HEADLINE: WI arrive in Ireland to start tri-series

CaribbeanCricket.com 2019-05-02 14:42:06

West Indies arrived in Ireland on Wednesday evening as they prepare for the upcoming Tri-Nation Series featuring the host nation and Bangladesh.

On arrival, assistant coach Roddy Estwick spoke to CWI Media and outlined the team’s plans ahead of the first match against Ireland.

The match will be played on Sunday at the Clontarf Cricket Ground in Dublin. First ball is 10:30 am (5:30 am Eastern Caribbean Time/4:30 am Jamaica Time).

Estwick said the Caribbean side will use the upcoming tournament as part of their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 England & Wales from May 30 to July 14.

“You obviously want to win, you don’t go into any series not looking to win, but what you want is for us to play good cricket, execute our plans well, enjoy each other’s company,” said Estwick.

“It should be a great experience for a lot of the younger players. It’s an opportunity for them to showcase their talents at this level. A lot of them haven’t played for the West Indies at this level before so it’s a great opportunity for them.”

“Even though they’re not going to the World Cup, it’s still important they go out and play good cricket and the ones that are going to the World Cup, this is the chance to get in some meaningful practice, so this tournament is going to be very important for a lot of different reasons.”

At the end of the Tri-Nations Series, West Indies will travel to England for a pre-World Cup camp. They will then have official World Cup warm-up matches against South Africa and New Zealand at the County Ground in Bristol on May 26 and 28, respectively.

West Indies open the World Cup against Pakistan on May 31 at Trent Bridge.

West Indies have won the World Cup on two occasions – in 1975 and 1979 – both in England under the leadership of Clive Lloyd.

The squad is:

  • Jason Holder (Captain)
  • Fabian Allen
  • Sunil Ambris
  • Darren Bravo
  • John Campbell
  • Jonathan Carter
  • Roston Chase
  • Sheldon Cottrell
  • Shane Dowrich
  • Shannon Gabriel
  • Shai Hope
  • Ashley Nurse

  • Kemar Roach

I am tired of people just opening their mouth and mouthing platitudes which have absolutely no meaning.

Who is he speaking about?

" a lot of them"??? LIKE WHO??????

Maispwi 2019-05-02 15:56:40

Wats de real purpose of this tour? Almost half of the squad is missing and will have 2 warm up matches to prepare.

I tend to agree. Getting some cricket under one's belts is better than no cricket, but as a 'makeshift' side, you can't really build much in the way of cohesion on such a tour.

Bangladesh is getting that opportunity. And even though Ireland isn't in the WC, they're getting the exposure and experience that'll serve them well. West Indies though...

Anyway, something is better than nothing.

VIX 2019-05-02 19:28:56

wait.. Big Bat Carter© in the squad?? is licks pon licks for dem big grin

It makes no sense to play these games without the WC team, new management should have insist that all players made themselves available for this tour , all other nations players are participating in such games.

That's the problem I've been harping on for so long.

With the world cup round the corner, all players in the squad should make themselves available. Period

Priapus 2019-05-02 20:16:51

Isn't that too early for the boys to be in the UK? Early May..frigging cold. And they are expected to give good performances? Especially after regaining the Wisden trophy and drawing the ODI series with the # 1 ranked team? Oh wait......its a new Board....never mind. big grin big grin

You're going down slippery slope, it is bad with the immediate firing of the coach and selectors, and it would had been worst, to demand Gayle, Russell and others to leave money on the table in India.
In a perfect world, one would expect the selected WC squad to be in Ireland, but too many bridges have been burnt, by WICB/CWI.

But, but, but....WI boys have to eat a food especially if it depends on how many IPL games a player is on the park for.

It will be good for the guys who are not in the WC team, there is nothing like getting exposure in different conditions

I was wondering as well so I checked the list. Reifer I believe is the only one. Not sure how he got to a lot. lol

Reifer played a Test in New Zealand but really and truly how did Allen get on dis squad. He has bowled a grand total of 23 overs in an ODI and averages 6 with de bat.

His list A stats eh nothing to write home about; 20 wid de bat and 6 wickets at 56 but a decent economy rate of 5 per over. He is one lucky man

it's not a slippy slope, when the new team reached out to all players, they should have stated that all players should participate in scheduled warm up matches prior to WC.
you should not send one team to -play warm up matches and then send a different team to the WC.

Who does that:

all other boards get their players to come home why can't this new board that claims to have a good relationship with those players get them to come home?

Does it matter if it's a warmup or practice match? The players the selection panel selected should have been with the WC team, instead of this rockum sockum IPL.

The more ODI matches they get, the better they could clear out the kinks and in the process get acclimatized ahead of the main event.

It seems Skerritt in on the same path Cameron was on with these players and their loyalty to CWI.

BTW, Bangladesh team is in that tri-series; they are also in the World Cup. Do not expect Walsh to start with pace against us. He already knows West Indies batsmen do not have a good track record with spin bowling.
