New Zealand (Playing XI):
Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, James Neesham, Tom Latham(w), Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson

England (Playing XI):

Narper 2019-07-14 09:25:54

Williamson | New Zealand captain:
We're having a bat. Tough decision. A bat-first surface, but the overhead conditions do make it confusing. We have a job first up with the bat. We're playing the same team. The semi was a tough scrap for both sides, but we're happy we got across the line in that game. Always backing Guptill with the bat. He'll go and play with the freedom. Our team has played with a lot of heart and fight and has gotten us across the line so many times. A number of parts that are different from the 2015 final, different personnel, but any experience is a positive to learn from. It's a different day and anything can happen. Winning will be incredibly special, but before that we need to play some good cricket.

B16JP587S 2019-07-14 09:29:03

Hoping for an England victory. Glad NZ is batting first.

Narper 2019-07-14 09:29:47

Eoin Morgan | England captain:
Not at all disappointed about losing the toss. It was a 50-50 call. Always difficult here at Lord's - the overheads will lean towards the bowlers. Whichever side plays better will lift the trophy. Big challenge against an in-form NZ side. Jonny is fully fit, and we're playing the same XI. The strongest part in Edgbaston was our bowling and we created our opportunities in the first 10. If we can put our ball in the areas early on today, we are in with a great chance. I'm extremely proud of the team. Everyone has put in the hardwork over the last four years to create this opportunity today. Regardless of what happens, we have created a different level of expectation in 50-over cricket from English cricket now. We have embraced pressure throughout the tournament, and the semi-final epitomized that.

England vs NZ in ICC events since April 2015
- WT20 2016: Eng won by seven wkts
- CT 2017: Eng won by 87 runs
- WC 2019: Eng won by 119 runs

Narper 2019-07-14 09:44:36

The umpires walk into the field. The two teams walk in too, to join the lucky kids on either side of the World Cup trophy. Time for the national anthems: New Zealand go first - "God Defend New Zealand" by Thomas Bracken of Dunedin; followed by the gracious hosts, England - "God Save the Queen" by Brian May, Thomas Arne, Benjamin Britten
.

Narper 2019-07-14 09:46:57

Guptill and Henry Nicholls are at the crease.

Guptill is on strike.

Woakes will open the attack

NineMiles 2019-07-14 09:49:18

That's a green top they've prepared! shock

250/275 will be a good score.

Woakes to Guptill, FOUR, much better from Guptill, back of a length and well wide of off, he didn't get on top of the bounce as he played a back-foot punch, was in the air for a long time, but the ball squirted well wide of Stokes at backward poin

Narper 2019-07-14 09:51:50

In reply to NineMiles

Why did Williamson bat first?

Narper 2019-07-14 09:55:29

1.5
Jofra Archer to Guptill, no run, England are already celebrating, but Erasmus doesn't give Guptill out, neither does the batsman walk and England strangely do not review. A correct decision as well, top top call from Erasmus, a beauty first-up from Archer, shortened his length and got the ball to lift across the right-hander, had Guptill pushing from the crease, past the outside edge and clipped the back-thigh on its way to the keeper. Buttler was confident, so was Archer who was already celebrating, but Guptill went nowhere

NZ are not comfortable chasing and to insert the opposition could be construed as a sign of surrender! big grin

Clearly a bouncier wicket than we've seen throughout the tournament.

Was thinking the same thing. Early days yet though. I'm also surprised that Nicholls is playing. He's been a walking wicket thus far. Today could be his day after this successful review.

Given LBW

6.2
Woakes to Guptill, out Lbw!! This looked very close and Dharmasena lifts his finger for an LBW appeal. Will Guptill review, he has a long chat and asks for a review at the very last instant. It's a fair delivery and Guptill has been struck on the back-pad. No bat involved and UltraEdge confirms it. Ball tracking in and it confirms Guptill's worst nightmare - it's crashing into the top of middle, three REDS and Guptill is OUT. To be fair, this was a shocking review - has not just cost Guptill his wicket, but it has robbed NZ of their only review. Pitched up and nipping back in off the seam, Guptill was caught in the crease as he looked to work it to the on-side, in panic, he looked to get his bat around the pad, fell over in doing so and was a lame duck - bang in front of middle. The height wasn't an issue and Guptill's poor WC with the bat comes to an end

That is irrelevant. I am only hoping the young West Indian born fellow go on to be as good as the greatest ever.

Good for McGrath if he copied one of the great West Indian fast bowlers.

I’m thinking that they should bring on fall Down woods.

Williamson will wait them out and the gamble to get him early isn’t likely to happen by bowling the same pair

Plunkett to Henry Nicholls, FOUR, lovely shot, poor ball from Plunkett, came from wide of the crease and angled one onto Nicholls's pads, whipped away backward of square on the on-side, couple of bounces and over the ropes

Williamson sees set to try and just put a score on the board.
This England batting is much stronger than India. I think they seriously need to up the tempo here.

Umpire Dharmasena continues his nicking troubles with England, where he heard one that wasn't in Birmingham and now can't hear one that is in London. Well I think the poor decisions are highlighted more now because of the review mechanisms.

There have always been bad decisions which is why we have neutral umps and DRS.

de Grandhomme to Bairstow, no run, oh come on CdG! Captain trusts you in a big World Cup final and brings you one change, and you drop an relatively easy return catch. Got to be a lot more switched on! Nothing full delivery, Bairstow was yet again early into the drive, went straight at the bowler, who wasn't ready in his followthrough. Didn't get the hands in time and he grabbed at it. Walks back disappointed. The New Zealand coaching staff take notes

de Grandhomme to Root, no run, oh dear! An ugly swipe from Root. How often have we seen Root do that in any form of cricket? That's the pressure of a World Cup final.

16.3
de Grandhomme to Root, out Caught by Latham!! And now Root throws it away. He had to hang around. This isn't a big target and New Zealand are keeping the pressure on with tight bowling. You expect Root to absorb such situations, but here is trying to take toll of a dibbly-dobbly bowler. But de Grandhomme is good enough to move the ball in the air, he bowls the outswinger and bowls wide outside off stump to tempt Root. Big drive attempted and he nicks off. New Zealand are absolutely elated!

Root c Latham b de Grandhomme 7(30)

de Grandhomme to Morgan, 2 runs, just over Williamson.Morgan does not want de Grandhomme to keep bowling in one area. He gives the charge and is made to reach for the loft, toe-ends it and gets it over mid-off. Williamson backtracks and the ball lands just in front of him

Narper 2019-07-14 15:32:27

19.3
Ferguson to Bairstow, out Bowled!! Dragged on! You can only ride your luck so much. Bairstow has driven and got the inside edge quite a few times in this World Cup but none have gone on to hit timber. But it is the final and it has to happen in a final. Back of a length just outside off, Bairstow is off the ground to play the punch but the ball does not arrive at the pace he expected and he was through the shot a tad early, the inside edge kisses the leg bail and the pace of Ferguson is enough to remove the bails from their groove. The set batsman departs and New Zealand keep the game in balance

Neesham to Morgan, out Caught by Ferguson!! Neesham strikes with his first ball. It is a huge one. The England captain has to walk back. Short and outside off, Morgan was kept on a leash till then and suddenly saw something he can put away, cuts and does not bother to keep it down the ground. Ferguson was a bit late to react but he does well to get there with a dive forward, takes it an inch from the ground. Neesham and the rest of the Kiwis thought he had not taken it, but Ferguson got up and gestured it was out.

New Zealand review! It is for an LBW against Buttler. Williamson had a quick chat with Henry and Latham and decided to go upstairs. Legal delivery. It looks close but might be sliding down leg. No spike on the UltraEdge. Ball-tracking shows it to be missing leg-stump. Not Out!

Boult to Stokes, 6 runs, if I told you, you wouldn't believe it! A full-toss that is clubbed away to deep mid-wicket, they're going for the second, and Stokes, in his dive into the striker's end, deflects it with his bat towards the long-stop boundary for four overthrows! Six runs - adding the two they have run, and the four runs worth of rotten luck for New Zealand!s

Boult to Stokes, out Mark Wood Run Out! 1 run completed. It's a super over! A run-out. He is definitely run-out, is Mark Wood. A full-toss that's knocked with soft hands in front of long-on, Neesham collects, throws it to the non-striker's end, a nice flat throw and he's caught Wood well short as Boult whips off the bails. Absolutely stunning scenes.

Mark Wood run out (Neesham/Boult) 0(0)

So. I want details.

Narper 2019-07-14 18:38:14

Ecstasy for England, agony for New Zealand - both in equal measure keeping the cauldron that is Lord's - and England have won the World Cup, completing a hat-trick of host nations winning the World's most coveted trophy on their home turf! A nail-biter? I'd have chewed my fingers off if I didn't need them to type. Stokes is in tears, as is Archer - on his knees. His selection was in question before the tournament, and he has delivered in never-before-visited territory in cricket. England have won the World Cup on boundary count - after a tied match, and a tied super over! The English are jumping around in glee, with emotions they thought they had left behind in their youth, whereas Martin Guptill, still carrying the scars of the previous World Cup final, is absolutely inconsolable - he's on his knees, refusing to leave the pitch, and looks light-headed, as though about to faint.

Narper 2019-07-14 18:44:47

There's humdingers, cliffhangers, nail-biters, and then there's this. Absolutely incredible scenes at the Mecca of cricket - Lord's, accustomed to the grit and graft of top-quality Test cricket, isn't used to the breakneck speed and madness of this format. My heart goes out to New Zealand - to lose a World Cup final because of the boundary count - Williamson is ashen-faced in the pavilion, but he is out on the field as well.

sgtdjones 2019-07-14 18:45:49

Boult 6 on the boundary

Over throw fer 6

NZ this is where it was lost.

djdrastic 2019-07-14 18:54:12

Well done to Eng.

That overthrow turned the game for NZ.Really unlucky.
And to think many on this board wanted Archer to play for the WasteIndies when he could win a WC for his adopted team.
What a player.
