Best World Cup Format

This should be the way forward. It separate the best teams from those with one or two fluke victories.

Too long..they have to find a way to play 2 matches per day..

I can't see this format being used say in the WI. Crowd sizes smaller and logistically expensive.

I'd agree with Khaga . Just too long .
If they can manage to play 2 or 3 games a day they should be able to squeeze in a rain save day or two as well.

However, this is now turning out to be a farce. Today's game will confirm it. Win toss bat, win.

I prefer a tournament where ICC ranking coming into the tournament itself counts for something.

Two groups of 5 would make for a more exciting tournament I think.

Tournaments should allow for Cinderella stories, it's what makes college basketball tournament so exciting, you do want to give lower ranked teams a chance to move forward if they defeat top teams so groups based on rankings.

Group A- Top 2 ranked teams and the bottom 3.

Group B has all the other teams. Top 2 go through from each zone.

Zones would have been
England India Sri Lanka Afghanistan and West Indies

New Zealand, Bangladesh, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa.

Would the top 4 have been any different based on actual head to head results, in this world cup?

Sri Lanka, England and India would be tied on 6 points, and head to head would be the tie breaker in my format followed by NRR that would give SL a greater chance of going through ahead of England from that group in my format

Upsets in a tournament should have greater implications for the next round, SL upset victory vs England in the end didn't count for anything, that doesn't make for an entertaining tournament.

And if Oz defeats SA as expected, NZ would not make the final 4 in my tournament, Pakistan would have been on 6 pts, NZ on 4, this final 4 was too predictable from early in the tournament, upsets meant nothing, boring

I'd prefer 2 groups x 6.

Top 8 qualify automatically for World Cup, next 4 go through via preliminary qualifier like for this World Cup.

Preliminary qualifier - 2 groups x 5, two group winners go to World Cup.

2nd in Group plays 3rd in other group as a play-off and that's how you get your 4 Preliminary qualifiers.

Finally, the 4 preliminary qualifiers go into an open draw for which Finals group they go into.

Not going to happen - the TV people like one-match-a-day, which of course means the tournament is super-long and the rainout-potential can't be addressed.

10 teams is still too few for a World Championship. This is the first WC with zero Associates, and the Cinderella/underdog/romance factor was eliminated. Kenya/Windies, Ireland/Pakistan, Ireland/Windies, no more.

But the powers arent likely to shift back anytime soon.

Meanwhile rugby union, basketball enjoy the expanded formats. FIFA aren't worried about the likes Thailand 'messing up stats', they just agreed to expand the Women's World Cup field. Because they know the 'best of the best' can still share the stage with showcasing the sport on a global level.

With the World Cups slated to be held in Big 3 nations for the foreseeable future, they won't have to worry about WI hosting anytime soon.

Excellent format; 2 games can be on Fri, Sat and Sun but the load shared equally
