Osaka gawn first round

Casper 2019-07-01 16:22:44

In reply to Chrissy

If only Venus could find some form. She’s in the most favourable half of the draw.

Casper 2019-07-01 16:47:54

Another seeded player gone; Men’s #6 Zverev

Tryangle 2019-07-01 16:55:28

In reply to Chrissy

Dang. Really rough patch for her of late.

I did read somewhere that Putintseva is 3-0 vs Naomi so maybe just a matchup issue?

Casper 2019-07-01 17:40:20

Venus already down one set. At her age, Venus can’t afford to lose too many 1st, sets

Casper 2019-07-01 17:40:22

Osaka gawn first round

Since firing her coach after the Aussie Open, it’s been petty much downhill for Naomi.

Coincidence?

FuzzyWuzzy 2019-07-01 21:14:17

In reply to imusic

To quote my fren POINT it is my considered opinion that Naomi like Sloane don't want to put in the hard work required to stay on top.

mikesiva 2019-07-01 21:21:51

In reply to Casper

Tsitsipas gone too.

Chrissy 2019-07-01 23:02:21

In reply to imusic

Could be many things including nice nice money and the kid wants to enjoy spending some. Focus missing - she'll have to decide how badly she wants it.

Venus and Serena were well prepared and it wasn't coaching alone - it was way more than that. Richard and Oracene had way more to do with their success than any coach - and that is not to diss any of their coaches.

Chrissy 2019-07-01 23:03:21

In reply to Tryangle
She hasn't done well on the grass. We'll see if she can sustain her career.

mikesiva 2019-07-02 12:39:54

Not based on her form. Hope she doesn't turn out to be Capriati version 2

Kyrgios through to the next round

Chrissy 2019-07-02 14:08:11

Oh skites - Thiem in trouble, Querrey leading 5-0 in di 4th. He won the first set and it's all down hill since.

Federer was broken

FuzzyWuzzy 2019-07-02 14:17:16

In reply to Chrissy

Thiem like he is baby Rafa...only good on clay

Chrissy 2019-07-02 14:19:51

The Fed loses the first set (3-6) to virtually unknown Saffie, 23 year old Lloyd Harris.

Chrissy 2019-07-02 14:25:21

Harris has won two matches so far this year - one was against Darian King

Chrissy 2019-07-02 14:30:37

Thiem out too.

mikesiva 2019-07-02 17:18:19

In reply to Chrissy

Serena Williams had to work harder for that second set 7-5.

Ayenmol 2019-07-02 17:19:44

Monticone pushed as hard as she could...Serena was not having it...That was an incredible last game...you can't double fault twice in this kinda games though.

Chrissy 2019-07-02 17:53:06

Rafa in three - Tsonga in three.

Francis in trouble here

Ayenmol 2019-07-02 18:05:38

That Watson ai highlight putting Kerber over Serena tells you all you need to know about ai analysis...

Serena was for the match....kerber did not win the point!

mikesiva 2019-07-02 18:40:55

Casper 2019-07-03 16:17:38

15 seeded players have gone down, and this is just the third day. Wawrinka is just the latest.

Casper 2019-07-03 17:23:02

And another seed bites the dust. This time Edmund going down at the hands of the Spanish veteran Verdasco.

mikesiva 2019-07-03 18:13:51

In reply to Casper

Felix Auger-Aliassime gets through in four sets...at least one member of the male Next Generation who made it through to the third round. Zverev, Tsitsipas, Thiem, and Shapovalov all fell by the wayside.

StumpCam 2019-07-03 19:25:04

Madison Keys out in straight sets....

StumpCam 2019-07-03 20:21:03

Straight sets for CoCo 6-3, 6-3.

Lemme say this, CoCo will make it to the Quarterfinals IF she continues to play like she did today.
Well, actually not quite! Seems like she will have to play either Halep or Azaenka in th 4th round!

Keys and Sloane does not have the skills that this girl has!

Chrissy 2019-07-03 20:53:36

In reply to StumpCam

My only worry is her age - I worry big time about players starting so early. That said she looks like Venus but with Serena's serve. She really has talent.
She has not lost a set from the qualifiers.

mikesiva 2019-07-04 11:21:46

In reply to Chrissy

Agreed.

Sloane Stephens wins in straight sets.

Chrissy 2019-07-04 16:26:43

2-0 Serena 2nd set

Chrissy 2019-07-04 16:50:16

Second set to Serena 6-2 lol

Kerber sent packing in three earlier.

mikesiva 2019-07-04 16:51:37

In reply to Chrissy

That second set was Serena Williams back to her best.

Dan_De_Lyan 2019-07-04 17:23:03

mikesiva 2019-07-05 10:41:44

It was a close match, and keenly contested, though...credit to Kyrgios.

Seeds tumbling yesterday....

Kerber
Isner
Cilic

mikesiva 2019-07-05 11:32:21

And today....

Zhang knocks out Wozniacki.

Tryangle 2019-07-05 14:36:40

In reply to mikesiva

Mercy I thought this stuff only happens at the French?

On another note, is C-Woz now officially a journeyman (well woman)? Seems like consistently mediocre finishes as of late.

Chrissy 2019-07-05 16:11:28

Halep with ease 6-3; 6-1 - Djoka struggling Won the 1st 7-5. 2nd set Tiebreaker 3-3 Hurkacz

Coco looking shaky today - would love her to make it to next week

Casper 2019-07-05 16:54:52

In reply to Chrissy

This Hercog looks like a bodybuilder.

Casper 2019-07-05 17:00:47

I wished Coco had gone down the line rather keeping going across court on that breakpoint.

Casper 2019-07-05 17:05:48

Well, this is Coco’s first big test in the Big Times. How she responds to this first set loss will tell what kind of future champion she will be.

Casper 2019-07-05 17:19:10

Okay Coco. This is a learning experience. You are still a future champion.

mikesiva 2019-07-05 18:12:18

Gauff back from the dead! One set all....

Casper 2019-07-05 18:14:01

Chrissy 2019-07-06 14:58:14

Rafa up two sets v Jo-Willy 6-2; 6-3

hotarobin 2019-07-06 15:14:39

Tsonga is one of those annoying players that just fails to show up when it matters...all of the French players are like that. The Spanish players have a different mindset. You have to beat them each and every time!

hotarobin 2019-07-06 15:16:44

Slone is one of the most naturally talented but lazy players of the game. She can be very frustrating to back for her fans...that why I dumped her... lol lol

FuzzyWuzzy 2019-07-06 15:40:14

In reply to hotarobin

Tsonga is past his best plus just returning from injury.

FuzzyWuzzy 2019-07-06 15:40:39

In reply to hotarobin

She doesn't like grass

mikesiva 2019-07-06 15:50:23

In reply to FuzzyWuzzy

Tsonga has a strong forehand but a weak backhand.

The top players exploit that weakness ruthlessly.

Chrissy 2019-07-06 15:54:45

In reply to hotarobin

Well I was never a fan

hotarobin 2019-07-06 16:10:39

Will Pouille break the trend and be the first French player to show some guts at this tournament? Federer is an old man now...

FuzzyWuzzy 2019-07-06 16:10:53

...and we know why wink wink wink

Chrissy 2019-07-08 13:17:22

Next up Riske

Rafa leading 6-2; 6-2

hotarobin 2019-07-08 13:54:40

In reply to mikesiva

nothing surprising there...typical of the women's circuit it seems, win one tournament then go out early the very next...I am actually surprised that she advanced that far...she is not a great player in my book so I expect her to fall away just like many of the other before her...

Only the likes of Serena is really true to form hence why she wins my vote as the one of the top three best sports persons of this era including men!! Serena's biggest problem is Serena and time...

Chrissy 2019-07-08 13:57:54

Rafa in three.
First break to Halep

hotarobin 2019-07-08 14:05:46

In reply to Chrissy

was a good dream run for Coco...she's a fighter but so is Halep and I give experience the edge here so Halep in 2. If she lets Coco get a set however I think Coco will win.

Chrissy 2019-07-08 14:18:00

In reply to hotarobin

Halep takes the 1st set with ease.
Sadly I think the dream ends today. Coco is tough and Simone has a tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. That said Simone is much stronger and Coco must be getting tired - her upper body is still undeveloped.

My dream for her was to reach the second week and she has achieved that. Anything else is gravy.

Chrissy 2019-07-08 14:27:29

Coco breaks back - 1-2 2nd set

hotarobin 2019-07-08 14:35:33

In reply to Chrissy

..happy for her, she has announced herself on the world stage. Hope the pressure of expectation will not get the better of her...

Chrissy 2019-07-08 14:40:15

In reply to hotarobin

Yep - broken now - Halep 4-2.
Coco's shoulders are drooping.
Great start to her slam career. If she comes back from here, I'll be stunned.

dale_staple 2019-07-08 14:45:30

In reply to Chrissy

Yeah...Haleps experience and better physical shape is telling. Coco will be back. She looks like one for the future.

Serena seems to be back on cruise control. But i am still surprised at how many upsets there have been on the womens side.

hotarobin 2019-07-08 14:50:08

In reply to dale_staple

the only upset that surprises me on the women's side is when Serena gets ousted whilst in good form... lol lol

Serena still only at 80% by her standards but she has won majors at 80% before..

Chrissy 2019-07-08 14:51:21

Halep wins 6-3; 6-3

Chrissy 2019-07-08 14:52:00

In reply to hotarobin

Really!

hotarobin 2019-07-08 15:44:34

In reply to Chrissy

let me put context to that statement....it usually takes time for him to get going on the grass after the clay season...I don't think he has dropped a set as yet and has won fairly easily thus far...

Chrissy 2019-07-08 16:40:09

Konta takes out Kvitova 4-5; 6-2; 6-4

Serena Williams is the greatest player on earth or Mars.

To the semis.

Casper 2019-07-09 14:13:29

In reply to Chrissy

Still has to tighten up that game to win this Slam. I am not feeling a 100% confident, but remain hopeful.

dale_staple 2019-07-09 14:14:26

In reply to Chrissy

Too close for comfort. But she dug it out the dirt.

Hmm...i will see who her semi opponent is before commenting.

unfortunately I haven't seen it. Did she hit lots of unforced errors or did Riske hit plenty winners?

That's heaping praise indeed, considering the sports legends over the past century. She's clearly an all-time great at her sport (or sport, in general).

Serena was never losing dis match. Here you have a 28 year old who has never won a slam and also has a habit of double faulting when under pressha playing against the greatest of them all.
Only an injury was going to stop Serena today.

The best joke was hearing the coms tell me that Riske was this great grass court player. Wuh Risk?
lol lol lol

What this great match showed me is that Serena is fit. Fit as a fiddle.

She chased down every ball and then made razor sharp returns. She played long exhausting rallies and showed no exhaustion.

All this match did is left me saying "Me sorry for whoever comes up against her next!

true she can win a slam at 80-85% especially when Kerber and Kvitova are already out...for them she needs to be 85-90% fit...

This girl Strycova does not bring a power game. Im trying to figure how will she stop an experienced high class playing determined Serena in a Grand Slam semifinal esp Wimbledon?

I expect Serena to blow her off the court in two straight sets unless Serena beats Serena.

Halep, however has a fight on her hands with a Top Ten determined opponent.

The same old story in the men's semis...Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and A.N. Other.

The women's semis are very different from the French. Can Serena finally get GS title 24? Or will Strycova upset her too? And that Halep vs Svitilova match could be interesting.

Serena's net worth is about $180m.

Alexis net worth is about $9m.

It's a real stretch for anyone to say Serena married up.

JahJah 2019-07-11 15:11:26

In reply to mikesiva

I'm dealing with your known vs unknown line of argument. You have a bunch of despicable known people who I wouldn't consider a step up.

Case in point: Donald Trump big grin

Ayenmol 2019-07-11 15:18:19

In reply to mikesiva

Who was Serena going to marry that was 'known'?

The point is not the money or fame...Serena is a catch because she has name and money...with all due respect...and am not talking about personality because none of us know these people personally..
Serena does not get such a man without those things...a good looking man like that always attracts women...including those with money...

Ok...? Dont give me the feminist double standard.

That's the last I will say because I think we all know the reality...at the end of the day, they are a family... I was just saying...

Ayenmol 2019-07-11 15:42:23

I thought I already did...money comes and goes...once you reach a level of financial security it's just vanity...looks and panache, particularly on a man with brains is a different story.

For a long time Stedman complimented Oprah...till she got crazy rich...yet they still together even if not married...

Serena married up...go look at the other men in her life prior...

I just watched de highlights...Serena is a boss. I love she too bad yes!

She normally steam rolls over Halep but Serena has also been getting tight at these junctures a lot more often than before. Hopefully she relaxers and gives Halep a good beating...

Chrissy 2019-07-12 12:10:11

Here we go di Djoka v Bautista Agut.
It does not seem likely, but there could be an all Spanish final wink wink

hotarobin 2019-07-12 12:21:08

OK men's semis should be in session shortly.

Joka should wrap up Agut in three straight. I'd be surprised if he loses more than a set and a half worth of games in the entire match...

An aging yet fit Federer takes on Nadal after the Joka match. Nadal is playing some of the best grass court tennis that I have seen him play in a long time. Most would give Federer the edge but I believe it much more balanced and actually leaning towards Nadal. This is because Nadal gets in Federer's head forcing him to abandon his game and succumb under pressure to his arch rival. If Federer can play his game i.e. Play quick short points, get free points on his serve, and trust his down the line backhand shot and avoid the backhand chip then Nadal is no match. Nadal has one way and only one way to beat Fed which is to pepper the Federer backhand. He does absolutely nothing else.

Unfortunately I won't see the game but I am open to whatever the outcome is for the Nadal vs Federer match as I believe the winner will ultimately lose to Joka in the final. Of course my heart is elsewhere but I have to face reality.

I don't think that he hurt himself. I believe that he likes to play with the people's emotions to garner support so every now and then he will not give 100% and give up a set in the process...Joka is very very calculated...

No reason for Federer to be spent. His match was a little over 3 hours long, and just 15 minutes longer than Gluten-free's semi-final. You play Nadal in a semi of a grand slam and you win in 4 sets and 3 hours, you take that.

It was vital that he won the first set today, and that will be the case on Sunday as well.

A. It is reported that this year the courts are slower

Doesn’t mean there’re will be 44 ball rally’s on a regular

B. Bautista Agut had a 44 ball rally with Djokovic in the semis

Good player, but he’s no Roger Federer

C. Djokovic leads Federer in h2h at Wimbledon

Leads.....not undefeated.

D. Serena's super coach Patrick just said so

Serena’s super coach picked Nadal to beat Fed today. He also hasn’t gotten her over the 23 hump despite multiple attempts either. He’ll have another chance at it tomorrow. We’ll see how super he is after that

Djoka IS #1 player in the rankings. He was supposed to be in the final. He also hasn’t faced anyone in the top 20 on his way to the final this year. Not his fault BTW, but he hasn’t exactly been tested yet

Fed is......well....THE FED. We’ll see what happens on Sunday. Still my pick tho despite Djoka being the favourite.

I am not saying that it is impossible for Federer to beat Joka but it has not happened in a very long time plus Joka finds a way to bring his A++ game against Federer.

The FED is still very good but he is no longer the FED. He himself admitted that it getting a bit harder to keep up but he loves the game and still enjoys playing so he is pressing on.

I will have to watch the highlights before making a call but at this point I believe the match is Joka's to lose...

hotarobin 2019-07-13 11:58:55

I just watched the replay of the Federer vs Nadal semi and I must say that it was a strange match to me.

If you had to show me the scoreline and ask me to guess the players I would not choose Federer and Nadal. The score was more reflective of Joka vs someone else with a typical Jokaesq throw away second set.

Nine times out of ten if Fed loses the second set with that kind of scoreline against Nadal or Joka it is the beginning of the end. However Fed somehow turned it around and Nadal looked more winded than Federer with Federer winning the majority of the long rallies...that sentence doesn't even make sense!...but it is the truth.

Federer did not rely on his backhand down-the-line shot although his backhand was OK enough. Normally for Federer to dominate Nadal, his backhand has to be a weapon capable of hitting down the line winners, a tactic for which Nadal has no answer (see Australian Open 2017 final).

Also from the body language Federer was clearly in Nadal's head and not the other way around as it normally is. Nadal was clearly annoyed and I believe made more unforced errors. That also doesn't make any sense.

The match did not appear to be played at a very high level like the 2017 Australian Open, but Fed said that they played at a high level in his interview.
I can go on but the point is that I found the match to be full of uncharacteristic traits.

I still give the edge to Joka in the final on Sunday but admittedly I have not seen him play at all throughout the tournament.

You are all over the place....is it what she is going through?
Or is it ego?

She does not want to commit herself to the rigors...fir good reason...but wants to act like a baby when the younger players are demolishing her.

That is ego... she thinks she can just show up play herself into shape then win...that speaks to the strength of the women's draw.

She has no regard for these women's game then throws tantrums when an opponent demolishes her!

I remember people on this board chastising the commies when Serena and Venus were demolishing Davenport and they would point to all that Davenport was going through.

Many here thought they were not giving the Williams' their due.

If Serena wants to get 24, let her rededicate herself.

Otherwise, she just isn't good enough.

Still better than Court...but a poor example of sportsmanship. Bow out, or put in the work...enough of the drama!

Look that Halep beat Serena doesn't move me one way or the other. I am a Serena fan but not a sycophant. Unlike some o admit age is catching up and she will increasingly be picked off by opponents. Same as for Federer and in time Nadal and Djokovic.

However today I saw no behaviour from Serena that was unsportsmanlike or sore loser.

Ayenmol 2019-07-13 16:54:15

In reply to FuzzyWuzzy

It is more than age...Serena does not dedicate enough time to her trade...much like Tiger...additionally her continued inability to control her emotions when down is becoming a negative in her quest.

Venus has been as plagued if not more so than Serena as respects health...yet she graciously and professionally endures it all.

This behaviour is beneath someone of this stature...that is my feeling and it embarrasses me to see this display continually by Serena...she does not need 24 to be regarded as the greatest.

Competitive or not. Act like an adult.

If Steffi were on 23 wins, and was banging on door losing final after final, we could then sit here and judge the situations. Who knows what would have unfolded then, and how she would react.

You coming down on the woman for showing raw emotion because she sees the writing on the wall...as far as the match was concerned.

But look at you talking 'bout how someone should act like an adult...and you're not even under immense pressure...other than not being able to argue with any rasshole intelligence.

But stick with...

We can win easily without KD. We doh need him. Even called him a bitch (Draymond did). But without KD, Toronto gave us fits and in the end BEAT us. Along the way, in our desperation we wheelchaired out KD, in an effort cut the 3-1 deficit we were facing, against a team we were expected to sweep (like we did Portland) without said KD...the bitch.

Oh well, I guess we needed KD after all...to beat a team of 1 guy, a bunch of journey men, a dude fresh from the D league and a kid from Africa who picked up a basketball about a half a decade ago!!!!! big grin

Where did it go wrong for our Super team...the one that won in 2015 due to Love and Kyrie out injured; lost in 2016, and then won for two years with the addition of KD while seeing injuries to CP3 and Klaw which helped us win after being DOMINATED by them before their respective injuries. big grin

Did we really have 3 empty titles then? big grin

Name-calling: Children call each other names. Adults seek to understand issues. Adults do not make ad hominen attacks, that is, attacks on people's personal traits. Instead, they attack the problem. They do not disrespect others with mean labels.

There is one exception. Sometimes adults, like firefighters who battle forest fires, have to fight fire with fire. They may need to use "fire" to manage an angry child or an out-of-bounds adult, in order to get them to cease their bad behavior.

This is from that Psychology link I posted earlier.

Some people wonder why get into it with dufuses, nice to know there are Scientific reasons.

Joka in his typical throw second set approach... This guy is calculated... I hope Federer makes it backfire... lol lol

Devin 2019-07-14 14:38:10

Djoker gone to the bathroom to get some gluten-free injections.

hotarobin 2019-07-14 14:38:24

This is very interesting though...Joka has an excellent record when winning the first set...Federer has to prepare for a refreshed approach from Joka...
