Legendary West Indies batsman Sir Viv Richards believes newly appointed skipper Kieron Pollard was kept out of leadership roles because of politics.

The 32-year-old Pollard was recently appointed both captain of the One Day International and T20 squads, replacing Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite respectively.  While heartily agreeing with the move, Richards believes it was a long time in coming.

“I’ve always felt he should have been [appointed] a bit earlier,” Richards said in an interview with the Line And Length cricket podcast.

who better than him to know?

jacksparrow 2019-10-29 01:13:38

He probably right

With Pollards record he's lucky to be even picked in a WI side.

Yes and who should be picked based on their record?
WI almost last in each category but let us know which losers you think deserve it.

So we okay about players not making the side on merit now?

So who's your choice for captain?

before asking that question
a better question would be, would the current problems of the team be fixed with another captain?

so in your view, a captain is whats needed to turn the fortunes of west indies cricket right? even one that doesnt have merit to be on the team, correct?

I like the direction West Indies cricket is going. They are stopping the victimizing of players and are trying to use all of the cricket stadiums.

It may not solve it but we needed a change since the past Captains had brought us from No 1 to number 9

Pollard, DJ Bravo are the only 2 legitimate contenders

DJ is out injured so Pollard by Default

Pollard had an excellent CPL as a batsman so he could have made the T20 team

ODI team not so much

lets see if he can produce results!

As with all professional sports if he does not I will be first to say change him

I can accept pollard for t20
but ODI is a completely different beast, all that power and influence will dissipate the minute his normal odi numbers continue, how can you demand from the players when ur underlings have more hundreds that you in less matches

By your logic Lloyd could not captain Richards?

Richards was by far the better batsman!

What we want is an excellent captain who can at the very least make the side

Pollard could make the odi side even if barely

Holder was best bat and bowler but still could not cause the side to win

Sammy could barely make the side but he could win at least in T 20

Give Pollard a chance we are at the bottom right now and change is needed

True.

Interesting that a player's record never factored in for you when Darren Sammy was captain though cool
