Concacaf's new World Cup qualifying process

seems like something the ICC would propose

It is a bit convoluted, and the writer takes a negative approach...but then all I see is pros...more matches. More equitable matches, more experience etc. There are so many small Nations under the auspices of concacaf, this seems a good approach to serve the needs of it's members.

ranking is not a sound metric, it can be managed and manipulated by teams with money, eg playing noncompetitive friendlies.

problemjay 2019-07-11 13:10:32

stupid format, and too much emphasis on rankings for teams to reach the world cup

US

Costa Rica

Uhhm your prediction is based on what? they will be using the rankings from June 2020, that is about a year from now. Cuba could be in the top 6 by then

JoeGrine 2019-07-11 13:49:26

So a team which is ranked 7-35 will remain alive to qualify for the playoffs whilst a team ranked 1-6 which finishes 5th or 6th will have no further chance.

Why not, in the interest of fairness have teams that finish 4-6 in the Hex play the top team from rankers 7-35 for the right to represents CONCACAF in an inter-continental playoff. More games, yes, but also more fair.

Good format...will encourage more serious approach to national games.

I was thinking the same thing when reading that. How do you reward the team coming in from the cold so easily?

Your idea makes much more sense.

I think the climb for Cuba would be too steep; even if in the Nations League they swept the US and Canada... I dunno.

Wait and see I suppose.

I agree with Ayenmol on the more matches for smaller teams bit, that's absolutely critical for long term growth.

What I don't like is that there is no pathway for those 7-35 ranked teams to directly qualify. Seems less fair than having the same chances as those ranked 1-6.

They're still finding their way, yes, and by the time of the next World Cup they'll have to revamp it anyway.

I think, as JoeGrine alludes to, those teams on the fringes of being in the top 6, will they *want* to be in the Hex or would they rather be considered favourites to get to the playoffs from starting outside of the Hex?

I really don't know what's wrong about say two 6 team groups, everyone get a chance to make it. Concacaf must really want to keep that USA Mexico rivalry.

You have NO idea who will be in the top 6 in ranking come June 2020. Cuba could be there and Jamaica could not be there in the top 6.. You are making an assumption, so you saying the climb for Cuba is too steep is the same as people was saying Haiti reaching a Gold cup semi final is too steep.

Yes wait and see is the best part of your response.

This format by the way makes it easier for the likes of Mexico and US to qualify for the World Cup.

I bet you come next wold cup in 2026 the format will be changed dramatically

We may get a gauge on how valued the Gold Cup and later Nations League matches are when the next rankings come out and we see how much Curacao rose in their win against Honduras and draw against Jamaica, and Haiti after beating Costa Rica and Canada.

Between now and June 2020 each team is going to have a minimum 4 or 6 Nations League matches, although we don't know if any int'l football (friendlies or other) will take place between March and June. Not many matches.

Nobody will disagree, because the World Cup will expand. There will likely be no place for a Hex in Concacaf. Who knows how they'd draw it up.
