I may have mentioned this here before but it's worth repeating. When Lincoln was assassinated there was a session of congress devoted to those members who wished to make remarks about the late president.

The speeches were ordinary and the speaker asked Douglas who was present if he wished to make some remarks. By the time Douglas was finished, totally impromptu, he had the members standing and applauding.

Mary Lincoln was so pleased she gave Lincoln's cane to Douglas.
