70 cops escape death
Griffith says officers' lives on the line

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith continued his call for more public support for the police yesterday, as he delivered his address for the Prime Minister's Independence Day toast to the nation at the Police Administration Building, Sackville Street, Port of Spain yesterday.

Griffith said over the past year, there were over 40 incidents where police officers were shot at and called for greater understanding and compassion for the police as they protect and serve.

"Over 70 police officers could have been killed in the line of duty, had it not been for the grace of God and their training. Thankfully not one was killed over the past year and it says a lot, but it wouldn't make headline news. I ask all let's start adding some care, compassion and support to the men and women who put their lives on the line on a daily basis for this country."

Griffith also announced that there was a five to 10 per cent decrease in every major crime, including murder, for the year thus far when compared to the same period last year.

The murder rate is above last years total??????

What's the objective here? Is this SgtDjones fellow a budding politician with an agenda? .. Were these posts ubiquitous pre 2015?

.. or maybe he's a Roman Gladiator needing his fix
shock wink

Trinidad and Tobago’s appetite for gore, bacchanal, scandal and death has left Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi wondering if this country has turned into a Roman Colosseum.

“The Roman Colosseum was the venue that opiated the Roman masses. How? By sacrificing Christians and gladiators to the sword and to the lions,” Al-Rawi explained.

“We seem to relish as a country in gore, bacchanal, scandal and death. Read our newspapers. They don't look like the US newspapers. There have been close to 130 mass murders in the US....a mass murder is where more than four people are killed in one shot...not a reflection of that in their newspapers. Jamaica, which is living under a state of emergency in certain parishes, not a reflection in their papers. Guyana, not a reflection in their papers. Trinidad and Tobago, from page one to the sports page all you could see is gore and gut,”

Nahhhhhhhhhhhh..let me update ya ..ok

“SEVEN MURDERS in 24 hours,” “16 murders in four days” – our headline news for the month of July; the oversaturation of our minds as we face the daily, recurring, gnawing trauma of everyday life in Trinidad.

Growing up in a small island where we are all interconnected and live closely with each other, one would think we would be easy to govern. A country with oil, natural gas, asphalt, ammonia and a supposedly vibrant energy-based economy. How can we possibly go wrong?

A failing nation

notinsular 2019-09-23 22:33:03

so we are only failing now ?
But we were successful when:

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.

Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year (2013), there were 407.

But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to “the big fish” — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it.

I previously noted I will not vote or support either party in T&T based on corruption. So I fail to see any validity
in your above comments.

If one were to look why the young males are killing each other, they received nothing from the various Oil Booms.
They saw no trickle down effect from various Governments.
Their neighbors were moving up in society as they have been left behind in places as Laventille , La Brea , La Romaine et al. Even the father of the Country noted he can put a Toad in the election in such areas and they would vote for it.

For over half a century they were neglected of the basics
water, electricity , hospitals , homes et al.

Today , to level the playing field since the money all gone they have become Robin Hoods that deal in murder and drugs. Survival often leads to drastic measures, soon T&T
will be missing a large portion of its youths, they will be cremated or in various cemeteries.

So you see you dont know what my family has accomplished
since the early 1800's in South T&T. We pay taxes as
all good citizens should do to build T&T.

I have always been a vocal critic regardless who is in power.

“To criticize one's country is to do it a service... Criticism, in short, is more than a right; it is an act of patriotism--a higher form of patriotism, I believe, than the familiar rituals and national adulation.”
J. William Fulbright (Senator)
