'What have we become?' PM mourns murdered friend, wife
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley this morning shared his childhood memories of murdered Tobago resident, John Mills.
Mills, 69, and his wife of 40 years, Eulyn John, were found with their hands and feet bound and throats slit at their home at Buccoo New Road on Thursday.
The motive for the double murder has not yet been determine.
In a Facebook post, Rowley said he and Mills (John) grew up together in poverty, but violence and criminality were never part of their lives. And he questioned what had become of the next generation.
He wrote, With my classmate and buddy John "Joker" Mills at our Alma Mater Bishop's High School last year. John and his wife were brutally slain by an intruder in their bedroom on Wednesday night in Tobago. What have we become? What are we producing as "the next generation"? John and I grew up together in poverty, with pride, but violence and criminality were never part of our life. Instead we shared lunch money and loved one another as we worked hard in the classroom and competed fiercely on the sports fields, honouring our parents, neighbours and respecting all adults.

April exploded into a bloodbath
In a nation already reeling from some of the highest murder rates in the world, April proved to be the bloodiest month this year.
Some 49 people were murdered in just 30 days. That represented a 25 per cent increase over the 39 people killed in April 2018, according to official data from the Crime and Problem Analysis Unit of the TTPS (see side box).
The killings came in clusters. Over the four-day Easter weekend, the death toll jumped by 11 when police tallied homicides from unrelated incidents. Five people were killed in 24 hours between April 26 and 27. A family of four, including a seven-year-old girl, was found with their throats slit in a car in Toco on April 12. Another family of three was shot to death in their vehicle in Corinth on April 29.
April exploded into a bloodbath, said criminologist Daurius Figueira, whose research specialises in the drug trade.
Link Text
As of April 30, the overall homicide toll was 169, just five fewer over the same period in 2018. Murders climbed from 120 at the end of March 2019 to 169 by the end of April, a 41 per cent increase.
The number of homicides in April exceeded the 2019 monthly average of 42. If killings continue at this rate, Trinidad and Tobago is on course to add to its grim track record of surpassing 500 murders for a second consecutive year and for the fourth time in the nations history.

Spike in police-related killings in 2019
As police confront a sustained wave of violent crime in the country, some 23 people have been killed in officer-involved shootings this year, a 64% increase over a similar period in 2018.
The 23 fatalities occurred in 14 officer-involved shootings, according to the Police Complaints Authority. Over a similar period in 2018, some 14 people were killed in 11 shootings involving police officers.
Two incidents in the last several days -in Carenage and Enterprise- have triggered a debate about whether police are being too heavy-handed in dealing with suspects. This allegation is often times levelled by the same people who ask police to help stamp out crime and criminals in their neighbourhoods.
In one high-profile incident that warranted a visit by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, three people were killed and four others, including a police officer, were wounded last Friday during a shootout between Western Division officers and residents of Big Yard, Carenage. Residents said 14-year-old Naomi Nelson was killed and the PMs Godson was among those injured.

Cocorite under siege from criminals
A community silenced. Threats, gunshots and all manner of crime is the norm for residents living in some parts of Cocorite. Speaking to the Express only on the condition of anonymity, one resident, speaking for her neighbours, shared her story.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat is the sound I wake up to almost every day and hear again before turning in for the night, she said.
I am no gun expert but I can tell difference between hearing an automatic weapon and a hand-held gun. Waterhole, Cocorite has been besieged with gunfire and gang activity, which has left residents too terrified to speak.
Seeing men walking in peoples backyard with guns is quite common, said the woman.
Even if a resident wanted to report a crime to police, chances are they would feel less compelled to do so in fear of repercussions from gang members, she said.

Two killings push murder toll to 206
by
Peter Christopher
less than hour ago
Sun May 26 2019
The murder toll went up again yesterday after two mid-afternoon shootings less than an hour apart in San Juan and Trou Macaque, Laventille.
In the first incident, at around 3.30 pm, San Juan residents thought they were coming to the aid of an accident victim when they saw a Nissan Wingroad had crashed into a light pole along the Saddle Road.
However, when they arrived on the spot to aid the cars driver, 27-year-old Trevor Donald, they realised that the injuries that ultimately contributed to his death were far from accidental. They discovered Donald slumped in the front seat bleeding from two gunshot wounds to the head. He died at the scene.
Police who arrived on the scene later found two spent shells in the car.
His killer, whom witnesses believe may have been in the car, reportedly fled the scene on foot as people came to Donalds aid unaware that a murder had just taken place.
In an unrelated incident about a half an hour later, Kafari Wilson was shot near the Plannings building in Trou Macaque. He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
These shootings raised the murder toll for the year to 206.
