Kapil Dev says WI need leader like a Lloyd

Legendary former Indian captain Kapil Dev says the West Indies team has all that it takes to be a good one but needs a charismatic leader like a Clive Lloyd to bring them together. He is suggesting Lloyd be given a consultancy position with the team to begin that process.

Dev made the comment as he was doing commentary on the ICC World Cup semi-final between Indian and New Zealand at Old Trafford, Manchester, yesterday, a match the Kiwis won in stunning fashion by 18 runs to advance to their second straight final.

After winning their opening World Cup game against Pakistan by seven wickets at Trent Bridge on May 31, skipper Jason Holder's West Indies went winless in their next seven matches before winning their last game against Afghanistan to finish ninth among 10 teams in the tournament.

The less than flattering performance of the team has led to an avalanche of criticism from various stakeholders, who have pinpointed the continuing issues of player selection, preparation and the fragmented Cricket West Indies management going into the tournament as of the issues which must be dealt with if future teams are to fulfil their potential.

We'll make Clive Lloyd the next WICB President.

That might translate to good leadership both on and off the field.

You must love Clive Lloyd's resilience. He has been rejected so many times but he just keeps coming back.

That's what leadership is made of!

Lloyd is and remains the template for all leadership across all formats across ALL cricketing nations and his fellow West Indians chose to disparage him.

He has had that position for 20+ years.

He has been a dismal failure.

Stevie Wonder could've captained the West Indies teams of the late 70's and 80's and they would've been just as successful.

Kapil Dev was one of my favourite players and one of the stories he told was, when he was 14 and was called up for training with several other aspiring players he was given 2 chapattis to go with some vegetable curry for lunch. He immediately complained to an official saying,"i am a fast bowler and that food wasn't enough",the official looked at him and said,"young man, there is no such thing as a fast bowler in India".

Just, maybe, we need a stacked team like the ones Lloyd led during the 70s-early 80s. Since then he has failed at ever position he has tried in cricket.

Moreover, "Ambassador" Lloyd has so mortgaged his credibility at the altar of expediency that he even allowed himself to be unceremoniously kicked to the curb by the Big Idiot.

He is another one who should go gently into the good night instead of continuing to embarrass himself !

Doesn't matter, he is constantly quoted elsewhere!

He should just go, and take Gayle,Sammy & The Big Idiot with him!

Lloyd had lots of chances. He was the one who pushed Jason Holder as a leader few years ago. Look at how that turned out. Everyone complained during WC of his captaincy.
Having said that, Lloyd was a great captain. I don’t care how much talent you have in a team, you have to get maximum performance, and Lloyd did that from his players. Windies is a different animal, in terms of players from many different countries, Lloyd kept them together as a cohesive unit. Lloyd also pioneered the 4 prong, in addition his performance improved tremendously with the responsibility thrusted upon him.

How come Holder looked like a competent captain against England, then all at sea during the World Cup? What happened?
