Gayle/ Hope connondrum

DIEHARD 2019-05-17 11:01:02

Our two best openers from the looks of things...

But they don't have any experience batting together..and they didn't look good batting together vs England.

Hope likes to run his singles.

Gayle & Lewis bat well together, both deal in boundaries, but what kind of form is Lewis in?

I say Gayle & Lewis to open.

Powerplay batting will be crucial for us and we need to maximize the first 10 overs. If things do no work out Shai can come in to play his sheet anchor role and we resort to normal tactics.

Did Gayle and Campbell not open vs England? Any way hope has to open he is currently one of the best opener in the world.

jen 2019-05-17 11:21:38

Opening will be better for Hope.

For the team, Lewis & Gayle maybe better. Hope gets frustrated at times batting with Gayle with the reluctance to take singles. It's a crucial part of Hope's game so understandable why it would frustrate him. So, just for this only, i'll saw Lewis & Gayle. When Gayle calls it a day, i'll make Hope my permanent opener, unless you get 2 other openers who are doing really well.

So Hope comes in at 3?

Once not opening, 3 the latest.

I agree. Gayle/Lewis open and Hope at 3

Entertainer 2019-05-17 12:50:51

I too am of the opinion Hope should bat at 3 and given the role to bat throughout the innings . I don't see this team defending less than 330 against most teams in this tournament and unless the wickets provide lots of assistance to bowlers I say we try and out bat teams.

My starting team for the world cup would be :

Gayle
Lewis
Hope
Hetmyer
Chase
Pooran
Russel
Holder
Roach
Cotterel
Gabriel

I think our best spin option is Chase... Him Russel,Holder and the fast bowlers should give me my 50 overs.

Batting positions change depending on the need to consolidate or continue an onslaught.

Chase is no in the squad.

Larr Pullo 2019-05-17 13:13:51

Lewis get's bowled down first ball and WI is 0/1 and in comes Hope. What then?

I agree also. I would make hope a floater. If Gayle Lewis Hety Bravo get going..Shai can float all the way to number 8. A few quick wickets and he should be end by #5

Entertainer 2019-05-17 13:16:32

In reply to Seechy

Now that's an even bigger problem than who opens...the spinners in that squad will be a waste of space in any team we select.

Entertainer 2019-05-17 13:18:30

Same problem if Hope opens and gets bowled down first ball.

Who would you want batting at 3 in that current squad ?

I'm saying that maybe Gayle should bat down the order and not open if he's not going to run singles. He could float down the order and come in during the later Power Play or at the end and just swing for the fences.

Change his role in the team a bit.

If Gayle and Lewis got us off to a good start then I would send Hety next and try to maintain the momentum. If we are looking good then Russel followed by Bravo. We need to score heavily if we are going to have a chance of winning.

WI_cricfan 2019-05-17 13:27:06

Gayle should bat at 4 or so not open

Gayle is like an old car..needs time to warm up. Evin Hety Russel dont mind Gayle not running singles..they can bat with him. Gayle will bat deep into the innings and give good reward for a slow start

So, your team would only have 1 spinner??? You must have a lot of trust and faith in WI fast bowlers! I’m in favor of including Chase only because he offers something with the bat, but WI need another spinner in the lineup....Nurse or Allen!

Entertainer 2019-05-17 13:52:52

I dont see the sense in picking a spinner for spinning sake...they wont restrict batsmen or get many wickets...with Chase not in the squad they will be playing with one spinner regardless.

This ODI bowling line up will get mauled by any of the top 6 teams ...

Variety my friend! All the teams have some difficulty with spin! It doesn’t take much to induce a miscued shot!

That's something WI should have tried ages ago, or even during this tri-series.

I dont think the World Cup is the time to experiment.

And its something now only conceivable with the emergence of Hope as an opener

If we can reach 30 overs without a loss of wicket, then yeah big grin big grin

9/10 times, Hope will come 3 once Gayle & Lewis open.

You still think WI don’t need more than one spinner after the shellacking Gabriel and Roach are getting from Bang!

Logic 2019-05-17 18:49:10

To sum it all up.... we are screwed whatever we do.

Logic 2019-05-17 19:01:25

These flat wickets pose a real problem for us. Roach and Holder, 2 of our best bowlers in helpful conditions will be cannon fodder. Spinners with no guile or revs will travel far places.

I would actually consider Oshane over Roach and play 1 of the 2 spinners only, probably Allen as better fielder.

Would leave out Bravo but Lewis must open. The wickets are so friendly he could rediscover his form. Hope at 3.

VoopsandOut 2019-05-17 20:56:26

In reply to Logic

agreed. We have to bring along Allen. What happened today could happen to any bowler and experience would have helped. We cannot go into the WC with only fast bowlers as England will obviously be preparing flat wickets for their batters, which is their strength.

Let Gayle finish his career, batting where he has been batting.
Lewis at three, Hetmyer-4, Bravo - 5, Pooran -6, Russell -7, Holder -8, Nurse -9, two of the pacers, can make up the last two slots.
