Why WI were right to drop Hetmyer

spider 2020-01-13 14:23:22

Though the West Indies easily won the final ODI of the series in Grenada – by five wickets with 64 deliveries to spare – they had to do it without the services of Shimron Hetmyer, one of the most talented young players in the game. Why? The Guyanese lefthander was dropped after what the authorities seemed to have had enough of his less than responsible batting.

A number of Caribbean cricket fans have had enough too and had been wondering, for some time, how long he’d be allowed to skate by. There were some calls for his head after a far from convincing showing during last year’s World Cup.

Hetmyer needs to resist squandering his considerable gifts. A man of his capabilities has no business losing his place in the West Indies side -one struggling to regain its reputation and standing in World cricket. He is too good a player not to command a permanent place. His future is in his hands.

I wish if someone had stood up for Barath like that,he was kicked out un-ceremoniously,a cricketer with his talents should have been given the same freedom that Hetmyer has had so far.

Hell!.....He could have been watching Pooran a long time ago. Don't forget that Hetty opened the batting in that U19 game against Australia!!!

I don't think anyone ever argued publicly against Hety being dropped now, or before.

A well managed program of disciplinary action against all the players, for poor performance, should help them all. It should also help to improve the bench and indicate to the selectors if permanent changes are needed.

Bull, bull, bulllshhhhhhhhh.....

The kid wants so much to be a big man, to show that he is one a Big One, probably out of insecurity and immaturity.

So what you do? Strip and flog him publicly, shame him in front of his peeps he is trying so hard to win their grace?

Your teenagers........do you flog them publicly when they mess up, or just try to treat them like, encourage them to be, mature adults at the same time you understand that they are new at this adult thingy and would falter here and there.

Public flogging/shaming is not the way, West Indian or any other civilization.

This is where good parent or Management can show their mettle. Unlike past habit of just being punitive, chopping and changing.
Think if you had one child who would be taking over the family business, heritage.......

Lots of big, big, important men with fat, fat paychecks should have some people management skills rather than just reading CCC for a living? razz

In reply to spider Learn from Pant?
Pant's record to date in ODIs
Matches: 16 Aggregate: 374 HS 71 Average 26.71 100s: 0
Hetmyer after 16 ODIs
Aggregate: 729 HS: 127 Ave: 45.56 Centuries: 3
Even now for all his inconsistency Hetmyer's average is 36.7 and he has added 2 more centuries. Hetty has a lot of learning to do, but not from Pant

Pant is a "Lant" razz (useless, unable to learn).

They talk about Hety like he is such a colossal failure! Looks like just couple of games ago he blasted a 100 and one or two 50s against top competition and showing good discipline at the plate.
Many greats like world record holders would go through longer patches of failures but make up with one big innings or something.

Attitude? Talk to him like a big brother/father figure or a neutral therapist to give assurance, support, feelings of security which will bring out the best in him as he won't necessarily need to try to be super man by fancy shots and then pop out.

Otherwise, he would run away from home after a public flogging and become his "own man" for real, a "mercenary" for real!!

Why not bring back the cat"o nine tails?razz
The hallmark of Colonialism which even Britain abolished.
However the WICB behaved like they were worse slave maters than even the Colonial Lords and Masters. So......
Despite rumors to the contrary, or brainwashing, it does not work!!
Punishment is not a motivator!

Google/wiki is my friend....

Judicial corporal punishment was removed from the statute book in Great Britain in 1948.

Judicial corporal punishment has been abolished or declared unconstitutional since 1997 in Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, South Africa, Zambia, Uganda (in 2001) and Fiji (in 2002).

However, some former colonies in the Caribbean have reinstated flogging with the cat. Antigua and Barbuda reinstated it in 1990, followed by the Bahamas in 1991 (where, however, it was subsequently banned by law)[12] and Barbados in 1993 (only to be formally declared inhumane and thus unconstitutional by the Barbados Supreme Court).

Trinidad and Tobago never banned the "cat". Under the Corporal Punishment (Offenders over Sixteen) Act 1953, use of the "cat" was limited to male offenders over the age of 16. The age limit was raised in 2000 to 18.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has been accused of torture and "cruel, inhuman and degrading" treatment of prisoners,........

Again, I have no horse in the field. smile

I did not like Hety's attitude and style until last series.

Just that Hety demonstrated that he has learnt a little and has the capacity to learn, unlike so many.

yea but for all of us really, maybe this will help him to be better, bring out the best that he can be. I really see the next captain and great in him, but sometimes expectations burden.

Yeah, looking around I would say your way not working either, as the world going to shyt!
And goofier is a drop for non performance. Not a flogging.

My way? You mean WICB way has done nothing to develop players. Some lucky to get exposure to IPL and have flourished there.
I say anyway but punishment unless there is no hope for rehabilitation, like murderers
What has been clearly demonstrated by past management of WI cricket is incompetence, impotence at handling personnel.
Hopefully with new management .,.,,,.
One can only hope

Again, Hety was showing signs of learning. Any Coach/Mentor qualified to help him develop and mature more?
Or just drop licks (figuratively)?

goofballs 2020-01-15 19:10:46

So now if Hety makes some runs based purely on his talent, the Einsteins of this Board would declare a triumphant victory, that the punishment worked overnight with just one whipping. lol lol lol lol

Dockrell to Hetmyer, OUT, oh no. He nearly gave away his wicket attempting the same shot a couple of balls ago. Dockrell floats it up in that wide line again, inviting him to reach out and take on long-off. Goes for it again, doesn't catch it as well as he'd like, and this time Balbirnie is in position to move towards the ball and complete the low catch with a dive forward and to his right

SO Hetmyer c Balbirnie b Dockrell 28 (18b 0x4 3x6) SR: 155.55

Poor fella. Use "top side" sometimes.

A mentor who bats aggressively but can defend and knows the difference. Not Shiv!

Maybe Kalli?

lol lol

In saying that, agree he needed a message sent in the ODI format. Hetmyer is too good a player to be averaging 36. He's good enough to average 40+. Sometimes we all need a shake up in life. Let's hope this works for him.
