HEADLINE: 'Andre Russell now is our Chris Gayle, our Brian Lara' - Dwayne Bravo

Andre Russell is one of the most value players in T20 cricket, and now his West Indies team-mate Dwayne Bravo has likened the Jamaican to "our Chris Gayle our Brian Lara" in T20Is. Bravo's praise came in the wake of Russell's impactful return during the two-match T20I series in Sri Lanka, which was also the first series he played for West Indies since being ruled out of the 2019 World Cup due to an injury.
West Indies won the series 2-0 with Russell playing a big hand, scoring 35 off 14 balls in teh first T20I and 40 off 14 in the second. The latter was, in particular, a whirlwind knock as Russell packed six sixes to add to the four he hit in the first match, enough to fetch the Player-of-the-Series award.
"He's the best in the world," Bravo, who was part of the West Indies side, said in praise of Russell in a chat with Trinidad-based radio station I955 FM on Friday. "It's the same I used to say of Chris Gayle when Chris Gayle was in his prime - we are happy to have him representing us, we didn't have to come up and bowl against him in an international match. It's the same with Andre Russell. Andre Russell now is our Chris Gayle, is our Brian Lara, in the T20 format. He is the superstar."

please everyone knows Lara barely have a T20 career. stupid point
Lara in the end is more than stats, fifty years from now most people will remember Lara's influence on the game, will talk about his match winning innings and how stadiums were packed to see his flair and style and how he influenced the game. Not sure if anyone will remember Russell ten years from now.
In the end no one will remember this Bravo comment by next week

I for one think that Bravo should save that kind of talk for a Bajan or a Muddie if he can't find a Tit that is currently worthy. Addressing a Jamaican in as many words is truly unbecoming.

Then by that logic, Lara is a better T10 player than Sobers.
And Lara is also better than Messi.
NB: I was and am a Lara fanatic.
But Lara didnt do it in T20. From the rebel Kapil Dev league to other forays into T20. It just didnt work at that time in his career.
Its ok to think Lara a legend and acknowledge his T20 stats.
It really is

.
These are the Facts = Brian Lara = 121 matches, 232 innings...= T20 Cricket
so for anyone to compare him in T20 with any player who played a lot more innings than him is useless
this is why what Bravo says in recent years has not been resonating on the ground with anyone. talking too much shit.. talk done

Bravo have ah more successful T20 career than Lara, so soon he will call himself better than Lara
Lara retired in 2007 when T20 professional and internal cricket was still in its early stage. Bravo is actually doing Russell harm with this comparison

Bouy, gonna tell me unnu all just dumb so? Bravo is not saying Russell is more or less of a legend than Lara. He merely is making the point that the same way Lara was WI superstar when he was in full flow it's the same way Russell is now WI super star. It's not a comparison between T20 and test cricket. But who can argue that WI biggest star and biggest influencer on the T20 game right now is Russell. Cricinfo recently did an article which shows Russell to be the most impactful player in T20s. Same way Lara was the most impactful in tests in his prime and Gayle in T20s in his prime.

How could he live with himself after saying something complementary about a Jamaican, whatever the complement is?

I know you fancy this T20 thing but it is silly to compare accomplishments at mostly club level to a great like Lara going to battle against international teams.
HS of 47 in T20i vs 121 in club level T20 with 2 hundreds and 18 fifties.
So. Yea. It is an apples to oranges comparison.
Over to you.

A rising tide floats all boats.
If he makes us believe the IPL and CPL like the Ashes and Wisden he will be more relevant too.

The man said Russell is a superstar in T20
Just like Lara was a superstar in Test & ODI cricket
Is that a lie?
He didnt compare accomplishments. He didnt compare test cricket and T20
I agree its silly to compare the 2 formats. Bravo isnt the one doing that.

I think this back handed compliment from DJ Dummy will sting Lara a lot more than Samuels running him out in his last international inning.

He is the best in the world @ club level.
Lara was the best in the world @ international level.
So it all depends on how you define a lie. But it certainly is not an accurate representation of the facts.
imusic, a closer (but not entirely representative) comparison is Devon Smith @ regional level.
I agree its silly to compare the 2 formats.
I have no issue comparing across formats. What I think is a stretch is comparing international to club.

Club T20 cricket, particularly IPL is similar to Champions League Football. The best in the world against the best in the world. No restriction by country to play I. A team. Only if youre good enough or not.
WI domestic FC cricket where Devon Smith plays, is not in the same galaxy from a quality standpoint, as club T20 cricket.

Music man cmon. No it is not.
IPL has significant no-talent Indians being given a platform to get work. And the teams are diluted for it.

I admitted upfront it was an analogy that was also short of the mark. Which one is closer?
But forget all that opinionated debate.
Russell's Club level accomplishments in T20 are outstanding.
His International? Not-so-much.
It certainly isn't the same or even similar. It is a much higher level.
