Thakur to HH Pandya, 1 run, up and over off the back foot, and Raina is getting under it from cover, but he's dropped it! Chinna Thala fails to hold on. How rare is that? This was a short ball from Shardul, and Hardik tried to lift it over cover, but alas

Chahar to HH Pandya, OUT, yorker on middle, and Hardik can't flick it square. Ball hits his front leg, and Chahar appeals for lbw. Ian Gould raises the finger but Hardik reviews right away! Bat involved? Looks like the bat did not hit the ball, it only hit the ground. No edge according to UltraEdge so far, and replays show that ball would've crashed into leg stump. Big wicket for Chennai.

Bravo to Pollard, no run, yorker, but very wide outside off. Pollard lets the ball go despite not moving across, but Umpire Nitin Menon says that's a fair ball! Pollard throws his bat in the air, since he can't believe it

Oh my, What do we have here? The two umpires are talking to Pollard. Pollard had actually taken strike near the tramlines (yes, you read that right) but then walked further across - even leaving the pitch - before Bravo pulled out. Some sort of rebellion, you'd think. But umpire Gould and Menon walked up to Pollard to have a tiny chat and understand why he did that. We're ready to play again

HH Pandya to Watson, 1 run, OUT, has Dhoni been dismissed here stealing a second for the overthrow? Yes, yes. He is. Or is he? One angle says there's some doubt. Another suggests he's an inch short with the direct hit. In the end, he has been given. Dhoni started walking off even before the third umpire pressed the button. Then he stopped. Huge, huge moment in the match. Back to the ball: this was bunted gently into the leg side as they scampered a run, the throw from midwicket missed at the bowler's end and they chanced a second because the mid-on fielder didn't back up. The deep cover fielder ran around to retrieve the ball and fire the throw.

Welcome back. Have we got another twist in store? Watson simply has to explore. As much as the pressure is on CSK, you have to say the chase is still within the realms of possibility. 65 off 36. With six wickets in hand, it's definitely gettable. But well, Bumrah and Malinga will possibly bowl four of those.

What a final this is. CSK need two to win. Mumbai need a dot to win. We need a single for a super over. Quinton de Kock has taken his gloves off. People are praying in the stands. Indians, foreigners, you name it. Rohit has another conversation with Malinga. Guys, we've now gone beyond four hours too, but do we mind? What a game of cricket. Nervous faces everywhere. Deep midwicket and long on in place.

Malinga to Thakur, OUT, Mumbai Indians win IPL 2019! Slower ball, yorker on middle, and the leg-side swipe has been missed by the batsman. Malinga appeals, and umpire Menon raises his finger. 11.33pm The Mumbai Indians players are ecstatic. Kieron Pollard picks Malinga up on his shoulder. Nita Ambani is in tears. MS Dhoni is a picture of calm though. Leads his team for the handshake, but spare a thought for Shane Watson. He very nearly carried CSK through.

11.35pm The fireworks are now underway! Lights up the Sunday sky at Hyderabad. Jasprit Bumrah and Harbhajan Singh share a hug. So do the Malinga and Dhoni. What's great to see is that both teams have a smile on their faces. Class really is permanent folks. Just two overs ago, most cricket fans had thought that Lasith Malinga had lost his mojo, but when it mattered, he delivered.

sgtdjones 2019-05-12 18:29:23

Nita Ambani, team owner: "Wasn't watching the last over, definitely not the last ball (laughs). Congratulations to our captain for leading Mumbai Indians beautifully."

Akash Ambani, team owner: "Malinga is the highest wicket-taker in IPL, and this is why he's so good. I think Mumbai's environment helps us tick. We back a player to the T and we treat everyone like a family. The squad and support staff is the reason why we are champions."

Mahela Jayawardene, the Mumbai coach: "Thought we had the game when MS got out, but then Watto started hitting. Some great decisions by Rohit, going back to experienced bowlers at the death. This is why we wanted to defend. Wanted to take a punt with Pollard while batting since he is good against CSK. Asked him to get us out off the mess, and he did so. Big players come to the party in big games. Young Rahul Chahar came off age too. Held his nerve on a wicket where there wasn't much."

Sachin Tendulkar: "The key moment was Dhoni's run-out. But also in patches when Bumrah bowled those critical to even out Malinga's one poor over was also crucial. And the last over, thought Malinga finished the game out beautifully. And as for the final, we knew we defended 129 in the final two years ago, so we were confident. I think we have a terrific team - with experience and youth. As Mahela said, Rahul Chahar stands out the way he's bowled this season. Just fabulous. And don't forget Hardik. We were in the corner in many games this season, and Hardik bailed us out many times.

Shameel Raja: "Runouts changed the fate of Csk in IPL finals. It shows the importance of fitness in any game."

McClenaghan: "Proud of everyone who played. Even those who didn't. Credit to Bond and Mahela. Outstanding."

Shane Bond, bowling coach: "Today was a culmination of a lot of hard work. We knew 150 was below par but knew we had the bowlers. Mali was great in the clutch moments. We have players like Behrendorff and Alzarri who are not here right now, but they have all contributed."

Lewis: "Can someone tell me if that was missing leg or not? " -- the final ball? No, hitting leg stump.

Suryakumar: "Perfect final. Reason behind success is our processes and routines. We share our ideas, and that helps each player know their strengths and weaknesses."

Kishan: "We are known to come back, so we came back well despite a few poor overs. Every half-chance we created, those were crucial too. Bumrah is excellent. When he said he had two more overs to bowl, I was pretty sure he would concede less in the back end."

Hardik: "Lot of people were saying that we had won three times so they would win the fourth. But I told Krunal, no, it's going to be 4-0. Lost a few kgs today (laughs), such a tight game. I used to have Mumbai Indians posters in my room growing up, and to win with them: amazing. Played well this season, but now time to move on. Want to lift that World Cup trophy as well.

Pollard: "These sort of games, these are the games you want to perform. People remember these games. Playing in so many finals, I knew getting runs adds pressure for the team batting second. I missed a few shots, but the way Bumrah and Malinga bowled in the last two overs - they finished it off for us. Malinga, a legend. Even in 2017, we didn't put too many runs on the board. The team that panics less does better. It was a team performance."

Bumrah: "The ball was reversing when de Kock missed the ball, but we wanted to stay calm since similar things happened against Pune in 2017 as well. We always believed in our team this season. We have confidence in each and every individual. On their given day, any of our players can be matchwinners."

Malinga: Last ball, I thought that if they get one run, it would be a Super Over, but I wanted us to win. So I went for my wicket ball."

12midnight It's a brand new day, but the presentation is still a few minutes away. Visuals show Dhoni and Fleming in conversation, perhaps discussing where their chase went wrong.

Andre Russell wins the award for the season's Most Valuable Player.

Russell wins the award for best strike-rate. "Happy to win the striker award," says Russell via a recorded message. "I think a lot of guys were up for the award this season, but I'm fortunate to win it. Hopefully next year we will go all the way and I can collect the key in the final."

Rohit Sharma, the winning captain is a happy man as he walks up to collect the winners' cheque of INR 20 crore. He says: "We played some good cricket. Good to see we qualified in the top two. At the start of the tournament, we wanted to split the tournament into two halves. But credit to the entire squad, not just the XI. Even the support staff as well."

Mahela Jayawardene, the Mumbai coach collects the winners' award from the BCCI treasurer.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the losing captain walks up to collect the runners-up cheque of INR 12.50 crore. He says: "As a team we had a good season. But we need to go back and reflect. Wasn't one of those years where we played very good cricket. Middle order never clicked, but somehow we managed. Today was one game we should've done slightly better. It was quite a funny game, we were passing the trophy to each other. Both committed mistakes, and eventually the winning team was the one that committed one mistake less. Our bowlers did really well. It was not a 150 wicket, but the bowlers kept us in the hunt. They kept getting wickets when it was really needed. Batting, someone kept chipping in and we kept winning. To be consistent next year, we will have to really think hard. It's too early to say right now (about next year's plans). Up next is the World Cup. That's the first priority. After that, we will chat about CSK. Nothing against the bowlers, but the batsmen could've done better. Hopefully yes, we'll see you next year."

Kieron Pollard gets the award for the season's best catch. Took a screamer at deep point off Suresh Raina in the league stage.

Kieron Pollard vs MS Dhoni

Mumbai Indians had lost their momentum after a fast start and much revolved around how Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard do in the death overs. Hardik Pandya was mostly greeted with short of length deliveries aimed at the body, while for Pollard, Dhoni had a man stationed at very straight long on and another one wide. For Pollard, not the kind of batsman to play the scoop or the glide, it was a well laid out move. Pollard's hard hits down the ground found the fielder often, ensuring Mumbai Indians did not gallop towards a big score.

The West Indian, however, did get his own back. He smashed Thakur and Tahir for sixes before finishing with back-to-back fours in the innings to give Bumrah, Malinga and Co something to bowl at. Pollard finished with 41 off 25 balls, giving MI a late boost as they ended with 149.

Two runs off the penultimate delivery left CSK needing two off the final delivery. But Malinga had one last trick up his sleeve. A slower full delivery completely deceived Shardul Thakur, and had the batsman plumb in front. Malinga was villain not too long ago, now he was propped up on the shoulders of Kieron Pollard as a champion
