word of caution... the fastest bowler out of the west indies is one Patrick Patterson and he is not considered a great and not even mentioned in the same breath as

holding, ambrose, marshall, garner, hall and bishop...pace only takes you so far....

natty_forever 2019-04-30 20:18:32

In reply to Bigzinc I know, ala Darren Powell. However, watching the young man, I see something in this young man, I haven't seen in awhile.

The future:
AlJO
KPaul
OThomas

Not looking so bad is it?!

Ok, ok! I got carried away with the popular cliche. lol

But, but, he is good, very very good. Only bad minded people out to cut him down. Bad, bad, very bad people.
He has many unplayable balls.

I don't know what is great but I see a very very promising lad here. Not just now. He is not just a 4 over bowler either, as dismissed by some "authorities" here.

Yes, he is raw and an unfinished product but he gat de goods from the little I know.

not cutting anyone down, just tempering expectations.. Glen McGrath was one the slowest fast bowlers. .Its in the head...smarts

one Macco was a keen student of the game and can work out a batsman after a few deliveries...

thomas is smarter than darren powell ad patterson was just indisciplined......could have been one of the greats....but you need pace.

natty_forever 2019-05-01 13:31:06

In reply to Jumpstart … my 4 year old is smarter than Darren.

mean man....behave yourself. I remember's powell's last test at QPO. as unforced an error as there has ever been. West indies were beating england, he had played a starring role with fidel edwards in drawing the antigua tst at the ARG and then you go and disrespect gayle....hommie was looking for it

natty_forever 2019-05-01 14:48:24

In reply to Jumpstart … I cuss him his whole career. When you have the goods, but fail to produce, a going cuss you.

You guys need to go easy on Darren.

Someone as well spoken as he just cannot be characterized as dumb.

In other islands such well spoken players are made captain.

dude.......i remember the first spell that made me seriously look at powell. 2005, vs SA at Bourda on an absolute belter of a pitch.....after hinds and tiger had both made double tons......powell came in and bowled one of the most ferocious spells i have ever seen. Smith, de villears and kallis dismissed in no time. what an enormous waste of talent. he bowled kallis and that guy had one of the best defenses in cricket

I was at that game. Powell was in the zone that day.

Apart from Cotterrell and Gabriel, he is one of the best we have now, so embrace and support the young WI pacer.

DIEHARD 2019-05-02 15:01:03

Darren's issue was the same with most Jamaican sportsmen, they're not as good as they believe they are, so lack discipline.

They don't feel they have to work as hard, and I blame the school system for that, seen many star athletes given a pass, especially in team sports, they don't have to train as often or as hard if they're seen as more talented, in my time at least, I don't know if that's changed

mittheimp 2019-05-04 13:05:28

cannot recall Powell bowling particularly quick... must have missed that brief spell. I remember Collymore did pre back operation against the aussies. He looked a genuine fast prospect.

Your head need fixing.

My understanding of Darren Powell the cricketer is that he was a batsman who could also bowl fast (real fast as per a recalled Tony Becca article). When his batsmanship didn't develop to first class level (/standards), the authorities got him to focus on his bowling so as to take advantage of the raw speed.

That effort got his bowling developed to first class and eventually to test standards. Even our great Andy Roberts became a proponent.

Watching/following his test career, although there is no supporting documentation, Powell was the most unlucky of bowlers in that he suffered greatly from dropped catches and/or misfielding thereby leaving him with some unflattering statistics.

In my opinion, Powell was an overachiever and should receive accolades even if for his efforts.

Isn't Powell the same fellow who lost his FC contract in South Africa, for refusing to take ice baths after training?

Lack of discipline and unwillingness to do whatever it takes to improve

Maybe I forgot about that 'incident', or just wasn't aware.

Howvever, I could understand a Yardie refusing the ice-bath, dismissing it as unnatural. Maybe, just maybe, they would try it once.

DIEHARD 2019-05-05 02:07:33

In reply to Drapsey

He actually said he'd tried it, saw the benefits of it.

But refused to do it each time he was required to do

Baje 2019-05-05 02:44:10

Powell bowled a too short a length. Good for one dayers but not good ebough for test cricket. He did had a few spells wjen he actually pitched the ball up (Windies vs Austealia Sabina) and sometime when he bowled really fast (Windies vs New Zealand in New Zealand).
He had a beautiful leg cutter, but his length was too short.
