I Miles Bascombe whose role as a selector will see him assist in picking the junior panels alongside the senior team as outlined previously, echoed Harper’s sentiments.

“I have been selecting West Indies teams for years now as a fan, but of course only now doing it officially. The teams I will contribute to selecting now, will be the ones that will go out on the actual field of play. It’s a role I take very seriously” said Bascombe.

Like Roger (Harper) I believe we have a great opportunity to return confidence to the selection process, if we are able to demonstrate the teams we select are based performance then we would have accomplished what we would have been called to do.”

That highlighted part I found interesting.

It seems this selection process has the making of politics rather than cricket. Was he Skerritt a politician?

Do Skerritt and Shallow know what the hell they are doing or they are just throwing things out there against the wall to see what sticks?

Can't be worse than what Cameron and co did...........I know that Harper bascombe and Simmons not going to pick someone like Rajendra Chandrika

But they picked someone like Kesrick Williams who knows nothing about bowling. The best he knows what to do is to pretend writing on his notepad when he got lucky taking a wicket.

That is not a fair assessment of Rajendra Chandrika. He was a good batsman, regionally. It so happens he came up against a strong Aus and India's team and couldn't negotiate their pace attack.

33 year old wwi batter

fc avg 21 big grin

he could still be a good selector

Well his first class stats are 60 matches, one hundred and a batting average of just over 25. lol lol lol lol rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes
He was a political choice because a segment of the Guyanese population was crying racism after chanderpaul was dropped after the second test vs England the series before. Chandrika was talentless

doosra 2019-10-16 23:06:26

In reply to Jumpstart

Chandrika was not talentless

in fact, if you looked at him bat in real time you would ask why his fc avg is that low

dont change the history

he was an HPC guy and that regime is what promoted him to intl cricket...had nothing to do with appeasement

Well after 60 matches.......your first class average could only equal 25? That says something totally different. It had everything to do with appeasement. There were openers with better four day averages than him. De brudd make a pair on debut and looked totally out of depth

not necessarily

many unfulfilled talent around

Unfulfilled talent yuh say? lol lol lol lol . As I said, I don't expect Harper or Simmons or bascombe to do something like that. Then again, those selectors were acting oon the orders of Field Marshall Cameron

I remember watching Guyana play TT in a super 50 final in 2015 I think. I was in the oval that day. Trevon Griffith and Chandrika open and dey only had to make 200. Griffith swing and swing without much direction but ended up on 30 out of the 35 runs scored. Chandrika was on 3 and was dropped by Pollard off Ravi(who was pissed because it was an easy wicket)in that 3 of 15 balls or something. I don't believe he went on to make much because GT got bowled out for 60 sumthin. Anyways.......later that year........yuh boy makes his debut for the WI and looks totally out of place. He was driving a full inswinging delivery from rampaul and it went to slips and pollard grassed it.

Is the job of selector a difficult one? I think not because of the following:

1) Easy digital access to stats and videos.

2) Easy evaluation of a player's mental game strength, class, and technical proficiency by observing multiple games on site or with video.

Assuming that one has been exposed to the game on the playing field or even as a keen observer, the only thing needed is the ability to read, observe and analyze. Most of us are capable of doing this.

The selectors' job is the most over rated one in cricket.

QED.

sunfish 2019-10-17 00:07:25

Just to underscore the above, the very first time I saw King bat some short years ago I was struck by his clean stroke play and knew he'd go far. And I've never played the game at the first class level just observed/listened to it from my armchair starting 1963.

dayne 2019-10-17 00:40:48

Just because a batsman looks good does not mean he is a talented player, it has something to do with his mental make-up and judgement, Chandrika is not a F/C batsman he played in the last F/C season and he failed also, no one noticed because his low scores were so low. However, the new Selectors have the opportunity to make smart selections after seeing all the bad decisions the last group of Selectors made
