HEADLINE: POLLARD IS WINDIES CAPTAIN

CaribbeanCricket.com 2019-09-08 16:30:13

T&T's Kieron Pollard has been named West Indies 'white ball' captain and will replace Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite respectively.

A source close to the situation who spoke to Guardian Media Sports on the condition anonymity explained that the decision was taken by Cricket West Indies (CWI) Board of Directors. Guardian Sports understands that the CWI directors made the decision on Saturday, the first day of their two-day regular quarterly meeting at the Hilton Trinidad Hotel in Port-of-Spain.

Pollard, 32, who is captaining the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the absence of regular captain Darren Bravo, who is injured and will be out of action for two months, was the player proposed by the selection committee and when the vote was taken, he got the support from six directors while the other six abstained.

A Trini newspaper “reporting” this news?

Will believe it if it comes from CWI itself. Vinode Mamchand has previously given out wrong info of a similar nature

The thing is, he wasn't picked for the recent ODIs. How come he make captain now?

mikesiva 2019-09-08 18:42:05

"Pollard, 32, who is captaining the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the absence of regular captain Darren Bravo"

Dwayne Bravo surely....

He deserved to be in place of either Russell who was injured or one in a blue moon Carlos

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm big grin big grin big grin big grin big grin

But if this true....good move

Holder is a failure as ODI cappo

Braffit can't make the T20 team

Well, that doesn't quite answer my question. I , actually, was advocating for his ODI inclusion in spite of his sketchy one day record, and I feel he will be a better captain than Jason and Carlos but of course time will tell.

I just don't understand how people don't play the format and then suddenly become captain. But is West Indies. It's traditional. smile

pariaman 2019-09-08 19:04:29

We are in dire straits in ODI

Do we leave Carlos there and let things go worse?

Give him a chance we already at rock bottom

pariaman 2019-09-08 19:05:44

Was carlos a fixture on the team when chosen as T20?

Was Jason an experienced Captain when chosen?

A drastic change is needed to see if we can change the fortunes of Windies team; neither men nor women can win ah lick.

I can't recall a more barren period for Windies cricket. At least when we started our decline, after '95, every once in a while we would win a match to show we were still keen competitors. Now, we can't win anything. Rather than turning the corner, these teams are "back backing" and unable to get out of the curve. In fact, even the once minions are throwing curveballs at the once-mighty Windies.

Skerritt and Shallow are politicians. You should know how they "get their wheels greased."

Will Pollard be clapping like Sammy? lol lol

Walco 2019-09-08 19:38:16

Serious question. How does Cricket West Indies voting work? If there are 12 total votes and six directors vote in favor of a motion while the other six abstain, does the motion at issue carry or would a majority of the 12 eligible votes be necessary for a motion to carry? In other words, can a captaincy recommendation by the selectors be approved by a 6-0 vote or would at least 7 votes be necessary for the motion to carry?

sgtdjones 2019-09-08 19:42:42

In reply to Walco

CWI gats 12 votes from shareholders

Then, they have one from the President.

Majority carries , except Guyana.

lol lol

Why be a critic at this time, we dont know if its factual.

When CWI announces, why not give the player a chance to see if he has such leadership capabilities.
Holder was.

Now if he fails, one can be critical.

Until then, it sounds like sour grapes.

cricketmad 2019-09-08 20:11:55

Yet another appointment of a specialist captain .

If el Presidente doesn't the CEO will have one vote.

Thus breaking any tie.

In a normal business operation the Chair and the CEO has one vote each.

Got it.
He previously misinformed the public, about Pollard's selection.
If this is wrong, it would be the second time, in less than six months.

I will think that will be pretty embarrassing for a reputable paper to print misleading info on the same player twice. However, it wouldn't surprise me because standards seems to be pretty low right now

rillo 2019-09-09 01:45:43

In reply to B16JP587S

He did not play because they did not pick him to play.

It is not his fault that the CWI is shortsighted. That they cannot see other islands except Barbados abd Jamaica when picking a team.
Polly will make a great captain in maroon colors.
He makes people play above their pay grade. Ask Krunal and Hardik. Hardik attributed as much in an interview awhile back that Pollard helped him immensely when they batted together.
Would love to see they also name Shimron as his sidekick.

rillo 2019-09-09 01:47:30

In reply to InHindsight

Yes he can. Give him the right combination of players who want to "win" and he will.
Cannot see Jason neither Carlos on the team.
So many other players look hungrier than these two.

i don't agree with it either but these are not normal circumstances the west indies can't keep doing the same thing and expecting different results ,the results under holder is not good so if this news is true good luck to pollard and hope his btting has improved

Pacy 2019-09-09 11:00:53

I am surprised that some who called for sacking of senior players with the theme "Anyway we not winning" suddenly want to know Pollards credentials as a captain.

Afterall we are losing and what is the big deal. Anyone who has seen our White ball cricket record under the current captains will know that "We cannot do any worse" lol lol lol

It doesn't matter whether it's Pollard, Holder, Brathwaite, Bravo or whoever, it won't make a difference. Did you hear? Another team is now on the scene to beat up on the West Indies - Afghanistan. Yes they have just beaten Bangladesh - a team we can't beat. Yes, our woes are multiplying. Maybe we should just give it up. Our boys just don't have what it takes - skill/talent, brains, pride and patriotism. Without these we will never be able to compete internationally against teams who are overflowing with these qualities. Yes, it's over for us!

Kay 2019-09-09 15:56:29

This doosra guy not even willing to give Polly a chance

Holder came in with absolutely no captaincy experience at any level in any form of the game

His stats as captain is by a factor more than 2 worse than any other captain

we need change

Lets give Polly a chance

I think he was the best choice among the contenders

Rally around the WI

JamMack 2019-09-09 16:47:43

This is so comical. According to the selectors he wasn't good enough to make the team, but he's good enough to captain it. big grin big grin big grin

At least the ODI and T20 teams will have a captain with some FIRE. Who bats at 6 skipper?

Its amazing how when players start losing dere overseas appeal dey suddenly can find all de time in de world to commit to WI cricket.

Nothing like losing a Big Bash contract, getting dropped from an IPL team, or almost going unsold in an IPL draft to mek men reassess de way forward.
