Narper 2019-11-09 08:24:30

Afghanistan have had a torrid time in ODIs in 2019 racking up 14 losses in the 18 games they've played so far.

Their four wins this year came before the World Cup and they've now lost ten consecutive matches with the latest against West Indies in the first ODI.

They now find themselves desperate to turn things around - not only to keep the series alive but also find a way out of the rut.

Norm 2019-11-09 08:26:27

Afghanistan wins the toss and will field.

WI to play the same team. Afghanistan makes a single change.

Narper 2019-11-09 08:29:17

Rashid Khan:
We will bowl first. It looks to be a fresh wicket. It was tough in the last games because of dew. It is better for us to bowl first because of the number of spinners we have. We will try to restrict them below and chase it down
.

Narper 2019-11-09 08:29:43

Kieron Pollard:
Pitch looks a bit dry. It is a good toss to win for them. We ticked most of the boxes in the first game. We have identified few things which we can do better. We can't control what has gone but we can control what is in front of us. We have the same team today

Naveen-ul-Haq to Shai Hope, FOUR, that delivery had "Hit-me" written on it, too full and too wide. Shai Hope reaches for it and flayys into it through cover for another four. Shai Hope has taken a liking to Naveen-ul-Haq!

It's time for drinks. Solid, if not a sensational, start from West Indies. Afghanistan wouldn't be too disappointed either. A couple of quick wickets will put the pressure back on the visitors. Varun steps in to take you through for the next hour and a bit.

Mujeeb to Roston Chase, out Bowled!! Knocked him over. Chase, who was the player of the match in the last game departs early today. Was struggling and the pressure of dot balls added to his misery. This was the quicker delivery from Rahman, Chase misjudged the length and went back to work it across the line. Couldn't counter the extra zip and it breaches his defence to clip the leg-stump. Rahman punches the air in delight as he picks up his first wicket.

Yes, I understand he had to go after the bowling, but trying to clear the ropes over LongOn off the backfoot is physically impossible for someone of his stature! Apart from being a bad shot selection, it’s also a technical flaw.
Hope the coaches recognize that!

Norm 2019-11-09 11:14:50

Walsh has batting ability. Grew up as a batting allrounder. Definitely shouldn't be batting behind Joseph.

sgtdjones 2019-11-09 11:53:16

Excellent lower order rally from Nicholas Pooran has allowed West Indies to get a respectable total after the middle order was choked by some Afghan spin. They began slowly in a batting template from the 1990s, looking to set themselves up.

The risk with that strategy is, of course, the possibility of spinners coming into their own especially on surfaces like these that wear as the game progresses. This put the middle order under pressure, and the lookout for release shots left them in some strife.

Thankfully for them, Pooran found his way out of the mess with a sensible approach, before he opened up with some big hits to drive the total forward. Make no mistake, Afghanistan will have to bat very well to level the series

Cottrell to Javed Ahmadi, out Caught&Bowled!! Cottrell strikes early with the new ball! And as expected, he takes out the trademark salute! After bowling around full length, Cottrell decided to change things up and bowled it on a short of length. Javed Ahmadi was taken aback by the length, he was in no position to pull but still went through with the pull shot. It clipped the top-edge and popped up in the air. Cottrell moved forward and took it with utmost ease. Afghanistan in early trouble!

Cottrell to Hazratullah Zazai, 1 run, Joseph has dropped an absolute dolly! This is ordinary from the fast bowler. Cottrell was getting ready to salute but he had to control himself! It was bowled short and Hazratullah Zazai top-edged the pull, it went in the air and landed in the hand of Joseph at square leg who didn't have to move an inch to grab it but still ended up dropping it. He took it too casually probably!

Time for the third umpire to come into the act. It was pushed wide of cover and Rahmat charged for a single. Kieron Pollard collects it cleanly and throws it to Alzarri Joseph who collected it awkardly - He was in the air when he dislodged the bails. Rahmat was a long way down the track and he couldn't come back in time. It was a horrible call from Hazratullah Zazai, he shouted yes hence Rahmat ran for the single

Roston Chase to Hazratullah Zazai, out Caught by Cottrell!! He wanted to repeat the previous shot but couldn't connect it well enough this time and ended up gifting a catch to long-on. Credit to Roston Chase who bowled it full again after being belted for a maximum. It was very full and an opportunity was there for Zazai to clear the ropes again. He threw his bat at it, it clipped the bottom half of the bat hence it couldn't achieve the requisite distance. Hazratullah Zazai would be a disappointed man as he was responsible for the run-out of Rahmat Shah and soon ended up getting dismissed too

Roston Chase to Asghar Afghan, out Caught by Lewis!! Chase induces the false shot and Afghan succumbs. Guess, Ikram Ali's aggressive display in the last over might have played a role in Afghan playing this shot as he looked to break free. Danced out and wanted to smoke it over mid-wicket. The excess of turn that Chase got messed up his timing as he swiped it without much control into the bucket hands of Lewis at deep square leg, who bends low and clasps onto it.

Rashid Khan:
I think we started off really well, we bowled well in the first few overs. Credit goes to Pooran for the way he played. 247 was still chaseable with such a deep batting line up. We recovered well, but couldn't finish off. The only plan was to bowl dot balls and they'll make mistakes. We knew we could get few opportunities. The senior players did well, but we lost wickets in clusters. In the next match we'll try to play much better than this and be positive. I think we need to focus on that. We need to believe in ourselves, that's where we're lacking a touch.

Kieron Pollard:
It feels good, been a long since we have won a series. It was a good wicket, it was a bit drier. It was just a matter of giving that opprtunity to go hard in the end. Pooran batted well and showed his consistency. The openers laid the foundation for us and Hetmyer played according to the situation as well. I want to go back inside and celebrate with the guys. Winning is a habit and we need to enjoy ourselves similarly day after..

Pooran, MoM: Definitely feel good well with the series win. I know it was a critical situation and I had to build a partnership with someone. Was trying to get a start and go through my basics. Once I was there I just had to execute my skills.

This is West Indies' first series win since August 2014. That was 21 series ago. Nothing else really needs to be said to explain the significance of this result. At the other end, Afghanistan are developing something of an unwanted streak themselves. It is now 11 ODI losses in a row. For considerable chunks of this match, they could have claimed they were ahead. But once again, when it came to the batting, the skills and temperament weren't sustained.
