectators who cannot help themselves after their playing days for diverse reasons.

Probably spent on drugs and foolishness. I have a feeling their other cricketers need a support system with adrug problem to give "second chance." We are still each others neighbor!

I actually met the well spoken Dowe when he was a student at CAST. Wonder what happened.

Was surprised to see him as part of the grounds crew at Sabina Park some time back. He is even one of our posting contemporaries here.

To be honest, to me, Uton Dowe looks fine for a man who will turn 70 this year.

Both Dujon - who is about a decade younger than Dowe and a few years younger than Austin- and Dowe look like "grizzled veterans".

Germs on the other hand....

In reply to RemainsUnknown Richard Austin was helped, former cricketers did a benefit for him, bought him clothes, but after a few days he was back on the streets.
