QC’s Persaud & Jaikaran share in record double century opening stand

After a no-result in their opening game and a victory in their next match in the 33rd annual Sir Garfield Sobers 40-overs International Schools Cricket tournament, Queen’s College of Guyana remained unbeaten after 3 matches when they destroyed Trinidad’s St Mary’s College by 10 wickets on Thursday in Barbados.

The right handed Mavindra Persaud reached the boundary 12 times from 106 balls for an unbeaten 105, while the left-handed Brandon Jaikaran finished one short of his hundred from 117 balls, decorated with 8 fours. Queen’s College galloped to 227 without loss with 3.2 overs to spare, replying to a challenging 226-4 in their allotted 40 overs at Gall Hill.

Batting first, the Trinis were spearheaded by solid batting from Jahrel Nedd who made 60, Nicholas Ramlal who scored an unbeaten 50, Andre Seetaram who contributed 48 and Gerard Chin with 30, as Navindra Persaud picked up 2-33 for Queen’s College.

Persaud and Jaikaran then flayed the hapless bowlers to all parts of the small ground with the first unbeaten double century partnership in the 2019 tournament. It was also the first ever by a Guyanese school since Covent Garden, captained by Zaheer Safie, became the first school from Guyana to participate in this tournament in 1998.

At Windward: 360 Cricket Academy beat The Business School Guyana by 7 wickets as the other Guyanese school in the tournament slipped to their third defeat in as many matches.
The Business School were bowled out for 141 in 37.2 overs despite Akeem Critchlow’s 55 and 41 from Tathesh Shivrattan. Hugh Sheriff had 3-18, Jed Collins took 2-17, Tyler Small captured 2-17 and Anay Baruah got 2-22 for 360 Cricket Academy who reached 142-3 in 29.1 overs.
360 Cricket Academy were spearheaded to victory by Lachlan Shaw (41), Ben Jones (37 not out), Hugh Sheriff (18 not out) and Lachlan Ball (18 ) as Tathesh Shivrattan took 2-30. (Sean Devers)
