Charged with Valentine's Day attempted murder of boyfriend

SHAZANA HOSEIN has been sent to St Ann’s Hospital after she appeared before the court charged with the Valentine's Day attempted murder of her boyfriend.

Hosein, 30 of Princes Town, faced Siparia magistrate Ava Vandenburg-Bailey on the allegation that she wounded Sharma Ramcharitar with intent to murder him while at the Quinam Beach Facility on February 14. The charge was laid by constable Titus.

Police prosecutor constable Salazar objected to Hosein being placed on bail, citing that she had a pending firearm matter when this offence was allegedly committed. He also requested that Hosein be sent to St Ann’s for evaluation based on her interactions with Titus.

Vandenburg-Bailey sent Hosein to St Ann’s for evaluation. She will return to court May 29.

Cocorite under siege from criminals

A community silenced. Threats, gunshots and all manner of crime is the norm for residents living in some parts of Cocorite. Speaking to the Express only on the condition of anonymity, one resident, speaking for her neighbours, shared her story.

“Rat-a-tat-tat-tat is the sound I wake up to almost every day and hear again before turning in for the night,” she said.

“I am no gun expert but I can tell difference between hearing an automatic weapon and a hand-held gun. Waterhole, Cocorite has been besieged with gunfire and gang activity, which has left residents too terrified to speak.”

Seeing men walking in people’s backyard with guns is quite common, said the woman.

“Even if a resident wanted to report a crime to police, chances are they would feel less compelled to do so in fear of repercussions from gang members,” she said.

'She did not commit suicide'

"I WANT to know how my daughter died".

This was the plea of Sandra Abiraj, the mother of Mayaro mother Julie Ramoutar who was struck and killed by a car last month.

In a telephone interview on Tuesday, Abiraj said she was not there the night her daughter died, but she is convinced that her daughter did not commit suicide by throwing herself into the path of the vehicle.

Abiraj claimed that her daughter had been abused and that she had had tried to leave a relationship.

“She did not throw herself in front of the car”, said Abiraj.

The police version of Ramoutar’s death was that she ran onto St Ann’s Road in front of a moving vehicle on the night of April 10.
