What's this Russian vessel doing in T&T?

A Russian sea tanker has docked in the Port of Spain port so its crew can rest and replenish stock says National Security Minister Stuart Young.

He further disclosed that in September this year a United States naval vessel is carded to dock at La Brea, Trinidad where its crew will provide hospital services to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

At the Parliament sitting yesterday Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal asked the Minister to state the reasons why naval clearance and approval to was given to Russian navy sea tanker ‘Kama’ to enter and berth in this country’s territorial waters.

Young said the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Georgetown, Guyana requested the approval of the Trinidad and Tobago authorities for the ‘Russian mid-sized tanker Kama’ to enter the Port of Sport of Spain for the purposes of replenishing vessel stock and to rest the vessel’s personnel.

Young said this was no unusual because Trinidad and Tobago routinely receives requests from other countries to traverse its territorial waters or to dock at the port for various reasons.

He said there are frequent requests for permission from countries such as the United States, Canada and Colombia for ‘various reasons’ for their vessels to dock at the port of Port of Spain and the Government has ‘no problem’ in granting such request.
